Idea for my first grow, tips needed! please help a newb!

I've been wanting to grow for quite a while now, and I've finally decided to give it a shot.
I've been doing research here and there over the past few months and I'm still trying to wrap
my head around everything, it's a lot to take in o_O! I still have much more reading to do, but I'm trying to get a general plan going on and revise it along the way before I start spending any $.

I'd like to go autoflower for my first grow and plan to purchase 6-8 autoflower fem seeds. One of the first things I'd like to know is approx how many small autoflower plants can be grown successfully under a 400w MH/HPS light? I plan to plant my girls directly into 2 gallon pots from germination. I was wondering if maybe I should use 1 gallon pots ( plants should get 12-16" max ) to fit more, or if that's not worth it? I'm thinking not... Also, one big question I have is drainage. Will I have to drain excess water from watering out of the tent? If so, what is an inexpensive and effective way of doing this?

Tent

48"48"78"
Ventilation = One 6 inch, 2x 3.5" round. Three 15" x 2.5" rectangular.

Lighting

400w MH Coversion Bulb to start. Switching to 400w HPS at first signs of flowering.

With 6" Cool Tube Reflector

20/4 light cycle 400w MH until flowering... 24 hour dark period to get pheromones or w/e going, switch to HPS and return to 20/4 light cycle until harvest??

Ventilation

GrowBright 6" Inline Fan & Carbon Filter Combo

Carbon Filter > Fan > Duct > Cool Tube > Duct > Exhaust
2 Oscillating Fans inside for air circulation
Passive Intake

One problem that I fear I may run into is being able to vent out of the tent, but being unable to vent out of the room itself. I have central air the vent for which is located in the middle of the ceiling. There is a window in the room, but I can't exactly vent directly out of it and winters are cold here. So during the cold seasons when the a/c isn't on, but instead the heat is being used, what can I do? I can keep the temp in the room itself at 70-75F via central air and I can get clean air into the room through other parts of the house I guess. Any suggestions?

Medium

This is where I am kind of unsure on what to do. I was thinking 2/3 Fox Farms Ocean Forest Soil, 1/3 Perlite in 2 gallon pots for the entire cycle ( Autoflowering strains ). I'd assume that autoflowering strains can take the nutes from the Ocean Forest Soil right away and that it will last them the first couple weeks? And again I'd like to know how many plants I could fit in this setup, and if maybe I'd be better off with 1 gallon pots to fit more plants ( they will get 12"-16"max I believe ).

Nutes

Again, here I am unsure if this system is the way to go and if maybe it's not enough on it's own. I am a total noob so any help is much appreciated.
Fox Farm Liquid Soil Formula
1/4 Grow Big 1/4 Big Bloom once at the start of week 2
1/2 Grow Big 1/2 Big Bloom once at the start of week 3
1 Grow Big 1 Big Bloom at the start of week 4
Weeks 5-9 1 heavy feeding of Tiger Bloom or should I also introduce this new nutrient gradually starting off at maybe 1/2?

Also should I follow the instructions that tell you to use a few teaspoons every watering? One heavy feeding a week as listed above? or both? This is something I really need cleared up, thanks in advance.

Ok that's all my brain can manage to give me at the moment, I'm sure there are other details that would be necessary. I will have all necessary meters and will be keeping PH around 6-6.5 I think was the golden number? Using the PH Up/Down kit by HtG... Any advice welcome and appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Holy shit man, you really did your research. You pretty much nailed everything IMHO...

A couple of quick comments:

- you can do 16 plants in that space if you like (1 per sqft) in the 2 gallon containers
- Ocean Forest is a crapshoot whether you get a hot bag or not, but I use it start to finish
- don't feed Grow Big/Tiger Bloom every watering, alternate with plain water OR I use the Grow Big on alternate waterings. It's all organic and it's pretty weak stuff...
- start Tiger Bloom at 1/4 strength
- optionally continue Grow Big thru week 5 to keep the 12/12 stretching down to a minimum (I believe in this)
- I've heard that fan/filter combo is shit but cannot confirm personally. The price makes me nervous, but all HTG prices make me nervous!

My 2 cents.

Thanks for the info you definitely cleared up my questions on feeding so +rep... Is there anything else that I SHOULD feed them to get better results? Also, are 16 autoflower plants going to do well under a 400w MH/HPS? I had someone tell me not to do more than 6 in that tent. As for the fan/filter idk I've read nothing but great things about HtG and this setup is already up to 10000+ $s from nothing so I'm definitely pushing it. Any other opinions welcome and appreciated. Another thing that just caught my attention, how will seedlings do (autoflower) going directly from germination to a 2 gallon pot (2/3 FF Ocean Forest Soil 1/3 Perlite) under the 400w MH? Hang it 3 ft away maybe for the first week or two then bring it to 20 from the tops or what? Trying to get every little detail worked out ahead of time!

400W is ideal for a 4x4 space, and I see nothing wrong with 1 plant per square foot especially autos.

Regarding feeding, you can grow start to finish with the FoxFarm trio with excellent results. There is nothing more necessary, but everyone has their little tricks and I'm sure you'll hear more about that as you ask questions. To be honest, you could kick ass with nothing more than 1/2 strength on that same schedule. It's tough to say "oh you'll get this much more yield with this" because without side-by-side controlled comparisons it's impossible to prove. Maybe the best advice I can give is for you to keep it simple for your first grow and try some other stuff next time if you so desire.

Yeah man, it all adds up in $$ but you can also pay it off after your first harvest if you choose to, so that's one way to look at it. :)

BTW scratch my comment about continuing Grow Big thru week 5, you're doing autos... durrr.

Start Tiger Bloom at the first signs of flowering.

Ohhh that is the way I'm looking at it =]!!! So autoflower seedlings will have no trouble going directly into 2 gallon pots and under the 400w MH from germination? ++rep for all!

I've never done autos so I'll let someone else comment on whether to start in the 2 gallon pots or start small plus transplant. The MH will be fine from the beginning as long as you are super careful about keeping the light far enough away to not burn them up or overpower with too much light. 2-3 feet away to start...

Ok that's what I thought and thanks again.... Do you have any ideas on my venting issues? I'm able to vent out of the tent but unable to vent from the room to the outside. I have central air the vent for which is located in the middle of the ceiling. Winters are cold here so I won't be able to use the a/c but I'll be able to keep temps in the room at 70-75F and could possibly bring clean air in from the rest of the house, would that be sufficient or anyone have any other ideas? Would this fan/filter combo with the charcoal be worth the extra few $? http://www.htgsupply.com/Product-GrowBright-6in-Tall-Boy-Inline-Fan-&-Charcoal-Filter-Combo.asp

p.s. will I need another fan like a pc fan on my exhaust? or will the inline fan take care of it all?

p.s. When flushing plants (guessing ill start at the beginning of week 7 with autoflowers). How often should I flush them and do they still need to be fed/watered during this time? Thanks in advance. Also what is a cheap and effective way to drain excess water from the tray in my tent?
