question about sexing with clones

I have 8 plants i need to sex so Im going to cut some clones and throwem into 12/12 to see what i have. Im wondering do clones have to actually be rooted and transplanted before i put them under 12/12 to show sex ? Ive heard of people putting them in cubes or peat pots and putting them right into 12/12 but Im looking for some conformation. Also do i need to wait for alternating branches to start before I take the main top off as a clone or can i do it at any point ? Normally i would wait until they show their pre sex but Im in a semi rush.

It's best to start them off on regular florescent lights, like a shop light. When they get white roots sticking out the cubes, it's time to harden them off with the HPS or MH. Make sure you start off with the light higher than you might think then bring it down a foot each day til you are at the right height. I don't know the answer to taking the top as a clone; I'm not a big fan of that.

Potpimp is correct. Allow enough vegetation and strong roots to develop prior to flowering...it just makes sense, and it takes little time.

Personally, I always top my "first" clone. I am usually in no hurry to veg and manage to maintain a tremendous amount of "short" clones.

I've done it both ways, but I would suggest allowing at least initial development prior to topping.....again, takes little time.....be patient.
For developing alternating branches, clip alternating leaves around plant.
Topping also allows for you to experience alternating flowering patterns.

a clone will go into flower mode with no roots with 12/12 light schedual. enough to determin sex.
