pH Meter Help?

Hello Guys,
I have just bought a pH meter and i am not very sure about how to use?
Can i dip it straight into the water and test the pH?
Or do i need to calibrate it first?
If so do i do this buy dipping it in the pH 4.003 or pH 6.864?
Once i dip it in there...are they the measurements the meter should read?
After i calibrate it can i test the pH of my water? or do i do this first and calibrate after?
Would really appreciate some help.
Thank you for your time.

all pens need to be calabrated. and did it not come with a how to? put new batteries in it, then test in the 7 ph solution, set it. then rinse in clean water, then cal to the ph4. set and rinse. now use it.
the ph you are after all depends on what medium you use, each is diff

mine had a tiny piss ant little screw for tuning it after i dipped it in the testing solutions, it was on the side, i just turned it till it was the same as the solution. easy

this is what i use. http://www.amazon.com/Milwaukee-Instruments-PH600-PH-Tester/dp/B000O3B52U cost me about $30 at a local hydroponic shop. with mine i have to get some ph 7 solution. a smaller bottle which should last a long time was about $10. you should calibrate before each use. i pour a small amount in bottom cap for the ph meter. then turn the screw until the ph is 7. next i simply dip into my res and make sure im at 5.8 - 6.2. if needed add some ph up or down. almost always need ph down. i never had to use ph up. they say to store the meter in ph 7 solution so i put the ph meter cap back on without dumping out the solution. it usually drys or evaporates by the next day. i check my ph almost everyday. remember most nutes are acidic and will drop you ph levels. but you want a separate solution that only drops ph and has no nutrients so you dont have to worry about your nute levels being too high.

Skiweed, how has that meter worked for you? I had one and it was a TOTAL piece of shit. It needed to be calibrated almost everyday and in the end it broke after 3 weeks of use.

ya theres been alot of complanitns wityh that model in the link and so does yours cause you shouldnt need to cal it each time you use it. and mine was told to store in ph 4 and thats what fuked it up. and nevcer re use the cal solution,. thats not how its meant to be used. toss it each time and use new stuff to be accurate. and need to rinse off after its calabrated and not just used right away or the cal solution is still on the tip and throws off the real reading

that last sentence makes no sence at all to have a separate solution that only drops the ph????

yup that meter is one of my back ups. used it for 2 years and never had any issues with it. i have both the ph1 and ph 2. the pH2 compensates for temps

Dude, you gotta specify what type of meter you are using. A cheap Hanna will have a little screw on the side to calibrate it while using the calibration solution. The Hanna combo pen is what i use and i swear by it. You need to use Hanna's 4.01 and 7.01 calibration solution and like someone said above, you calibrate the 7.01 first and then the 4.01. Or in your case, the pH 4.003 or pH 6.864. With my hanna combo pen, you hold the off button until it says cal. Dip it into the 7.01 until is says OK, quickly dip into just water, give it a lil shake off so as not to water down your 4.01 solution, then dip it into the 4.01 until it says ok. You should be good. Turn the pen off then on to normal ph setting and if you want to test it, dip it into the 7.01 solution and it should read between 6.99 to 7.03 ish.

You can save your old calibration solution, but i would recommend pouring it into a different container so as to not contaminate the fresh calibration solution. This is what i do, but only use the old used shit if your in a bind. The used 7.01 will be more accurate than the 4.01 because the 7.01 stays uncontaminated, whereas the 4.01 ends up a bit watered down from rinsing the meter with fresh water in between solutions. You should calibrate weekly, but it does get expencive, so you can always just stick the meter in the used 7.01 and see how off the meter is. It may not need calibrating for a couple months or it may need it every couple days depending on a lot of factors.

Hope this helps.

Also, go ask the guys at your local hydro store. They will be glad to help you because they will be glad to start selling you 30 dollar bottles of calibration solution haha. You could just have them calibratie for you too. I did that for like 2 months before they started giving me shit for wasting all their calibration solution...haha fuckers deserve to have their shit wasted with the fucking robbery of a markup they throw on all the products.

so far so good. it sucks having to calibrate it everyday but i can deal with it. it only goes like .1 ph off so its not too big of a deal. guess i dont really have to calibrate it everyday cause .1 off isnt really a big deal, but i do anyway. im told ph sticks arnt worth a shit.

sorry for the confusion. for the solution that only drops ph i meant PH down. the stuff for the hydro's res. not calibrating solution for the meter. you know, say your ph is too high, you add about a tsp give or take a little depending on current ph and res size.

You dontt have to calibrate every day. I calibrate every month or so I have a expensive Hannah gro-check combo ( does them all PPM, Temp, PH) I just put it in the storage solution when I'm not using it.

lol couldnt agree more .. i have had a couple of these ph digital pens over the years, they are totaly usesless, they give totaly crazy readings then they break after a few weeks of use

if you must take ph readings. i dont even bother anymore, just use the liquid ph test kits ..
i hear the more exspensive trunchion type ph meters with changeable probes actualy work but im not gonna spend all that money to find out weather thats true or not:-P

reason your thinking its off each time is a simple couple degree diff moves pH. so i bet it is right but the temp is diff each time....true readings are done at 77 degree for ph 7...unless like my meter it compensates for temps. i know those dont.
and hes still payin to much then. its under 10 bucks at any shop i used to buy at for the large bottle. i use the advanced shit right now as i find its the strongest...only need 2 to 3 drops per 25 gal rez to set mine here. and i pay 12 buck a liter for it...retail.

obviously skunk dont understand ph or nutrient uptakes, ph is the most important thing when growing for optimal nute uptake

sir your assumption is WRONG .. which makes you somewhat IGNORANT lol

i have learnt over many years of growing to experiment, observe and learn
regular pH checks are not necessary in my garden
perhaps your garden is different

now we can all read grow books. we can all read up about nutrient uptake. pH values etc etc
but how many of us have the experience to know that none of this really matters ..!
with a well maintained system good quility food and many years of experience
weather the ph is 6 or 5.5 it will make very little difference to my crop which i have observed myself

i remember people fighting over optimum ph ranges, years ago some would say 5 some 5.5 some 6 and so on, each person armed with his own "book knowledge"

this is not what they have learnt by experience it is only what they have "read" and what they are "repeating" lol :leaf:

oh no not another wannabe ed rosenthal biting at my heels

i didnt say that to belittle you dood. i work for a nute co and if you tyhink ph dont matter then i dont know what else to say but you dont understand how nutes and ph work for our best use then. observing ypour plant is a bit diff than actualy hyaving them tested in labs to see what is our best choices for growing them and what thier needs are.
and no i dont agree with most books that the wanna bee`s have written like cerventes or any others. its all old outdated info. i actualu have the oportunity to work with bio chemist and soil biologist and plant biologists...but if you wanna think they are wrong thats your choice.....who`s ignorant now
