Day 15: I messed up.

Shortly before taking the last photo shoot I noticed the first signs of spider-mites. So I applied neem oil. Big mistake on my part for not diluting enough. Now half of my fan leaves are burnt up. They wont look normal for a while, basically until the affected leaves die off or burn up. I'm going to baby my plants for the rest of the cycle but they will most likely yield substantially less. With that being said it destroyed the spider mites completely along with my hopes and dreams. Tomorrow is my birthday so that's good I guess. Thanks for following along, it won't be as pretty of a journey now. I will probably only end up posting about this grow once or twice more before harvest if the quality doesn't improve. I'm very angry with myself.

The trellis net is going up once stretch is over which should be a few days from now, but it probably won't be needed because the buds may never develop due to this mistake. Normally I'm fine with making mistakes because I learn something, but this just blows.

Sincerely,
IlovePlants

I am being a bit harsh on myself, I rinsed them on Tuesday once I noticed the initial discoloration, which by the way looked completely like a phosphorus deficiency for about a day. All the new growth is unaffected so far, and some of the affected leaves have even sprung back after the wash. It was just such a rookie mistake because I have been busy with life. I did this once before I had most of my grow knowledge, so hopefully this clone is like the Caramel Ice in my profile picture. She turned out just fine but she took an extra week. I think it may help my second tier buds though because a lot of the largest fan leaves are shriveling or have fallen off. Thanks for keeping me positive! I watered them today, and at least they are praying to the holy cob again.
Sincerely,

I did the same thing myself under the IG100, burnt the shit out of them..............it was ugly, mine never fully recovered. Still being made fun of for that run:wink:

Just a lesson learned grower, no biggie

Coming soon...
An update. It's day 20 and the plants are loving life again, Centery is still a little angry but it is what it is. I may have lost a couple days of stretch from the whole ordeal which is what really bugs me. Overall they have sprung back into shape, it won't be a record breaking harvest but I'm pretty happy with the turn around they did. Both bloom boosters are installed and running, but I need to make a reflector for one of them. Right now they are running at 29w/sqft. I gotta run now. But stay tuned...

Day 20: The dance of the sugar plums!

Righty:

Centery:
IMG_8763.JPG IMG_8762.JPG

I'll post the rest of the photo-shoot in a minute since there is a ten photo limit. There will be a few shots of Righty, and then one shot of the room. I don't have white balance active on my camera, I just wait for the MPC2 to swing above the plants when I want white shots. The whole idea of this room is to maintain an even shadow, because even the shaded part of the plant is receiving light from the sky, ground and surrounding environment, just not directly from the sun. I'm trying to keep my plants photosynthesizing at all times, but I want to give them ample light and times of rest. If my photon cannons sat above a single spot in the canopy it would decimate the chlorophyll in less than a day, but I keep my cannons mobile to spread the light around. Righty gives me a lot of hope for the future as she literally outgrew my expectations, Lefty has so many tops though, I'm assuming that she will out yield Righty by a little bit, but considering the work I had to put into Lefty I will probably train plants similar to Righty with my phenotype of this strain.

Centery is surprising me considering the damage she sustained from the Neem. I knew that she would have a harder time with it since she is a more stressed plant in general, but overall I can't believe she's still in the room. She was pretty toasted, and almost all of her shade leaves dropped from the neem. I do notice one branch on her that is suspect right now, and I'm going to keep an eye on it. I can't tell if it's pissed from the neem still or if it's trying to flower still. Right now I'm guessing that it will pop out a few nanners, but I don't think she will be in the funk long enough for them to develop virile pollen. I would assume that branch will start to nard out but then start spitting out new pistils.

Overall the thing that is amazing me is the consistency of the tops. The tops on all the buds are almost indistinguishable from each other. Check out the shot of the top on Centery, and the top of Righty. I had to go back and check the SD card to make sure I didn't upload the same photo twice. The density and node spacing are almost identical across the canopy.

In the next 5 days I'm going to try to get the trellis up, my main objective with the trellis is spacing and support for late flowering. I may wait until the first bulk to put up the trellis if she is a late trichomer. There is no reason to put any stress on my plants positive or negative at the moment. If I do end up needing to remove Centery I don't think it will heavily affect yield. I'm taking a watch and wait approach. This grow has been so different from my past experience and yet it feels almost the same. I must admit I do miss perpetual growing with 3 to 5 strains. I don't know if it's the lights or the plants, but I can't stop feeling the Christmas spirit right now. I enjoy it heartily.

More to come,
IlovePlants

Other than some burnt tips, missing shade leaves, and a day delay. I think that Righty is about on track.

Right now I'm very happy that the plants have turned it around, but I'm a little worried about Centery. We'll see what happens. I'm going to install some 1ft T-5 lights under the bloom boosters or in the corners depending on how it looks like the light is spreading. After they are installed I should be at 30w/sqft. I've never stressed a plant to hermie, so it will be funny if she ends up a he/she. Honestly this grow is far from ideal. We will see how the plants perform considering my lack of consistency. Ideally I would be growing 4 plants in each 4x4, but plant count says I can only have 6. I'm going to post again, but it's a bit off topic. Extra credit goes to whoever can help me out.

Sincerely,

Recently I've been wondering things about strains I don't grow, and I'm wondering if anyone has information. The reason I'm asking in this thread is because I'm wondering how they respond to LEDs, but I would also like to know if they were grown under or thrive beneath monochromatic LEDs.
1) Has anyone grown any strains that seem to love the blurple/pink lighting?
2) Any strains that seem to hate monochromatic LEDs?
3) What the hell happened to Bubblegum and Bubblicious?
4) Know anyone breeding/growing Bubblegum/crosses?
5) What would you consider your favorite smelling/tasting strain available on the market in seed form?
6) Why aren't people stabilizing genetics anymore? It seems like IBL, F1, F2 and F3 are off of seed descriptions.

Basically these questions are rising up out of my current experience with the ever changing cannabis market in Colorado and abroad. 5 years ago I could ask around and find; blueberry, strawberry, pinapple, lemon, lime, grape, and even tangerine strains. They never looked as good as the Kush, Haze, or Chemdawg but I always assumed that people would interbreed them with modern high trichome coverage strains and select the (insert fruit here) phenotype and recross to solidify the new genotype. I can still find them but they look shitty compared to modern strains and the hybridized strains available don't seem to pack the same flavor as the oldschool flavor strains.

It seems like we as growers and breeders have stopped caring about perfecting a strain. It seems like everyone ditches an old established line in search of that new super strain. Is it just growers pandering to an ever more casual inexperienced market? I personally feel that it is due to the gold rush mentality that many in the industry seem to have. It seems like TGA still cares, but I worry about the fact that they never seems to inbreed lines. To my knowledge all of his "strains" are F1's and some of the strains you could debate are F2 or F3 simply because he's crossing F1's that are 75% genetically similar. I did a poll at the beginning of the thread to determine roughly what the community feels is the dankest of the dank. It backs up my thoughts on the industry. I think growers are getting sick of the quick cross "strain" establishment of the modern cannabis consuming generation. There was a time, the same time all of the old school classics came out, that people wouldn't or couldn't call something a strain without inbreeding it to F2, most people would call F1 a cross since there is no knowing which alleles are dominant, partially dominant, co dominant, or recessive without growing out the seeds and selecting the phenotype. I think that feminized seeds are the best thing for the grower and consumer, but the worst things when it comes to breeding cannabis. Why interbreed when you can "clone" a super plant with your favorite alleles and sell the seeds?

The whole reason that I wrote all of this is because I miss the classic strains, but I know that they were never taken to their potential in the past when knowledge and technology limited our results. Most of all I miss getting an awesome batch of Bubblegum because it seemed to have it all, smell, taste, and bag appeal. These strains are few and far between, but though they come and go they are the only ones capable of standing the test of time. I don't care if it has 19% THC or 25% THC if the 25% tastes horrible and the 19% tastes just like blueberry pie I'm going with the 19% every time.

Grandaddy Purps has consistently blown me away on quality, color, taste, and effect. My club carries a 24% THC pheno that also has intense purpy flavor. I have never seen an uncrossed Blueberry at a club with a THC profile over 15%, and anytime I get BlueDream it seems to dominate on the SSH side. Does anyone know of any companies with a goal like this? Consistent generationally stabilized genetics with a full flavor profile? I'm not saying we need to breed Blueberry over and over hoping that it will mutate into what we want, I'm more saying that if you are going to cross two plants to establish a "strain", you should be able to know that 95/100 females will be displaying the alleles you selected. Anyway I guess I started ranting but...

@IlovePlants I have bubblegum and I love it. It isn't the hardest hitting smoke but it has great flavor. Smells amazing! Definitely life of the party weed because it won't knock you down.
@ttystikk It just became available at my local dispensary. The smell brought me back to the old days immediately. Turns out it was 19%THC, and the smell is off the charts. Intense bubblegum, zebra gum, cotton candy type flavor. I'm doing a special date night with the Mrs; Bubblegum and bubble bath! I think its a winning combination:hump: Yeah, I think that I will have buds that taste and smell this good rather than the last few strains that I had that were 23+% THC. They were so boring in flavor, I like a Kush Haze taste as much as any other stoner but the market saturation on those flavors is too prevalent in the Springs. The only Kush that I could ever tolerate for long periods was Master Kush.

Do you know of anyone with clones of these? I will drive to get them. I'm going to be all over CO next week because the Mrs' friend is in town and we're visiting a friends in Boulder and Denver.

It was so weird that I was ranting about Bubblegum one day, and then it was in the Dispensary today. I've been here for a little over 2 months and I was about to lose hope. Now all I need to do is rant about some old strain that I miss and as long as you reply it should appear!

Sincerely,
IlovePlants

I wouldn't bother looking for strains that prefer red blue monos. the light between 500 and 600 nm, although far away from the chlorophyll peaks is necessary for basic plant robustness and is the key to light penetration deep into the canopy.

Subbed! I'm a fan of the newer, fuely type strains, but will always love a great SD or SSH. Those two were my introduction to chronic, so I will always immediately recognize their smell and taste. I never really got the hype of AK and WW. I guess I can understand a bit of the WW, but I've never had anything that I enjoyed smoking over a SD or a proper OG. If anyone has a GDP/Cindy 99 cross floating around, though, I'd love to chat.

Next run, I'm going to be doing a Sunshine Daydream cut my buddy has. It's not the butter cut, it has a different father, and it grows almost identically to the Gorilla Glue #4. Super chemy, great yielder, awesome smoke. So much flavor on the end of the inhale.

I know this, but having a plant that has the chloroplasts capable of resetting and absorbing that frequency of radiation better than others would be useful to a breeding project. You are talking about plants robustness under specific nm, which I agree they have better results under full spectrum lighting, but I was referring to a plant that would be able to handle extreme saturation of additional red and blue light in the garden without missing a beat. It's not about what light I'm using, it's about what plants will work best for my system. I use a lot of red and blue in my garden, and I want plants that work well with this light. Basically I'm looking for plants that worked particularly well before full spectrum COBs came into existence. I'm not saying that these plants wouldn't work better in full spectrum light, I just want to know which ones could handle the very specific wavelengths that most red and blue panels contain. You don't seem to understand that I was asking for strains that work with that light, and not for people's opinions on how well monochromatic lighting works or whether you think I should be looking for these strains or not. I was one of the people screaming that we needed central nm to provide what the plant expects of the sun 4 years ago when Blackstar was all the rage. What you're saying is true, but not particularly helpful in the context of the question. Thanks for stopping in!

You and me both man. GDP and Cindy 99 were the great/grandparents on the opposite sides in my Paradox project. Sweet D, the mother, was a GDP dominant cross of GDP x Trainwreck, Cheddarwurst, the father, was a Spacedawg X Cheese cross. I was going to back cross the new seeds with Vortex, but alas I had to move and my brother sold/gave away all of the seeds and essentially 3 years of my work. If you find it, keep me in the loop. Thanks for subbing. The whole Paradox project was born around creating a fast bud setting, blockhead structure, stretch indica, with the flavor of Grape/Cherry/Huckleberry that's a bit hard to describe without saying Paradox flavor. I wish I still a few of those frosty little nuggets. The second generation of the project grew particularly well under heavy mono full spectrum lighting that I had in my garden.

I get ya, but your missing the point that red/blues have very poor canopy penetration. I'm not denying the benefits of hitting the red/blue peaks, but it isn't worth developing strains that do better that way cause penetration deep will outweigh any possible benefits
