Hey all, this is my virgin voyage and i would like some opinions please. I planted my seed in a rockwool cube 11/06 (2 days ago) and last night it was coming thru the plug (exciting to see!). My question is if it is normal for it to grow thru "folded"? Its like the seed got caught in there somewhere and is being held in place while the root is growing so it looks like a loop coming thru. NORMAL or do i need to do surgery?

stop staring at it!
Haha, Im looking at it about every 8 to 12hrs. The way i see it is i am due for a few flubs. I just have to break myself in. Im infatuated i cant stop looking! Its just a new process, never grew anything so even if it was a tomato plant i would still be curious to look because at the moment, i am experiencing something new and so far am enjoying the process of bringing something to life! As for keeping it alive thats an entirely different subject, ha!

Just don't make the same mistake so many new growers make, and don;t try to think for the plant..They'll let you know what and when they need it.

Yes i see alot of the new growth threads i read have to do with excessive watering or nute burns. Ill be giving this guy plain ole water (unless i can throw some thrive alive in) for around 2 to 3 weeks. The rockwool has surprised me with the amount of water it can retain. So im pretty much waiting for it to almost dry completely out before i give it some thirst quenching. Also should i still stick to watering from the bottom or should i water from the top til roots are established thru the bottom of the 4x4

You don't want the rockwool to become saturated.. It stays wet way too long and can cause issues with the stem rotting.

Yes I agree, i figure i will water it in 3-4 days maybe longer if it is still moist. I had 2 23w cfls about 2 inches from it and it kind of dried the top out so i moved them back about an inch or 3 and not the top seems to have drawn more water up since yesterday. Or i can just be completely delirious! That is my main concern as i did not allow it to establish roots through the plug first, i just put the plug into the 4x4 immediately, so root rot is my main concern as of now because of the constant moisture for the prolonged period.

Well i am at work now and had my wife check on it, it popped up ! But the leaves are brown on the outsides, whats up with that? 84 degrees, and i had her back the 23w cfls off some (2 at the moment) and put a fan on it to cool it off some... flub number 1....

That can be normal.. if the cube is soaked, it will prob hold sufficient water for a few days.. Wait til it feels light before you water again. After the roots have come out of the cubes, you only want water to hit the roots.. Not the cube itself.

that's funny! also, good advice - i believe this is the most critical part of the grow and most plant failure is due to overwatering. i use a small mist bottle to water the soil

just around the seedling instead of soaking the whole container. as the seedling grows, increase the watering area around the plant. it will grow roots quickly and before you know it they'll be drinking a lot. that's when watering become second nature to you. - GL

Well i got back home and the stem seems to be straightening out and the brown is gone. Maybe it was just color residue from the bean? Anyway all is well so far.

This morning, :(

This would be day 3 from planting in rockwool, imo as i pick up the cube, the rockwool feels 30-40 percent full still. Top is still moist around the sprout. Only water its had is the initial soak of the rockwool in ph 5.5 tap that sat for 24hrs

Hey, your first grow is a lot like bringing your first kid home from the hospital--you run check on the baby about every five minutes to make sure he's still breathing. EVERY first timer is hyper-vigilant. The GOOD news is, the PLANT KNOWS WHAT IT'S DOING! Trust the plant-- more first times screw up a plant by fussing over it TOO much than by not doing "enough" Your baby will be fine. Now...you said you have ONE sprout? Is one plant all yer growin? Is it a feminized seed? Man...I'd hate to see a one plant grow turn out to be a male.

I bought about 200 dollars worth of feminized from attitude. I only put one under since thus is my maiden voyage. I figured why screw up 6 or more if i dont have a green thumb just yet. So in totality, yes 1 sprout, feminized greenhouse white widiw. Im badically in the phase of trying to figure out how plants are reacting to the enviroment i have them in now. My gorilla grow tent is on the way and i just hope this gal will last til i can put her in a more stable enviroment. Shes just hanging out in the closet for now, no prep to the closet as you can see a rolling tub of baby clothes next to her, lol

Thanx for posting this, as I am on my first as well. I had a couple that were doing the same thing, and in just a day and a half, they stood up, opened up and tuned a nice shade of green :)
Patience is a virtue in this hobby m8 and is just as important as water and lights...lol

Ok fellas this is sort of an update. I plant her tap root on 11/06 and have not watered yet. Today the rockwool feels almost dry (still wet in a few spots including the bottom). So i figured today would be a good day to water. I mixed up a gallon of tap water left out for 24hrs and added abouta ml of Thrive Alive into it (b1).

Everything i have read so far indicates that i should water from the bottom up, is this correct? I have a tray with slits in it and a solid tray to hold the water. I plan on putting the cube in the slitted tray and solution in the regular tray and pretty much dunking it into the the solution. Would this be fine or should i water from the top seeing as the roots are not out the bottom of the cube yet? Thanks for the replies an
d + rep for helpful responses!
