recued 3 newborn kittens today

chanice was out walking the dog today, when the dog stopped after hearing the distressed cries of some kittens. turns out they were strays whose mother abandoned them. a neighbor brought over her cat who had just got done nursing a litter of her own, but she rejected the kittens.

so chanice adopts the things. they were very cold and probably not more than a few hours away from death when she brought them home. i kept them warm in my hands while she ran around pulling the heating pad out from my clones and running to the store for weaning formula.

they are now warm, well fed, and napping together happily. we named them caviar, truffles, and camembert.

Please tell Chanice I love her and thank you and if only there were more of her kind in the world! And you be nice to her Uncle Buck! :bigjoint:

I would also like to take this chance to inform all that it is very very likely that their local shelters are desperately in Need of baby kitten Fosters! ;-)

I'm not a cat person but this is awesome
You could use some good karma with Napoleon Dynamite lurking in your neighborhood

I once adopted a kitten too that i found in the street but i gave her away after 2 years. I cant wait till i move to a big house out in the country so i can get a bunch of crazy animals too like chickens and pigs and stuff.

I don't know what to say that hasn't been already. Thank you for doing good on this cold rock we share. No matter what happens you will remember that you did the right thing, and it will always bring a smile to your face.

R.I.P. Caviar. Your time with us was far too short.

man, emotional and mental trauma wears on the body far worse than any physical trauma ever does. i feel like i've been run over by a truck.

the remaining two kittens are still woefully underweight, but have gained about 7 grams a piece since yesterday, they are now 2.3 and 2.5 ounces and are crying for food way more often than yesterday. we added some pedialite to their feeding for electrolytes, too (on the advice of our neighbor).

i am just a nervous wreck now that the fragility of their condition has been made apparent by caviar's passing. constant worry.

I feel like there's potential for a sad, yet uplifting and heartwarming Hollywood blockbuster in the making here. Three young kittens, orphaned tragically when their mother dies. On the brink of death, they're found by Buck's wife, and brought home and raised by Buck and his wife. More tragedy strikes as Caviar passes away unexpectedly. The stress wears on Buck and Chanice's relationship. When all hope seems lost, something miraculous starts to happen. The other two kittens suddenly become visibly healthier. They start to run around the house and play, and eventually they become normal healthy kittens. This resurgence of life rejuvenates Buck and Chanice's relationship, and in a bittersweet ending, both the kittens are adopted to a loving family. The end.

The sequeal should involve buck reuniting with his cats 20 years after he gave them away.

i hope these two live. their vital signs are all over the place. breathing rapidly on one check, slow on the next. their bowel movements are irregular. they look too red on their noses and mouths, instead of a healthy pink.

chanice is in bed and it is my job again to keep them alive throughout the night. i managed last night, but i'm uber worried tonight after caviar's passing.

camembert is great feeding, but truffles is not.

i'm just a nervous wreck about all this. especially at night when i'm in charge of their care.

really wish we had a mother cat who would nurse them like the chicken did with her chicks. humans are no replacement for a cat mama.

just had a good feeding with the pedialite and some weaning mix. managed to get them both to take a full feeding and truffles pooped and peed a whole bunch too.

i'm no expert on cat shit, but his looked unhealthy. we're both afraid that he might not make it. we both honestly thought he might be the one to pass, not caviar.

on the bright side, truffles has gained 8.4 grams in one day, going from 56 to 64.4 grams. camembert, who we both think will be the only survivor, has gone from 64 to 70 grams in one day.

only 4 and a half more hours until chanice wakes up. i hope we can keep these poor things alive. they were born severely premature from what i can tell.

i stayed up nursing until 7am and they were healthy at the hand off. around 10am, camembert started having breathing problems and his noise got more faint. wife brouoght them to the vet where they wrapped him in a warming blanket, gave him IV fluids, and hooked him up to a ventilator, but his heart stopped two hours later. epinephrine didn't bring him back.

truffles is surviving for now and received IV fluids as well. he is being nursed by chanice as we speak. i doubt he'll live though without his brothers.

so sad.
