Misses finally gave me the spare room :)

So after much persuasion she finally gave in and let me use the spare room for growing. So the next stage is planning the setup, which is where i could use the opinion of some more educated individuals than myself. The room itself measures about 14x9ft with a window at one end of the room and a door at the other. My plan is for 40 plants in there under 4x1000w hps lights with a few cfl's for side lighting. Ventilation i've not quite decided on but i'm thinking a 6" fan in the ceiling at one end of the room and a small hole at the bottom of the wall at the other end which leads into a walk in closet. Heating is something that might be an issue, i'm in the uk and at present the temperature is always in single digits, while the lights are on i don't see heat being an issue but during the dark period i fear a drop so i may install a greenhouse tube heater or two. I've not decided on strain yet but it will be a sativa strain, also not yet sure on pot size but will be as big as i can fit.My main questions are:is that enough plants under that lighting?Could i use 600w lights instead or would that be pushing it a bit? Should the light heat be enough to heat the room bearing in mind the room normally sits at around 5c in the current climate?Anything i've missed or can improve on? Very open to suggestions.Would like to say thanks for having me here :) also i'm about to start a little autoflower grow to tide me over til the room is setup. Will get some pics up soon.

well congrats on getting her to agree .............now rem to do something very nice for her something she has been nagging at u to do but u do not want too so put it off (then get her something really shinny and night out with profits )

right now it is cold that will change ..............so anything u do with heating u should have a plan for cooling

how about this idea .............adding a Co2 burner unit and u can decrease the cooling effectiveness of the unit and let the heat transfer into the room to keep it going for the winter........when summer comes around turn the cooling back to 100% and have a good strong AC for the window ...........from looking today the basic math is 1000w is 4000 btu in cooling

the burner will cause the humitidy in the room to go low so might need to set some mason jars ontop of the burner to release water into the air (redneck american trick)

as for your venting ..........u only given us 2 numbers we need 3 to do the math ........math for venting is L x W x H devide it by 3........then u need to add on for factors as in u are using 4 1000w lights so i add atleast 30% and that number would be the minial cubic feet of air u need to move a min

the other choice u have is to redo the room so it is very well insulted (this adviod dectections from flair/ir camera along with helps u controll the area more effectivly........i leave the window open for a AC unti in the summer time spring fall u might get lucky and just need fan feeding outside air in

and the 1000 w 4 of them is about right for that size room

14 feet so take 3 feet way for walk paths .......9 feet take one foot away so that is 11x8 1000w hps in flowering the best harvest is always inside a 4x4 but a 5x5 or a 6x6 is still good

so over kill factor 4 1000w would be about perfect .............and after your first profit turn around change out those extra cover cfls and t5s for some good leds...........LEDs get good depth into the plant better then HIDs those 2 combined u should have the best nugs locally

I'm planning similar space 9.5x13.5. Got 6 gavita pro 1000s on the way. Building a platform foot off ground. Best part sump pump is in that room. Plat form at 5 degree angle. Suck all the drain off. What kinda lights u planning?

i agree with most but LED penetrates better then HID lights. i never used LED's but read the opposite quite a few times. care to elaborate?

it is due to the size of the LED lights

as u know Light comes off in a cone shape ............a hid is good with the long tube on a hps or the phat wide tube of the MH

but LED lights start off very very small and get wider this allows the light to retain more engery longer .................this is the same reason shining a laser point at airplanes is bad where u are the size of it is just a dot but where the plane is the light can be up to 3 or 4 feet wide

it is the reason the rescue lights on life jackets are LED and not something like MH blue lights that u see in some car headlights ............the LED uses less power but the light waves it makes are stronger and can travel much farther

Dont bother with CFLs for side lighting. Your going to waste money. CFL light will only be effective within a few inches so in a room that big it wont be very effective.

There's been side by side test LEDs produce smaller less dense nugs. It's got all the proper UVs but penetration sucks my friend learned expensive way. Back to 1000 hps.

it all depends on who the makers of the LEDs are............see they are forumlas of ligtwaves and each ppl patten the design (then if anyone else tries to use it they are sued)........yes the off brands will not due as well as the HID lights

but a Black Star or a Black Dog LED even the G8LGH ppl wil get u better then a HID
and those tests were done with a 600w LED and a 1000w HID for a 400w reduction in power the LED out proformed HID (and even the 600w led is like a 470w really)

http://www.blackdogled.com/Platinum_XL-U.html
have a look it is a 1500w but it only uses 750w ...........one of those will out do a 1000hid and still use less power

Oh she will be getting something nice for sure lol. The room height is about 7ft. I do intend to insulate the room extremely well, probably overdo it tbh as i live in the middle of a city so being undetectable to the choppers is a must. I'm not entirely sure on how i will insulate it just yet, i like the idea of creating a room within the room and filtering cold air into the void but that would become expensive pretty quickly and funds are tight at the minute. Aiming to keep the setup at around £1k max. Any suggestions regarding insulating would be welcome. With regards to led lighting there is too much controversy surrounding so for the time being i won't bother. To the guy who asked which hps lights i will be using i can't say yet, that's a small decision that i don't need to make yet, it will be about 2 months before i will be operational due to funds, or lack of. At the mo i'm surely in the planning stage and prepping the room. Sorry for delayed response i'm currently using an old phone, waiting for broadband to be installed in a couple days. I'll start replying faster and uploading pictures then. Thanks for the responses.

that is 1320
pound that is 1630..................u have the cash

to make u safe from the eye in the sky ..........u need 6 mil thick mylar then a small air barrier to keep the 2 apart (like those new pains in windows)..........or u need to let the heat travel tho out the house so it all is one temp (this makes the whole place look red not jsut one hot spot)

also to make self hidden u need the exhust air to look right ..............ie it is beiing vented out a dry vent where u would see hot air coming out .......or tie it into your chimme

with u dumping into the attic it will raise that temp and it will be something to look at later ............your going to need to tie it into something else

the other thing to help u hide it is the Ducting .........u need to buy the insulted verison to keep that from popping up (ducting can run up to 120 f) and if your place is 80 and lines of 120 degree temps can be seen in there kinda of know what u are doing

Dude what are you ten years old?

I've seen quite a few posts you made and most if not all are factually wrong. It gets really tiring. Please don't spread misinformation.

You ever see any commercial grows with cfl and led bullshit? Do you think these people don't know what they're doing?

....yeah cfl or led in a tiny closet or for cloning but otherwise no....

check that for yourself

as com grows ..................LED is the standard in most HID is being replace over
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zD-Vq7pG1Fw

that took 15 secs

as for the facts i stated they are all 100% correct ...........if they are wrong please show me and correct me ..........your byist to LED is showing

tech is tech...........learn and use or stay a step behide (just fun fact com grows with HID lightings are only running the bulbs 50% of the time some even less and replacing them ......sell alot of the old bulbs to ppl like us)

here is the link u should start with before u call anyone a 10 year old ................i read more in a day then most ppl do in a week and it is all how tos and subject matters that i need to learn fo some project i am doing

No idea how you came to that conclusion LOL. I said [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]1000 pounds GBP, so roughly 1200 euros.

There's been a massive change in plans, I ordered all the timber, hardboard, insulation needed to create a room inside my room. Now a few days after ordering it looks like we're not going to have this tenancy much longer. So building the room just to take it down in 3 months would be a bit stupid, I'll just take the materials with me to our next house (which will be out in the countryside miles from neighbours :D ).

For now i do NEED to get at least one grow done before we move as i desperately need the cash so i've just ordered a LAB160 tent and will be growing 20 autoflowers purely for the short harvest time they have which is going to be crucial to me. I will be running a vertical stadium setup so as to maximize the space and lights.

Setup will be as follows:

-3 stadium style shelves with 3 plants a shelf and going to try squeeze another two in somewhere, dunno where yet, will see when the tent arrives.
-Two 600w Sunmaster bulbs and Maxibright ballasts hung vertically with no reflectors so as to utilise 360 degrees of the light across the V shape canopy.
-Vision AK49 auto seeds planted into 11L square pots. 75% coco coir, 25% perlite.

I need help with working out extraction, I have 95ft3 of air to replace. I can't for the life of me figure out what size of fan I will need to replace the air sufficiently at a maximum of every 5 minutes. No intake as it will be passive. As for routing the exhaust it will be run through a hole in the bedroom wall and dispersed into a walk in closet which in turn will heat my living room with the door left ajar (no more running expensive electric heaters to keep warm in these cold months :).

Really need help with this one as i want to order parts in ASAP. Cheers.

If you do use CFLs for side lighting you are going to have to keep the lights pretty close to the plant as they have a pretty low light penetration level in distance

Yeah ditching the CFL's altogether dude. Bit of a waste of electric really as has been explained. :)

As an LED user I can state outright penetration is my biggest complaint. Even a lumigrow lacks the pen of an HID. But the tuning of wavelengths of light and power savings and no worrying about heat makes me a fan personally. Makes some awesome sticky dense colas. But the popcorn sucks ....as all popcorn sucks.
