when a candidate passes a certain amount of delegates, it is intuitively obvious to even the most casual observer that the candidate with 1144+ delegates will be the nominee.

Delegate count is predicted by voter turn out, assuming that the delegates will vote in the same way that the rest of the population did. It is an assumption based off of popular vote, which in ALMOST EVERY CASE is very accurate. There is always a margin of error, but it usually is +/-50 delegates Yes, we do not know the true delegate count. But to think that Ron Paul is still in the race is delusional.
