Question on the curing process.

i've cured my buds in a zip lock bag that was sealed real nice and tight and stuffed inside a pop top bottle i got from a dispensary. its a half ounce container so it held a lot and it was air tight and smell proof. i put my freshly dried nugs inside and when i opened after some time the buds smelled like bud and not grass. didn't dry out either. was still the perfect crispness on the outside and tender inside. idea.

i also have seen big growers use plastic tubs like those rubbermaid ones from wal-mart. i mean how else is one going to cure a few pounds? in mason jars and open 40 plus jars each day.

also for a huge ass jar go to costco, smart and final, sams club etc and buy a gigantic jar of pickles. cost about $8 bucks and you can fit a whole pound inside.

as long as the container is air tight it should work. glass is just inert that is why its used. plastic leaches.

Curing is zip lock bags isn't the best option really.
I've heard many stories as to change in smell, taste and leaky bags.

As I've already said, I'd stick to either glass or wood.
The only problem with wood is keeping the container fully tight.

It sure looks cool, anybody have experiece from using these or stuff like it? Look nice, and kinda looks like there not see in them. So you dont gotta worry about someone seeing your jars full of those beautiful buds . I would most definitely get some.

Could I use pickel Jars to cure my buds or is that a bad idea?

I use jelly jars, spice jars, and pickle jars - depending on size. Spice jars are my samplers, the jelly is the gooey and the pickles contain the outdoor sativas.

You gotta do a real thorough job cleaning them. After munching out on a whole jar of pickles dipped in raspberry preserves I'll wash it down with a bottle of ginger(or just make beer with it, well malt liquor to be precise. I've also just emptied half the bay leaves in a brew and ziplocked the rest so I could clean out the bottle. Bay leaves, hops, and maple syrup makes an awesome beverage.) beer. They really are easy to clean if you have the right stuff, like my wire brushes I use to clean bottles. I wash them twice, rinse three times, wipe them out with a sterile paper towel, I have these chemex wipes. Set it on the desk under the fan for 10 minutes and then put the lids on. Smell in an hour - nothing means the glass is inert, good to go! Soap means you didn't rinse well enough. And cinnamon, if you used a spice bottle, means you didn't wash thoroughly enough. Scrub that brush.

If you clean them properly and they have a seal they should do fine

I use jars, but I just harvested and decided to test out the food grade vaccuum seal bags to see if the cure is the same. I like jars because it looks so damn pretty, but the bags are definitely more convienient and compact. I'll let you know in a month or so how they turn out. Only put 1/2 oz in the bags just in case it turned out shitty.

Just gotta use soap and water? Or is there something else i should be doing? They got a seal on them so they should work, just tryin to find a way to not spend money haha im cheap

I normally clean all my equipment with Isopropyl Alcohol, water and sometimes even Hydrogen Peroxide.
Just make sure you leave the equipment for a fair amount of time to let the gasses and liquids evaporate fully.

I believe soap and water can be done as well, I'm just very thorough with the cleaning ^^

How long should I have my jars air out and dry before I put in my buds when i harvest?

If you use alcohol (isopropyl or the like) I'd let them air for at least 24-48 hours to let it all evaporate.

If you used soap and water just let them sit open for 12-24 hours.

The curing process is there to remove any excess moisture there might be in your buds and thereby improve the flavour and smell.
You will be opening (burping) the jars every so often as to let out the excess moisture and humidity building up inside the jar.
You burp the jars because otherwise mold might set in.
This way you 'extract' the final amount of moisture from your bud.

This can go on for a while but once you reach a point where you are happy with your smoke and have cured it properly you can keep curing it in the jars for however long you please (without opening the jars, since the moisture levels have been taken care of by the burping and initial cure).
By that stage you just leave the buds in the jars, some people do this for years (most for months).

The improvements you'll see are huge, the flavour and smell will improve immensely

Typically, big tubs are used for very large harvests. If we're talking only a few pounds (dry), 2.5gal glass jars work beautifully. They're airtight and stocked at Target.

I'd be interested in how the vacuum bags turn out. My first thought would be they'd be good for long term storage, but I'd think for curing they'd seal in the moisture, you couldn't burp and they'd get moldy

How long should I wait in between "burps"?

I waited til they were past the burping stage, but I guess only time will tell. One thing I hate about the bags is how they squish the buds. My vaccuum sealer is a very serious machine (chamber sealer, not one of those food saver thingys) and it really does remove ALL the air. Hopefully that means there's no chance for mold either, since mold needs air to survive.

The issue with removing the bulk of the air is that the product will cure very slowly.

That depends on the buildup of moisture in your jars mate.
You'll have to take measurements (RH) and be ready to burp your jars frequently
4 times a day is the most I've seen a person do (was not properly dried and therefore moisture easily built up).
