Making Concentrates from Trim

I'm totally new to this (other than assisting friends with a few grows). Most of the people I know well are old school and strictly flower but I like concentrates too. I've heard you can use trim to make concentrates but I'm wondering if there's a huge dip in quality or if it all gets leveled out in the extraction process?

Trim might work for bubble hash (not really), but for concentrates you have to use good bud, otherwise your wasting a lot of time.
Thanks for the quick response! Just trying to figure out the best use of trim, other than lining a trash can LOL

PS. Love your profile picture - I love me some Father Ted.

The people who owned a dispensary were debating with one of the guys who used to make their oil, and others. They were saying that you really couldn't tell the different between bho made with bud vs trim as far as quality goes.

^... but I mean in reality, there is a quality difference between a closed-loop dewaxed nug run vs just your "average" cheap priced shatter imo.

I'd run trim for oil back in the days. Maybe like 3g good quality shatter from a oz of trim roughly?

I prefer to keep my trim for edibles and I will never open blast and equipment is not readily available. Rosins the way these days lol.

Yeah, I've read a bit about rosin and thought about trying it out with a flat iron. Not sure if that really works if I need to invest in a press.

But using the trim for edibles is a good idea, I'll probably go ahead with that. Thanks!

Yeah, I tried once and concluded it wasn't worth the effort. Press is the way to go!

Trim for Edibles is awesome! :weed:

Just remember that the active Ingredients aren't soluble in water so you need to either dissolve it out with an alcohol or leech it out into another fat. If you put trim, water and butter into a slow cooker for 10 hours you will have seriously good cannabutter. If you make a non toxic blast chamber and get some clean butane or iso, you can extract the oil and add that to anything you want, even vapouriser fluid or make a tincture. Lots of options, shit I even make bho from early veg fan leaves... Nothing gets wasted.

Oh, it turns out some decent RSO? I don't use it, but my friend had skin cancer and was using RSO, but having trouble affording it. Maybe I can use my trim to make her some RSO then. Thanks for the tip!

Is it worth investing in something like the Magical Butter Machine or do you think a slow cooker's better? Or are they pretty much the same thing?

Magic butter machine works, it's handy as it stirs itself and has timers, different temps ect....The problem I have with it, it turns all the materials into paste, your butter will have loads of plant material as the particles become basically unstrainable....it does make decent butter, but I prefer the slow cooker myself.

I mostly use trim to make my concentrates, since flower is more valuable, but I still love concentrates. I don't mass produce them though, I only work a few ounces at a time.

The KEY is in the material if you have really good quality trim you can get great quality concentrates. I ONLY use the sugariest sugar trim and popcorn nugs if I have any. I won't run trim with fan leaves in it at all!

If you want to try home made concentrates there are a few good options. Rosin is fantastic if you can get the process right, and it doesn't use any solvents. However I don't know how well trim works for rosin.

Personally for home extractions I advocate for QWET/QWISO. These are both alcohol extractions which are fairly simple to get right and require very little investment or special equipment. You can safely perform these at home with little risk as long as your not a moron(open flames near alcohol or the vapors is bad incase your wondering). You can get a really nice quality extract.

What are you guys using for extraction of oil?

I seen one bho rig that looked like a rocket, it was a tube with 3 sprawled out legs for a base.

My brother in law used to use everclear

Magic butter machine is just an overpriced utensil for lazy People. Shit you can do this over an open fire in your back yard if you wanted Satan infused devil butter.
I peraonally use Newport butane which is very pure and cheap. I have a stainless tube with a coffee filter taped to one end and a small blast hole at the top. I made it myself with materials I found... I'm currently looking into making a rosin press out of my bench vise. I will retrofit heated plates that slide on and off.. it is nice to get away from chemical extraction if at all possible

For sure man, I posted a tutorial on my thread a few years ago. I would have to dig for what page its on, but I know it has helped a few people get the process down for making QWISO/QWET.

Ethanol like everclear works great, 91% Isopropyl is what I use most of the time because its cheap. Bho works but is not the safest process to perform at home unless you have all the right equipment and knowledge to do it right.
