reducing stretch in first weeks of bloom

.

I controlled the stretch in my last grow (Motivation, Serious Seeds and Gorilla Glue, Dr Greenthumb) by defoliating all of the leaves with stems on both the 1st and 21st day of flower.

I only got stretch of 2", 18" to 20"

Snipping off all those leaves takes a leap of faith, but they grow back.

There will surely be many ways of controlling stretch. The light type, I'm certain, is a large factor.

My plants are now so tall that I've had to pull them away from the HPS so stop light burn. Same plants, different light. 1st time in many crops- all blurple before.

My next lot - I'm going to put the blurples on for the flip for 10 days to 2 weeks, then, and only then, flip over to HPS. I'll report back.

vegamatrix makes a product called hard and quick, made from cold water kelp, it contains a lot of cytokynin and auxins, which are all natural PGRs that control vertical growth and turn at least some of it into bushiness. i've used it, it'll make vertical plant growth a lot slower within a day or two of using it, and if you keep using it, it'll pretty much stop vertical growth within 5 days or so. the plants get somewhat bushier, from some of the auxins getting spread all over the plant to break apical dominance. i'm thinking pretty much any fertilizer made from cold water kelp ought to do close to the same thing

I've not long past the stretch phase using 4+5k led, day and night temps were 2/3c difference 23/24c night 26/27c daytime.
At one point it was stretching 1"+ a day.

I've had considerably less stretch using hps ime it's strain related more than anything else, contrary to common believe hps can give you tight node spacing.

Stretch can be an ass, especially if you fill you ScrOG too early lol. These two pics are a week apart. Screen is now 12" below the canopy after a week lol. .ScrOG fail. GDP and Blackberry Gum were supposed to have minimal stretch as per breeder description.

Growing over a foot in a week was unexpected, especially with 45w/ft² of lm301b 14" away, at 1387umol/s (340w/2x4 tent). Nowhere to go no, with 12" left....lights slammed against the frame (driver is 5mm from cross brace). 160cm tent was a mistake.

The easiest way to stop a stretch is to keep your night temps close to your day temps. The further away, the more the stretch. So, if you run your room around 75 degrees, night temps should be 70 degrees or higher. I keep mine within 7 degrees and never get more than 1 foot (sativa's) and 6 inches with indica's.

I've tried to control stretch on my hybrid plant and have tried using a lowering the lights, making it brighter, stronger EC. Nothing seemed to be really effective. Surprisingly I got an indica northern lights atm which hardly stretched at all without even trying!
Look up "positive DIf" making your room warmer at night than day. I can't really try that because it'll increase my electricity bill by thousands.

You could also look into temperature difference for day versus night. A google for "negative DIF" brings up lots of interesting results. TLDR, you could try dropping the temperature for the first three hours of light.

We have a winner! Seriously it can make a huge difference, but unless people actually try it with the exact same plant it might be hard for them to notice the difference.

I can tell you from personal experience, it's no bro-science. I'm doing it right now. My lights just came on a few minutes ago and I'm on day 15 for that one.

I can only speak for what works for me but I supercrop and defoliate on day 1 of flower, this has helped a lot. I also place a heater in the room to maintain similar day/night temps during stretch only.

I've heard using a monosilicic acid product like PowerSi, foliar sprayed a few times during weeks 1-3 will keep stretch to a minimum.

I'll have to keep that in mind. I should be good if that's the case, but I copped 13" stretch in a week, even though the tent is always between 64-70f. Probably be screwed if I didn't control the room. It's going from 42-73 here daily ATM.

Ime keeping the day/night temps close to each other is just begging for stretchy.

Bar none every time its warm/close temps day and night I get more stretch/growth, I wouldn't expect anything else with ideal conditions round the clock after all plants grow 24hrs a day.

This is the 3rd time I've grown this strain same everything, this is the most it has ever stretched and well its the 1st summer I've flowered it.

Wrong......... this is proven. Keeping the temps close will limit stretch. You obviously have something else going on. It could be certain additives you are using, among other things. I keep a dehumidifier in the room just for this reason, and it surely limits stretch. My plants always end up less than 3 ft., even sativas.

Best way I’ve found is UV light with no IR. I add IR 3rd or 4th week into bloom. Add in some training I can run Sativas in a 5ft tent and not end up with a jungle.

Where's it proven, I'll love to see this?

Wrong. It's crazy how many people don't know about it. Are you growing from seeds?

I use both seed and clone, I don't care who says what about bedding plants, come on man bedding plants, were talking about weed.

My personal hands experience says the whole concept is bull, that might or might not be the case but it is in my experience.

It seems ridiculous, laughable that ideal conditions are suddenly going to make our plants not grow at that point of their cycle, that coupled with my personal experience says the whole notion is ridiculous

This is about reducing stretch, and there is actual science behind it. Since you need to see DIF and cannabis in the same link, here ya go. Not trying to be a dick, just trying to help people who actually want to limit stretching during the first few weeks of flower.

Yes I realise that, I'm also only sharing my personal experience I'm not trying to right.
