review before I set it up

Ok guys/gals, I am almost ready to set up my first hydro grow. It will be flood drain style consisting of 4 plants. I have a 16"x34" grow closet that I will be utilizing. Lighting will be 400w HPS. I will start off flooding once every 2 hours for 15 mins and adjust according to the roots moisture level. This is all going to be DIY when possible, to help cut down on costs. The height of my grow space is about 4-5' so I may have to cut down a little on vegging time. Also, I will be using a DIY carbon scrubber and oscillating fan. Please add/criticize where you see fit, maybe some things I haven't thought of yet.
Questions I have:
the biggest topic I am having trouble understanding is nutes, thus my questions will mostly involve nutes.
1) I was speaking with my local hydro store and they suggested adding other nutes in addition to the big three. Is this necessary? If so, which ones?
2) I have read that I should follow manufacturers directions exactly, then if I want slowly increase the dosage of my nutes. Suggestions?

1) every brand has a nutrient layout for boost and feeding.. there has not been 1 brand that didnt have it logo on it that belonged to that group of nutes. and yes these boost help alot if done correctly.
2)from personal experience i dont follow the bottle instructions i go by atleast a 1/2 or 2/3. of req.
