It's tempting but not the way we do things. Besides, I wouldn't bet that a band of them is being organized right now but not by our side. Once the Trumpees have fully shown that they will believe anything the gloves will be off. The Russians we're pretty obvious about Skripal. I think it was intentional. They can do better.

you think it was just to keep the watchers complacent? so they expect sloppy work and miss the much better agents slipped in while they watch laurel and hardy? or was Skripal a distraction? wonder what called for a distraction that big ?

No, the Skripal's were a message. Putin has a lot of people doing his dirty work. A lot of people he wants to get the message.

The Kashoggi operation was fairly brazen as well. Maybe they just know it doesn't matter any more. Look at that fucking asshole in charge of the Philippines - he's doing it in plain sight.

i don't like Duerte, or support what he's doing, but i do understand how he got in power. the Phillipines were like Mexico, over run with gangs and drug cartels. people were afraid to leave their homes, because the Manila government wasn't doing shit about it, was in fact taking bribes to ignore most of it.
Duerte cleaned up Davao, where he was mayor, and turned it from one of the most dangerous cities in the country into one of the safest ( for citizens, not so much for gang members and cartel members) .
that resonates with the people who are living in fear. apparently they fear him less than they fear the cartels.
and that's what a corrupt, ineffective government gets you, a vacuum that someone like Duerte can not only fill, but exploit.

The problem with identity politics is it distances people from a consistent philosophy and instead becomes a popularity contest where people support their champion even when their champion has feet of clay.

i don't think politics should be a consistent philosophy. all societies change, and the way they interact with each other changes...if you embed yourself into an immutable position, the world will flow past you and leave you behind

Policies that are based upon falsehoods are ones to be avoided for the general good.

For example human sacrifice as an offering to appease a god is no longer practiced because it doesn't work and puts too much power in the hands of the person who chooses the sacrificial victim. Another one is the idea that an absolute monarch whether Philippine or Saudi is the best way to rule a country.
