If you have followed my current thread (see my signature) you have a working idea about this. Alas, the people who might benefit the most aren't reading it due to a poor title choice. That, and I lacked empirical evidence to back up my supposition- you don't need no stinkin expensive LED panels to grow ~ 2ozs of primo shit.

In a nutshell, LEDs have been shrouded in dis/misinfo, much of that due to marketing hype of first generation LED grow lights/fixtures/diodes, and what PAR 'really' means to our beloved mmj.

Taking a page from Mother Nature, who uses the Sun to grow the fruits, and vegetables we eat, and the herbs we smoke, plants exposed to the entire light spectrum (as opposed to just Red or Blue spectrums) grow extremely well. Better than the die-hards care to admit, in fact. I contend they have a little somethin that R/Bs don't.

Farmers plant their seeds in early spring when sun light is mostly white and not very intense. Plants veg under high intensity sun rich in multi-spectrums; they are harvested in the fall, when red spectrums dominate the sun. so when people (I included myself in the beginning) want one light for both veg and flower, I remind you of the saying 'Jack of all trades, master of none'. Anyway, how hard is it to wap out a few household globe bulbs? You read that right!

Stealth growers are gonna love this thread as you can grow a 4ft plant in as little as a 2 X 2 X 5ft area (3 ft plant, one ft for grow pot and one ft for light).

Today NW globe lights (5000K) make excellent veg lights. I took a total of 6 clones, each pair a week apart with the final 2 later as I am experimenting with a technique called Monster Cropping, where you take clones with marble size buds. These are supposed to grow massive colas. We'll see. I am finishing a HOT5 grow using this technique, but they look identical to their mother.

So, for these clones I started out using ONE 22w (100w equivalent) 1600 lumen NW (5000K) household bulb ($29.95), cheap enough,but prices are dropping fast these days.

I used a simple DIY bubbler (see pics) which I placed inside a larger tote as I was out of tent space and both tents were under 12/12. I hit the clones with 20 hour light, and paid no attention, as it takes 10-14 days to root. When I peaked inside, I was blown away by the first 2 clones taken: maybe I caught them before the hormones began to switch for flowering, but they are pretty damn big.

I have a bunch of totes laying around from previous grow experiments. This one already had the bottom cut out, perfect to raise the light due to plants outgrowing the space. I added a second bulb 7.5w 490 lumen WW (3000K) cause it was available plus some WW is good to blend during veg.

I will finish some of these under WW LEDs only. WTF you say? HiloReigns just finished a grow under 28w of WW and his buds look excellent.

First a call for help. If someone can tell me how to get spell check back (when using FF)-It disappeared along with page links- a couple weeks ago.

Right click on the reply field and make sure Check Spelling is checked. You may have to uncheck and check it once or twice to get it to work. Otherwise you're probably blocking a script or blocking RIU if you're using No Script with FF. And I've always considered 5000K a CW, but with LEDs, Kelvin ratings are mostly horseshit so we're probably both right :). Cree calls 5000K Daylight btw.

I've always considered 5000K to be the closest we get to natural light. At least with CFL's, that's the color I pick because it doesn't mess with my eyes when the lights are on and the windows are open.

PF: I'm subbed, this fits well into what I've been thinking but not saying(emulating the sun and "full spec")

Morning update. due to the light fixture being too far away from the canopy, I replaced the 7.5w WW with a Philips 17w WW

Have not noticed much since adding the 17w Philips WW, but 2 of the clones are rockin it, 2 have decent root systems, while the 2 Monster clones have no roots yet. Could be, the ppms are too much at this stage, so will move them to colored bottles in the kitchen window

If you look closely in the back of pic 2 you will see a one liter bottle for size perspective.

Not sure when, but the 50w Intense Basking light in the LED tent burned out. I put the Philips WW (which was in the clone pod) back in to help Phoenix (clones mom) finish. Put a 12w 5000K in the clone pod. It is much whiter to the eye than the 22w, which is also sold as 5000K. The slight pinkish Utilitech 22w is likely adding a pinch of reds- a good thing for the clones root development

ive often wondered if cloning in the dark could be done. or what is the most minimal light for cloning. my best results cloning wise come from very very limited light i always just use ambient light from a grow area rather than focus a light on top of my clones. if i have used a light over the clones it was something like a 13w 5000k cfl.

I usually put fresh clones in my kitchen window (faces south) in a green Grolsch bottle until roots appear. Then would move to HOT5 with 2 activated bulbs ~ 100w (they only work in pairs). Since HOT5 is fully activated finishing off some other clones, I had to improvise. It's what I am known for, no?

This time I popped the clones under the 22w 5000K Utilitech (FEIT) bulb as a test, plus there was no place else to put them. (Necessity being the Mother of Invention, and all) As 2 of the clones outgrew the pod height, I increased height which then put the bulb 2ft from the canopy, so I added another bulb. Have since split the difference in distance from canopy, but the 2 biggest clones are rapidly closing the gap.

Needless to say, I am stoked by the result. This indicates that anyone can veg a bunch of seedlings/clones under ~ 30w of 5000K LEDs. As my vanity fixture has 3 receptacles, maybe a 3000k (lower wattage maybe by 1/2) in the middle + a 5000K @ 10w Cree on each end is sounding like a match here, so $30 (3 @ 10w Crees) + vanity fixture (~$20), and you have seedlings/clones covered for many years to come.

That takes us to Flowering; the majority of which (if not all) can be handled with ~ 60w-100w @3000K/plant. Again, off the shelf stuff- Cree, Utilitech, EcoSmart.... I would like to play with a couple pontoons 630-640-650-660 and maybe a separate one with 730 for a brief after party light.

seems like there would be a big difference between just cloned and waiting for roots to appear and roots sprouting. While waiting for the roots to start up I think very low fluoro light should be enough. But after that as much fluoro as possible (like a 4 bulb t5 HO) seems warranted.

Rather than using a metal-core PCB, Heraeus enables the placement of LEDs directly on aluminum substrates with the electrical contacts isolated by the Celcion thick-film material. The company says that LEDs run 10°C cooler when installed on Celcion compared with metal-core PCBs because the thermal-interface material is eliminated. The Celcion material is only selectively applied to the aluminum substrate where needed for electrical isolation. The result, according to the company is lower SSL product cost because you can drive LEDs harder for more light output and use smaller heat sinks.

I can't wait to take pics tomorrow. The primary leafs on 2 of the clones are outgrowing the mother's, when she was in veg. and she had huge primary leafs.
