Newbie Closet SOG

Day one: Lights are set up and ladies are settling in. 24 hour light schedule for now soon 12/12. Running 1 400 watt HPS in soil. Nutrients being used will be Miracle Grow Plant Food and molasses. I know it's not the best but cost is an issue and I think it will be a good starting point. I will only be using 1/4-1/2 strength.

For the starting line up we have GDP and Bubba Kush. Both good indica dominant strains that should do well with my SOG set up.
So far temperature has been around 88-90 and humidity in the 20-30 percent range. Heat could be doing better but we will see as night falls. I plan on running my lights at night during the 12/12 cycle and although my temp is a little high I think it's pretty good for only using 3 case fans for ventilation.

Thanks for the input. I transplanted them into larger 1 gallon containers. Those were just the containers from the collective and they were already root bound. How far should I keep the light off of these girls. Right now in the one gallon nursery bags I'm using the distance is about 18 inches. My little closet is only 20inx50inx45in (LxWxH).

Also thought it was worth mentioning that I plan on starting 6 more clones one month from now to make it propetual. The only thing I'm really missing is my own mother plant to have an ideal set up but for now I will just source my clones from the collective.

Lights were adjusted to 12 inches after a little research. I just got the light and clones today so I am still fine tuning things.

Heat has been an issue through the night. Temps ad high as 95. I'm being forced to open the closet periodically to help built up heat escape. After lowering my light yesterday it seems my exhaust vent isn't pumping out the same amount of heat now that it's above the light. The hood seems to block a lot of hot air from rising and escaping.

Can't find any conclusive information on dimming my ballast. It's adjustable and heat issues are not as big at 75 percent but I don't know what I'm losing when it's dimmed besides 100 watts of power. Do the lumens go down proportionately with the wattage? I've heard both answers and also that there is no conclusive data on the matter. Anyone with experience on the matter please feel free to chime in.
On the plus side my girls are already showing new growth. I love how fast it happens!

Humidity has been low, around 20 percent or lower. I added a cup of water to help bring that up.

I'm hoping to get these temp control issues figured out today so I can start planning my switch to 12/12.

Why not just leave it open at night, honestly losing a little light is better than burning shit down. And it is the cheapest solution.

I realized today that I've been measuring my temp incorrectly. It's been placed directly under the light and the reading is being messed with by radiant heat. Not to mention it's black so it absorbs a lot of heat. I've moved the thermometer to right next to the exit vent so I can get a reading of the ambient room temp. Readings have stayed at a steady 90 during daylight hours and I haven't been opening it up to vent hot air.

Looks we are on track to start 12/12 tonight/tomorrow now that some bugs have been worked out. My next set of 6 clones I'm getting in 4 weeks will go right into 12/12.

Humidity was low today, around 15-20 percent. Added a damp wash cloth to the bottom of the grow area, much more affective than a cup of water. Now I'm around 30 percent, not bad.

Get a shallow pan and put some water in it. Then put a big sponge in the pan with a fan blowing across the sponge. That will keep the humidity up. I can't imagine 15% humidity - I think I'd have nose bleeds.

Day 3 started with high temps again. Figured out its the hours when the sun is directly hitting the roof is when it's hottest. For me this happens to be the early hours of the morning until about 11am to noon. This helped me decide my light schedule since I want to avoid having the lights on during this time.

Tonight the lights go off at midnight and I will start my 12/12 cycle. The smallest plant is just over 6 inches with the tallest being around 7.5. I'm expecting the plants to about double in size. Hopefully I can get something like a half zip per plant or more. Maybe my expectations are a little high but I guess we will see as time goes on.

First night of lights off went pretty well. Night time low in the grow room was 63. I'm thinking this may be a little low. I've been so concerned with high temps I forgot to research low temps.

Plants are getting a little toasty, had to raise the light up. Hopefully this fixes the issue. Also plan on getting a better fan in there. Right now I only have one case fan hanging from a string. I will be picking something else up soon.

I can't stay below 90. Day or night, doesn't really matter if the lights are on it hits 90 and stays there. They don't seem unhappy. I know it's not perfect but we get heat waves here that hit 120 and outdoor survives just fine so I'm not worried about killing anything its just not ideal. I will be upgrading the ventilation system (more powerful fans) but I gotta make due until payday which is still a week away.

To my credit I think I could be doing worse for being an indoor virgin.
