You did know they jammed it right? We can do that! Our sig int guys kind of know what they are doing. They also chose to RECOVER the tech over the ocean (thank you jetstream) vs slamming it into the ground, breaking it into pieces and having every idiot not hit by flaming crap scrambling to grab pieces to sell on ebay.

This was actually rather difficult to accomplish. At 60K feet there is not a lot of air for a missile to maneuver with on it's control surfaces. The target had basically no IR signature and a balloon doesn't reflect radar well. I would imagine they used an inert missile to just poke a hole in it as opposed to blowing it up. If they missed with a live one it would detonate somewhere else.
