You have 2 options here..1 being soil this will require you to keep up with the maintenance and water when nesecary some find this easier. or you could go with a hydro set up using hydroton, the initial setup is abit of a bummer but once it's setup you don't have to even enter the room for 7 days. it's all up to what fits your lifestyle

Save your money, just get some good quality potting soil like Sta-Green at Lowes and grow for it.... Spend your money on lighting and timers...you already know the CFL's work fine... jmo

I would take the next step and invest in a HID light, there are some good starter kits out there for reasonable prices. Also, get a PH kit and check your water often. Finally, I'd invest in Fox Farm nutes, they have work fantastic and a $16 bottle will last you through many grows. Good luck!

If you want cheap and easy with killer results... look into Super Soil. Once you make the amended soil its nothing but straight water from there on out. Here is a slightly cheaper version I use:

The Soil Mix:
1 Gallon Base Mix (Roots Organic)
1 Quart Perlite
1 Quart Worm Castings

Which equals 1.5 Gallons of mix.
For each Gallon of Mix these were added:
1 Tablespoon - Bone meal
1 Tablespoon - Blood meal
2 Tablespoons of the Dolomite
1 Tablespoon - Epsoma Bio-Tone Plus

Yes Home Depot carries all the major potting soils, you dont have to mix anything...Just be sure and get some good pots with drainage and youll have no problem. Miracle Grow is the expensive stuff, I usually go for the next cheaper brand and hit has a lite load of time release nutrients.
http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SearchView?catalogId=10051&storeId=10051&langId=-15&N=0&Ntt=potting+soil&Nty=1&D=potting+soil&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&s=true

Wow things are a little pricey up there, maybe its just my valueless dollars down here?
Good luck and post some pics when you get going.

right on thanks i was always under the impression that I had to use soil mixed with perlite or something so its drains better.....Im gonna be trying for 3 plants like I said earlier was wondering how many watts of cfl each plant will need roughly? I currently have

2x 30w 3000k for flower
1x23w 2700k for flower
1x 26w 6500k for veg
1x43w 6500k for veg

I already used them for my one plant left em all on just changed the hours of light it received as it went into flower but am thinking ill need a few more cfls so any input would be great

as well as would it be alright to have a divider of some sort in a rubbermaid container and be able to do 2 plants in there?
