Looking for suggestions on water pump

Using an 800gph pump but not getting the water movement I expected, thinking about a Drummond utility pump but not sure what to expect for water temp fluctuation. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I also thought about adding another of the ones I have?

How far are you trying to move the water? You may have to scrounge up some change and get a pressurised water pump they can be a little pricey.
 
Not far just a lot of water volume. I was trying to simplify by using the same diameter pipe all the way around I don't know if that part of this issue or not.

If the second picture of tote outside of the tent is your resivour then try and elevate it and get some PVC that can adjust to it and let gravity help.
 
Ya that's the res. U can't tell but the bulk head placement in the back 2 totes isn't ideal, I should had pipe come out the back and then turn to come back up the other side but instead I just connected the back two totes in the middle, I'm sure flow could be better

Maybe try making the pipes connecting to the rez even in length? Is your pump just sitting in the rez? Or do you have it piped to send?
 
At first I had some hose on it pushed into the first elbow, but it wasn't flowing that well so I took it off and tried to line the hole up with the pipe, the out and the in are the same length, there's just extra 90s in the return cuz I punched the hole in the wrong spot for the out pipe, I wanted it in the middle but was moving to fast

I got a inexpensive vivoson 800gph water pump, I was thinking about putting another one in the back tote closest to the tent door to kinda suck it from the other back tote and push it toward the res, but idk about having another pump that close to a root zone

try setting your rez in the middle and make feed pipe same length as the return? I don’t know if my suggestion even works tho. My little 5 gallon works with even piping. Here is a picture of how my pump is fitted in tightly to the feed:

Now that I read it correctly, get some pipe to slide flush into the Send pipe and reduce it down to attatch to your pump like you see in my picture

The red would be the missing return line (much smaller PVC or hose, maybe 3/4 or 1") you want to add in. Best to use an inline pump if you can, but you could still use a submersible in the res if you add another small bulkhead.
 
That's what I had done in my original attempt, it pushes ok into the first two then kinda dies out, that's kinda what I was getting at with this thread, determining if the water volume was too much for the pump and I should go up or if maybe the flow of water is impeded by the layout

I had wondered why everyone did it like that and now I know. My idea was to just get a nice current in like a circular flow.

Yeah setting it up that way should fix it, and help equalize the flow. Swapping that smaller straight pipe in between the 2 totes on the end with a reducer T fitting is probably the best bet if you can still fit one in. You might need another bushing or reducing type adapter in addition to get whatever T fitting you find down closer to 1" or even less to run back to the res. Your options are more limited with plus size fittings like that, so don't expect to find a 3x3x3/4" reducer T for example...

It looks like you have 2-1/2" or bigger main lines which is good though, and should work ok even with all the 90s. Even if the 800gph spec isn't true, even 400GPH should recirculate the whole system many times after so many minutes. Depending on which bulkhead you fix the pump to inside the res with your current config could make a big difference, but ya I would pull from the other side instead of trying to make a complete loop work.

The mag drive pumps are kinda finicky like that.. They seem to work best when fed with a longer length of smaller diameter tubing that is around the same size as the actual port, and installed toward the very end of the line right before the res when possible. The small impellers aren't designed to push or pull all the water at once, and need the smaller incoming line to act like a bottle neck of sorts as it feeds the pump.

The thing is, you really need an inline Y- filter before the pump (whether inline or submersable) to trap any debri from clogging it up when setting up this way. The smaller 3/4 and 1" regular garden irrigation y-filters are too small IMO, and clog up too quick, unless you install 2 or 3 of them side by side with another small manifold. Or, just buy one bigger 2" banjo brand y-filter, with 80 mesh screen for around 50-60 bucks, which is what I reccomend for any RDWC systems. They have way more surface area than thy small ones, and never clog.

Check out the videos from Gary at PA Hydroponics. I always wanted to do rdwc but terrified of the amount of water. He builds some nice systems to order but also shows videos of how to build exactly how he does down to the small details and even shows his materials and how he sources them

Always best to do some good planning imo to not waste material and build a good system!
