Just curious if it's still ok to call Mexicans Mexicans. I'm not racist so fuck you but, like I f I was describing a Mexican to a Mexican and called him Mexican would that be fucked up? Only other thing I could think of to say is, "they are Spanish". The mother fucker ain't from Spain so I don't say that. I just hope it's not offensive to say mexican. Poll yes or no.

The only people offended by getting called Mexican is anybody with darker skin that does not hail from Mexico. Don't call a Cuban or anybody else Mexican.

Well, mexicans are mainly of Amerindian, Iberian or mixed descent. The Spanish presence of around 200 years means they can lay claim to some part of Spanish culture, much like many parts of the Caribbean. (Trinidad's Christmas music is based on Spanish guitar music 0_o;) It depends on the person though. Someone may be proud to be called "Mexican" embracing the multiculturalism and individuality of their country, or they may feel like they are segregated from the rest of north America or feel the name is derogatory because of people's dislike of Mexicans. Those of Aztec/Mayan etc descent might feel offended if they are referred to as Spanish- they did kind of take over- and they may not embrace Spanish affiliation.
And someone dark-skinned from a Spanish speaking country like Trinidad or Cuba might be offended at being slows Mexican as it would be used as a blanket term for any 'racial mutt' (I refer to myself as a mutt...) that comes from a Spanish-ruled country.

In America, Mexicans are either descendants or straight from Mexico. I know many Mexicans and have since I was a kid. I've been to quinceaneras, ate menudo and all that. Mexicans are proud to be Mexican. They refer to themselves all the time as either Mexican or Latino. I don't know about European Hispanics, but that's the standpoint of the Americans.

My GF is Cuban and according to her the puerto Ricans are at the bottom of the food chain next to Mexicans. If you call her a Mexican she will whip your ass!

That's what I'm trying to explain. I never said they're not proud to be Mexican, nor was I talking about European Hispanics- Mexicans didn't magically appear as an ethnicity unto themselves. They are Amerindians and/or descendants of Spanish colonialists.

I had a girl that was half Costa Rican and her father still lives there. I slipped up one night and asked her the last time she has been to Puerto Rico. Lesson learned

Lol.

But as I said, I also think part of the offense comes from people calling all dark Hispanics 'Mexican'- like calling all Asian people 'Chinese'.

I personally love the unique mixes of indigenous cultures and influences from other ethnic groups. Sure it was a product of colonialism, but it us part of the people now, and alot of the mexicans, brazilians and Spanish Caribbeans I've met say they are proud of both sides of their culture.
