Let's talk about curing...

I am curious as to peoples experiences with curing their marijuana. Let's be honest, it's tough. I'll be honest: I could really, really use some helpful advice. Right now I'm curing for the 3rd time with my best results to date (the first two being moldy disaster!), and although I'm happy with my results, I'm not ecstatic. I want to be in love when I open that jar.

Please share your experiences. What worked? What didn't? Amazing tricks?!? BE HONEST!!!! We will all learn so much from each others mistakes. No bull shit, please.

I'll get the ball rolling. I'm growing again for the first time since my early 20's when I hd no idea what I was doing, and not enough money to do it right anyway. I made it through drying fine but didn't understand the concept behind burning, left the lids on too long and ended up with moldy weed. Very disappointing.

Now I'm older and wiser and have found 3 hours open every 12 hours seems about right. I should mention I'm in WA where the RH is usually around 60%. I put about 2 ounces in each mason jar and leave them on their side. It's been curing almost 2 weeks and is coming along nicely, but it's still a bit stringy when I break it apart and has a hint of that "green" smell. I'd really like to d better. Is it just more time?

I have done this many ways well every way, but I have found that they must be a certain dry before u can jar them with no worries and no need to open. So, dry them more before u put them in jars. My stuff loses a lot of smell, but when u cut a bud the smell is great. Means I lock it in and I never get any mold or issues and I just don't want to mis one of so many jars and have it ruined so I let them get dry dry dry. Just don't think to much and don't try for perfect because that little bit of moisture with a few mold spores spells garbage. IF they feel moist when u jar them u better keep dumping them out every day for at least 3 w eeks and re drying so I don't let that happen and only have to open the jars a couple time in first two weeks to be sure..

Ps. I have never seen anyones that locks in so much that u can't really smell it until it is cut up but don't get me wrong u can smell it just u don't get that huge rush of dead WoodPussy until u unlock the goodness that is secure for years if it was to stick around more than a month but alas it never does.. Friends and enemys come out of the wood work for my Wood Pussy goodness. Google it if u think I am being rude.. Now that u have googled it say sorry for your thoughts.

I let mine get fairly dry then jar it for at least a month or 2, seems to get the flavor just right.

I dry all my stuff in grow tents over the course of a week. A few days while its still on the plant. Few days hanging with the branches and leaves. Few days with just the bud drying.

Then once that process is done i use a tupperware thats old and the top doesnt lock air tight. This lets you not have to burp it.

Leave everything in there and flip the nugs on top with the ones on bottom every 3 days or so. Usually only take 6-9 to get it where i like it.

Yup its all in the dry , if you dry it correctly the cure will just enhance the bud..
But dont think the cure is going to make your bud more potent , its just going to bring out whats already there.
Good Luck.

Thanks everyone, interesting stuff. More evidence that it's and art an there is no right way to paint a picture so long as the picture is pretty. I think the best course of action is after my next take down (about 2 weeks) I will try all of these things. I will start a thread if anyone cares to follow.

The trick to a good cure is the right drying.

Most people jar their bud too early.

Wait until the bud is crispy dry.

I mean dry enough to burn in a spliff.

I like mine to be crumbly dry before jarring.

Then just jar them. This allows any stem moisture to slowly come through the herb.

There is also the terrarium humidity gauge you can use to keep track on moisture too.

55-65% RH is supposed to be optimum for curing. If it exceeds 65% you need to dry for longer.

(5-month curing Pineapple Express)

Here is my curing process.

1) Dry your stems in a dark room with air movement, but not pointing at the bud. Don't over dry because if moisture drops below 55% all curing stops and your bud will never get any better. (Dry room RH should be low, use a dehumidifier, I like 40%).

2) I place the bud in mason jars when the stem snaps, for me about three days, but don't rush this step.

3) Buy a small hydrometer from cigar shop or online for $10-15 and throw it into one of the jars. Here is a sample: click

4) Burp the jars every 12 hours for about an hour.
(This is very important step don't skip it. Burp until the hydrometer reads 70% or below for several days - set an alarm on your phone to burp)

5) Once I get the jarred bud to a stable 60-65%, I use Boveda humidity packs and they do the rest. 62% packs work best.

I use SimonD's chart as a guideline:

+70% RH - too wet, needs to sit outside the jar to dry for 12-24 hours, depending.

65-70% RH - the product is almost in the cure zone, if you will. It can be slowly brought to optimum RH by opening the lid for 2-4 hours.

60-65% RH - the stems snap (similar to when you were drying earlier), the product feels a bit sticky, and it is curing.

55-60% RH - at this point it can be stored for an extended period (3 months or more) without worrying about mold. The product will continue to cure.

Below 55% RH - the RH is too low for the curing process to take place.

hey friend, if your still having trouble curing i would be happy to lend a helping hand, ive noticed if you have unpredictable conditions in your curing area where you store the jars it can become very tricky, if you absolutley have to and keep having problems then what uneed to do is put a hydgrometer in each individual jar, if Rh gets above 65-70% then the jars need to be burped more. good luck, feel free to PM me if ur still having problems and need help :peace:

edit: prosperian has the right idea, that pineapple exp. looks fucking awesome, good job on that cure friend!

Has any one used a Foodsaver for curing? If I really let them dry would sealing them in bags with a Foodsaver for curing be a good idea?
