Well I think I’m out already.. this legal market is too bonkers for me.

About a year ago (early summer 2020) when I had my first samples to take around, some friends in retail suggested my product should bring $2,400 all day long. Crunching my numbers coming into this, I “played it safe” thinking low end would be $1,500/lb so I’d have to produce X per year yada yada. First few sales I got $2,000/lb, $1,800/lb, $1,600/lb. But now it seems like I’ve gotta be under $1,200 to get any attention and they still don’t seem like that’s low enough. No I don’t think my stuff is “top” but it’s good weed that has been grown and preserved with plenty of attention and care, so to have to go below $2,000 is pretty demotivating. To go near $1,000 isn’t even worth it. Storing pounds of product in cure isn’t cool either.

I’m a one man show with no debt and I have a pretty great little operation running well and finally onto some promising phenos. Felt like I had a pretty good shot to have a long term smaller grow that focused on the legends, classics, truly medicinal lines; not the hypey, sugary, fruity stuff that changes every week.. But with the switch to Metrc, the saturation and lunacy of the market, and the fees and hurdles (which are quite reasonable, don’t get me wrong), I think the incentive to stay in is outweighed by the reasons to get out.

I felt like my situation was about as good as it could get: plenty of space, no overhead except utilities and licensing, and free reign to grow what and how I want, thinking surely my hometown stores would be proud to have my product. Not the case. They’re overstocked already. My price is too high. The THC isn’t high enough. Terp count isn’t high enough. Buds too lose. Etc etc.

Think I’ll chalk it up as just a nice big pheno hunt/seed sift/learning experience/bank acct emptier and see what I can recoup by other means.. heard that antique market is picking up

How’s the metrc switch for real tho?

We feel ya bro.... it's been really tough to move product. We've got some left over from last round (about 16 lbs.) that I just wanted out of here. So, I popped off $850 a LB to a big mover in the biz, and he said it was within his range, but won't reply back. Great bud, dense, mid THC, HIGH Terps (3.5,.3.7, and 5.1)..... but nothing. The market is out of control here, and we still have more grows going up every day. My dad flew over a small town of less than 1000 people today, and spotted 2 grow ops going up. It's damn sure discouraging. As far as METRC, we got 800 RFID tags in. Ron Durbin has filed a lawsuit against METRC and OMMA, but I guess well see how that turns out. We're gonna have our inventory loaded in my 4/30 so we're compliant, just in case.

The market is saturated. They made it too easy to set up dispensaries. And there is one of every corner competing with each other. $99 a ounce was cheap brickweed now that stuff is looking more like $5-10/gr overstock. This is a price driven market and the competition is driving the prices right into the ground. From retail to production.

My son just got almost 200K im so glad he's not investing it in the Marijuana trade.

No shit.... I'd have to think hard about selling out to Asians... but, 1.7M might get my attention. I'd move to FL, or even Italy. I don't even really smoke weed, so that part wouldn't matter that much to me.

How about some good news? I know my tiny grow isn't shit compared to you big guys. But I've got one chugging right along, one coming to the end, a couple just waking up, one starting to kick it in veg, and a few clones from the first one.
Lookin' good brother!

Yeah I’m pretty bummed about it, had a cool thing going. What a great experience though being able to grow on a pretty big scale legally for a bit. Found some phenos worth hanging on to, so I guess I’ll get my card and start my homegrow and keep doing the part I love without having to do all the stuff I don’t.

If anyone is looking for a 14,000 sqft, OMMA-ready commercial property in Eastern Oklahoma, I know a guy.

Man, there are days I wish I only had 6 plants to take care of. 14k sq ft op is large bro!... how many hands did it take to operate a grow that big?

Well the building is that big in total, I was just running about 16 lights in 5 office rooms; about 100 plants in flower at a time. I setup a nice propagation room, a veg area, a drying/curing room that stays @ 61/61, and even a separate room that could easily be setup for pollen work. This is all in like 1/4 of the building. Still a ton of open shop space with all the electric you’d ever want, 3 phase etc. Ton of potential for the right business-minded person. It was my family’s machine shop business they built and ran from the 70s-2000s. I inherited it after they passed. I just love the plant and wanted to try my hand at using the building for something, so I gave it a shot. Pretty cool time with it all, just don’t see a viable return for a one-man op in the current and foreseeable market.

Kinda what we did. I already had a metal 1400 sq ft shop that I had built in 2007, the law came around and we gutted it, and built the grow room (20x30), and then added on an office, dry room, packaging space, mother room, etc. Now the building is fully built out for growing and packaging. i had to build another 30x40 shop to house all my equipment. The market is fucking tough tho. Don't know how much longer we'll be able to hang in there, but we're gonna try our best to stay in the game. ..... even tho it'a pain in the ass, it's better than working in the corporate world.

CavanalCannabis, what strains do you prefer for medical? I started smoking this spring and am always looking for things that can calm or kill pain yet leave me functional.

... hate to be a hater, but they are killing our market. My dad flew over a small town of 1000 peeps in his Cessna yesterday, and saw 2 large hoop ops going up. Out in the wide open flat land.

That's how it is everywhere with lots of things. Big outfits can afford the regulations and just mass produce. Like Walmart, it's a meme, but everybody shops there and the local stores are suffering.
The high end guys will always have a market, but it is tough to compete with big operations otherwise.

I build cabinets for a sidejob, I specialize in things you can't get at Lowes or HD, no way I can even buy material for what they are selling it for. I would be building trash if I did.

Crazy time we’re living through fellas.. Roy, I’ll list the strains I’ve found effective for numbing/distracting from pain, but it seems to be a very fine line between effective enough for relief, yet leaving you functional. I can pretty much function on most everything to an extent, but I have a pretty solid tolerance; being in public is a different story altogether though, tolerance or not haha.

I’ve got a really nice CBD Warlock from Serious seeds that fits the bill well: very uplifting on mood and definitely seems to take the edge off the roughness of life or pain. It’s (skunk #1 x afghani) x cannatonic and out of 3 seeds, this one had the best bud structure (even though it’s still leafier than I’d like), the best smell (purple/grape, sweet, earth, root beer, licorice, orange zest), and it tested really nicely at 9.7% THC, 11.5% CBD, 1.25% terps. We knew it was great before the test. Biggest downside to this one is it grows very slow with zero stretch (which can be a positive aspect for some). FF8BEE7D-0C32-4C88-A6D8-9EC8FEC07024.jpeg

Found a really great MK Ultra from TH Seeds. Very strong structure, great bud structure, really great earthy piney smell that when smoked in a J, tastes really strong like vicks vapo rub, evergreen, menthol, with a base of smooth petrol. Very smooth delicious smoke and great in the vape too. Effects set in fast and it’s very body oriented, warm wave of comfort and relaxation is pronounced through your whole body, and it puts you in a hypnotic dreamlike euphoric state. Functionality is questionable with this one.. didn’t get this one tested but it’s all there.

Another that seems effective is OG Kush from Humboldt seed company. When it’s grown well, this one is probably my go-to all-arounder. Very balanced effects that aren’t stimulating but seem plenty functional if you don’t overdo it. Love the gassy/piney flavor; no sweetness to this one and I enjoy that. Just finicky to grow to my limited experience, but I’m keeping it and started the remaining seed from that pack. 57FC354B-11A5-46FF-AEA7-E9670BD0A67A.jpeg

Honorable mention would be White Russian from serious seeds. I can’t tell you how effective for pain it is because it just absolutely wrecks me everytime; like hangover the next day like I haven’t had since college 10 years ago (oddly enough, that was from ak47 that I got so damn baked I couldn’t go to class for 2 days!). So yeah it’s probably great for pain or sleep, but it’s almost too much for me. Functionality is very questionable with this one, but the strain is very impressive on many levels. HUGE yielder, smells loud and old-school, needs very little training, just likes plenty of N. All 4 seeds I started were probably the most uniform I’ve grown yet. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a great smoke that’ll put you down! Again, didn’t get it tested but it’s all there.

Hope this helps!

And by the way, happy 4/20 fellow okies and Cannabis enthusiasts! One year ago today I started 70 seeds for my first batch. It’s been a blast growing and learning with this venture! Looking forward to backing out of this crazy business world now tho and focusing on my home garden goals.

Idk if I’m right, but idk if I’m wrong either in saying that it seems like Oklahoma has quickly become the world’s top Cannabis producer by volume at this point. Thoughts? It’s all changing fast on us.

Hope everyone has a safe and fun 4/20!

Thanks man, I'm going to give that warlock a try. I do like OG Kush, I had some bag seed and that was one of the likely plants. I can't tell if it is for sure though. I had a ak47 preroll once, I was new and it really baked me hard.
