Moisture meter having "Issues"

I think my moisture meter is having "issues"
The one I bought is just one of those el-cheapo $5 Wal-Mart ones, usually does a pretty good idea f giving me a rough estimate if I dont feel like lifting the bucket.
But lately it has been doing something odd, when I push the probe end into the soil it reads wet, not pinned on the wet side just very wet.
If I go down another few inches it drops right down to dry.
I know the soil is dry because I stuck my finger down there and its cool but definately not moist.

Im almost thinking that the rootball or something is causing this thing to act up, anyone have any similar experiences?

usually about 1/3 a gallon every 3-4 days.
This time though I hosed the piss out of them because they were so dry.

well how big are the pots and when you hosed the shit out of them did the meter say it was wet at the bottom of the pot? how old are your plants? are the roots reaching the bottom yet?
