Roseman and purpdaddys guide for my Bubbleponics setup from Stealth Hydroponics

One of the most aggrevating things I've ever attempted was calibrating a pH meter.
Makes me want to just pee straight up!
And what makes it worst, is having two pH meters to compare results.

Let me give you a heads up about calibrating a pH meter and using it. You have to just use it as a "rule of thumb" so to speak, and use it to try to stay within range.
For those that already know and those that do not, you can put an expensive $54 super-duper pH meter in water, test it, read it, get 6.8 and take it out, stick it back in, and it will be a little different, like 6.6. Shake it around in the water, stir it in the water and you'll get a different results, like 6.4, in the exact same water. Then take it out of the water, turn it off, and put it back in the same water, turn it back on in the water, and read 6.5, blow on it and get 6.9.
Temperature of water makes a big difference in the pH of water.
Shaking and stirring the meter in the water, makes a slight difference.
Turning it on IN the water and turning it on OUT of the water, makes a slight difference.
Turning it OFF and ON in the same water, makes a difference.
Waiting three minutes yields a different reading too.

I had year old calibration solution, but it was still clear looking and smelled OK. I used it and adjusted my meter, and then I used it and adjusted my meter, and then I used it and adjusted my meter, and then I used it and adjusted my meter, and then .......well,,,that took an hour.
I would put it in the 4.0 solution, get it to read 4.0 by adjusting it, (there is a SET SCREW you turn to make it go up or down) then put it in the 6.8 solution, it would read 7.1, I 'd turn it down to make it say 6.8, then try it again in the 4.0 and it would read 3.7!

After I spent an hour, spliting the difference, going back adn forth, it was very close to accurate to the calibration solution. In 6.8, it read 6.7, and in the 4.0, it read 4.1. Sounds good enough, huh?
Then, I checked it with my old meter, and good grief! The old meter said the 4.0 was 3.5 and the 6.8 was read as 6.2.
Took another hour to get the two meters to agree within .5 difference, which is really a broad difference, but one I will accept.
AND I am not even going to compate them to the tEST STRIPs tonight, although I will later.

If you ever want to really drive someone crazy, or start them drinking early, buy them TWO pH meters, and ask them to adjust and calibrate them to perform the same.

Anyway, I got two pH meters, fairly close to reading the smae, but not really. What's a pot head to do?

The pics show my efforts.

I had the same ph meter but i got an oakton now..i hate that lil screw shit,,its too sensitive..gotta adjust it veru very easily..the oakton has a cal. button you hold after you dip in solution and automatically calibrates itself...Ph is a very important thing to me and having that right is the first step of learning hydro!

I just wanted to stop by and say thank you for all of the helpful forums and posts you (purpdaddy), and Roseman have created to help all of us newb bubbleponic growers. I have officially built my own stealth hydro system and have successfully sprouted 6 seeds in the system. Props to both of you and all you other bubbleheads out there helping the public.

Got another question.. My roots are growing around my air stone tubes in my tub and am wondering what I should do everytime I swap the reservoir with new water and nutes. Roseman, I've seen you say just cut the roots when it comes to a male and females seed's roots tangeling together but wouldn't that start to stress them after doing it every week? I can see chopping them once being ok, but continuesly?

B is for the bubbles that we grow in
U is for our understanding plants
B is for the beauty of our grow rooms
B is for the brand of nutes we have
L is for the love we give our fem plants
E is for the excitement that we feel
H is for the harvest that we want now
E is for the easy way we grow
A if for the anxiiousness of vegging
D is for the daughters that we clone
S is for the good Shit that we grow here

Put it all thogether that spells Bubbleheads and that's to only way I KNOW! Ta da!

Wow! This is some really good shit I'm smoking! LOL!

Merahoon,

It really good that your roots are giving the air stones a love hug. I put an ainstone under each plant ( use oxystones but not the flex air tubes) and by the end of the grow my airstones are covered with roots! The strong ones will not only take their airstone but go looking for more. Gotta love a greedy plant. Bigger roots = bigger plant = bigger stalks = bigger buds.

On male culling, you don't need to mess with the roots and the males indentified. Then you cut out the male and up to half of the female roots and sometimes the fem won;t even notice. In my early grows when I was using bagseed I actually got a growth spurt when I cut the males out. Might have been due to the increased light available to fems but the point being that it didn't even slow them down when I cut the fems root system by half and maybe a little more. The plant knows how to recover.

Im just "window shopping" haha. Im just seeing what it would cost do do it in the future.. Maybe..

Actually do you think that pump is too much? Do you know a better deal on a pump from a diff site?

Thank you for the replies but you guys must not have understood my question. My roots are growing around the tubes that are connected to the air stone. So if i pull the lid off, i can only get it 1 inch above the tub because the roots are holding on to the tubes. ANd those tubes are ran through holes on the tub. Does this make sense? I hope I explained myself well. Thanks again!

Any room to give the airtube some slack (push it into your holes in the res) or possiblly move your air pump a little closer to the res temporarily?

If you have any open netpot locations you can do a lot of maintenace and testing through that.

hmm.. I just realized that I will only have about 3 inches of clearance for the airstones under the net pots. The container is only 6 inches deep and the net pots are 3 inches deep so that only leaves 3 inches.. Should I get the 4 inch oxystones and lay them sideways under the net pots? Or should I go with regular the low profile, long type airstones?

My ebb and flow set-up has that kind of height restriction in it's res and they work just as well sideways as straight up. The plants will love that close up air! Blow them bubbles up her skirt!

I just got the SH 6 planter kit, i put in 4 clones ranging from 5"to 7". I used a half pack of grow nutes and a half pack of micro when i first put them in... Its been 3 days and i added the second half of nutes earlier. Ive noticed a couple of leaves have started to curl upward. Did i overfeed? I moved the lights a little higher and the water temp is like 80... Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Curl up does not mean overfed. It's usually heat related and the 80 degree water is probably the problem. Try raising the res off the floor if it is not already and aim a fan at the res for a first attempt at lowering the water temp.
