1 in 3 says Trump did not have secret documents at Mar-a-Lago: survey
One-third of adults in a new survey indicated they don’t believe former President Trump had top secret and other classified material at his Mar-a-Lago estate this summer.

The Marquette Law School poll released Thursday found that 67 percent of respondents said that they believe he did have such documents, although the results varied widely among partisan groups.

Thirty-nine percent of Republicans said that they believe Trump had top secret and classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, compared to 65 percent of independents and 93 percent of Democrats.

The FBI executed a search warrant at Trump’s Florida property in August, saying agents retrieved some 33 boxes with roughly 100 classified documents.

Trump and his allies have accused the search of being politically motivated, and the former president told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Wednesday evening that he could declassify sensitive documents just “by thinking about it.”

Most adults in the new survey who expressed a favorable view of Trump, regardless of party, did not agree that he had secret documents in his possession, while 8 in 10 with an unfavorable opinion said that he did.

Eighty-five percent of Republicans with an unfavorable opinion of Trump said that they believed he had top secret documents, compared to a quarter of Republicans who held a favorable view of the former president.
Two-thirds of Republicans polled also said they would like to see Trump run for president in 2024, which is down slightly from July.

The Mar-a-Lago search has led to a flurry of attacks against the FBI and Justice Department levied by Trump and some Republicans.
Only 11 percent of Republicans indicated they had a great deal of confidence in the FBI, compared to 29 percent of Democrats, according to the new poll.

Sixteen percent of Republicans said they had no confidence at all in the FBI, and an additional 25 percent said they had very little confidence, figures that both outpaced Democrats and independents.

The presence of documents with classification markings have further complicated the case.

A federal judge had approved a special master to examine the documents seized from Mar-a-Lago and weed out privileged materials, temporarily blocking the Justice Department from using the documents in their criminal investigation.
But an appeals court on Wednesday granted the Justice Department’s request to continue reviewing the documents with classification markings.

The new poll was conducted between Sept. 7 and Sept. 14 through interviews with 1,448 U.S. adults. The margin of error is 3.4 percentage points.

Trump claims presidents can declassify documents ‘even by thinking about it’
Former President Trump in a new interview asserted presidents don’t have to go through a formal process to declassify sensitive documents and can do so “even by thinking about it.”

The former president’s comments came as he has repeatedly argued that he declassified secret and top-secret documents he took with him to his Florida home after leaving the White House in 2021 amid a Justice Department investigation into his handling of classified materials.

“There doesn’t have to be a process, as I understand it,” Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity. “If you’re the president of the United States, you can declassify just by saying, ‘It’s declassified.’ Even by thinking about it.”

“There can be a process, but there doesn’t have to be. You’re the president. You make that decision. So when you send it, it’s declassified,” Trump added. “I declassified everything.”

Though presidents have broad power to declassify records, doing so sets off a chain of events, as the intelligence agencies that manage such records must take additional steps.

Trump and some of his allies have been insistent that the former president declassified all of the documents that he took with him upon leaving the White House. The FBI searched his Mar-a-Lago estate last month after a January search found dozens of classified, secret and top-secret documents.
Trump’s attorneys in a filing last week repeatedly noted that he had the power to declassify records but stopped short of saying he actually did so despite a month of the former president airing the excuse.

The Justice Department responded by pointing out that Trump’s legal team was insinuating, but not fully asserting, that Trump had declassified the documents.

Trump told Hannity that the General Services Administration (GSA) and other White House staff were involved in packing up boxes at the end of his term with pictures, newspaper articles and other materials.

The GSA, however, says its role in the transition phase for the outgoing president and vice president includes IT support, financial management, parking, furniture, vehicles, office equipment and administrative support.

“The GSA also works with the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), as necessary, to provide support to the former Presidents in the establishment and maintenance of their libraries,” the organization states on its website. “These services are only provided in the event of a change of Administration.”

Time for a golden oldie to be brought out and ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME

He's squirming under the hot lights now and tied himself in knots with lies while he's running out of rope. He's only running around because of election considerations, not policy, he's not running for office. Anyway, that's the story of dead man walking, he's also useful for the democrats to have running around loose while coming apart at the seams during the election. He's a disaster for the GOP, throws them off, buries their messaging and is the ugly face of fascism in America.

I was seriously expecting this to have been from The Onion.

Alex Jones had his defense team to cook his goose. Looks like That Man does not require outside assistance at this point. Everything he is saying on the record sure looks to me like self-incrimination of variable severity.

The trouble is, even should he be put permanently away, we have the exposed core of the GOP quietly tearing out their hair muttering “stop saying what we are thinking out loud!” His greatest service to the republic may yet be the incrimination of his stalwarts, like Graham, McCarthy and the rest of the We Hate Women And Most Everyone caucus.

When are the Trumpers gonna storm the 11th circuit courthouse to demonstrate their displeasure? How many death threats have they and "Deep state Dearie" received over the unforgivable crime of holding Trump accountable? Someone needs to keep track and maintain a database to correlate Trump's rhetoric, with the numbers of death threats his targets receive and the number of terrorist acts committed. Donald always attacks judges who rule against him, and his mob of morons reflexively follows up with doxing and death threats.

Wasn't this obvious from the very beginning of this fiasco?

“Plaintiff suggests that he may have declassified these documents when he was President. But the record contains no evidence that any of these records were declassified,” the judges wrote. “In any event, at least for these purposes, the declassification argument is a red herring because declassifying an official document would not change its content or render it personal.”

There is something very fishy about Judge Cannon's ruling. This ruling stinks of corruption. Some speculate she's currying favor for a future promotion. Or maybe she's just wildly caught up in the cult of Trump. Regardless of her motive, she has demonstrated her own lack of recognition of what "rule of law" means. We see time and again people like this simply can't follow the law themselves. Scrape the skin of a rotten apple and one will see the corruption inside. It's my bet that we will soon see reports indicating she has broken laws and acted in a radically biased or corrupt manner. Investigations will then commence.

No.

That would be a favor to the overthrow contingent. His fall from legitimacy must be documented as the system he sought to break destroys him with the irresistible leisure of an advancing ice sheet. It is necessary but not sufficient [for the welfare of the republic] to expose and reverse the minority-rule agenda now in open play, and process its principal agents with the same slow, procedurally impeccable doom.

welcome back, cc

We've seen it time and again. Trump's MAGA acolytes follow their leader's example when it comes to laws. They don't seem think laws apply to them when they are acting to benefit their cult.

BUT a Black man who is stopped for no good reason while driving home from work "should comply to any and all orders by police". Lawful orders or not. MAGA fascists don't see the contradiction.

I dare say the trumpers and the Mennonites around here still love him. But 99% of the flags etc are down. Probably with the klan ware now hidden. The people here in Southern Ohio have lost their minds.

Thanks, just popped back in briefly, won't really be back until Dec. when I get laid off, works crazy, boss,a mellow well liked guy passed on 1 week prior to the season from a minor operation, subsequently the members brought in a dude who clashed w/everybody,gone in less than a month,a nationwide search by members brought me a 31 yo who has the knowledge but doesn't have the life experience to deal w/40,50,60 yo people, even fkd up payroll, feel like I'm on a surfboard as he has turned a schedule of 20+yrs upside down.Sorry, back to the point I've never felt such a acrimonious divide in our country,I used to be pretty apolitical and am pretty much a pragmatic centrist Dem. pushed a little more left by such a gutless, vile, rogues gallery of a Rep' party that I often disagreed with but never held in the utter contempt that I know do,from 2016 on I still have to pinch myself that all this is really going down.
