Seed lighting?!!

We told him already.. LOL

Try the portion cup method. Just like the paper towel. Take a Portion cup or Petri dish ..Place 3 layers of paper towel inside...wet it.

Place the seeds in there...and cover with lid...Ghetto version? LOL

I take one of the Hundreds of Pill bottle lids I have and just place saran wrap over and place it IN A WARM DARK PLACE. This method works better for ME! It's no different from paper towel Ziploc but the seeds perform better to me.

Plus they pop up with room to sprout leaves instead of being compressed and sticking to the paper in the Ziploc

Now Start Listening to someone here and get those seeds Germinated LOL
Last time I did the paper towel way, this time it’s seed in root riot.... that’s why I’m asking about the light.... if anything I’ll take it out the root riot Nd do the paper towel way

The only downside, though, is if it doesn't sprout you can't tell if it's a dud or just slow.
That's exactly why I say do it in the cups...you don't have to flip or unfold napkins to see if it popped or not and

You can't stop pacing back and forth trying to look into the dome or bag (with the humidity) to see if it came up from the soil

Then you pop that bad boy in tap root first into your soil with just a bit of shade (medium)

I may go back to germinating in a cup first, just to know that it's not a dud, then drop it in dirt tap-root down. It does add a couple days time to the germination process, but I'd probably lose even more than that on a dud seed, so, small price to pay for a little peace-of-mind. I think I'm with ya on this BaRabus...

If it's a dud seed, it will be a dud whether you plant direct, use rooters, or the paper towel. What difference does it make?

You're absolutely correct. Not all will germinate

If you paid for it...then wait out the 7 days (some say 10)...It could be rebuilding cell structure slowly from being dried out...Ya know

All of US..Vampire fans would know..once he has slept centuries without any blood. It takes a while of pumping blood back into him to revitalize him. lmao..I know..crazy Analogy.

FWIW - Check out this video of an experiment in different germination techniques. Like him, I have had much faster results with just planting the seed, skipping the water bath, skipping the paper towel, etc. The only downside, though, is if it doesn't sprout you can't tell if it's a dud or just slow...

I would think the time you waste waiting for slow seeds to sprout or see if they are duds would outweigh the extra day the paper towel lagged behind. The ones planted directly in soil did come up faster for him but how many days do you wait if they don't? At least with the paper towel method you know pretty quick if it is viable. That said, to each their own. Think how boring the world would be if there were only one way to do each thing.

The point, to me, is to know in a day or two that the seed is a dud, rather than staring at dirt for a week. That said, I had converted to just planting straight in dirt because it is, hands down, the fastest.

Hah totally don't want a boring world! :)

Yeah, same thing I was thinking. Even though I did the straight to soil method for speed, I would know in 24-48 hours if a seed is a dud if I soaked it first.

Soak in house temp water for 24ish hours. I like to dunk them so they sink after a couple of hours just to submerge them for most of their time soaking.

Then straight into soil and no contact at all with human hands, use a hair grip to get the seeds out the water and make a hole for them. Not shallow and not deep but deep enough for it to not get confused and grow wrong way up, also a little deeper gives it time to shake the seed husk off and raising through the soil.

Been growing decades and can't recall the last time I had a dud.

Good seeds are also a massive help instead of old stock.

Once they have broken soil I put a clear plastic pint cup over the for a day or so, 2 days max then remove the cup and they are on their own to survive. Always works for me.

In fact I've just started some seeds off last weekend, all up but the middle one is slow but they'll come. 5 outa 5 again a 100% germ rate. Cups off already and they are away, these are 2 and 3 days old.

IMG_20200826_142616.jpg

I don't mind the new ones being slow because I have these to finish first, 52 days of 12/12 ( 7 weeks and 3 days) today and nowhere near done!

This is a hectic way to germinate seeds and far far too much handling and disturbance.

It's to finicky and long winded too.

The less handling and disturbance the better. No need for a human hand to ever even touch the seed.

Tip from packaging into a cup of water, dunk them after a few hours so they sink with a straw for instance then after a 24ish hr soak gently use a clean hair grip to scoop the out one by one and place them in the holes you have made in your soil.

It's so easy, ultra effective and never ever been in touch with my hands so I know I've done my best.

Like I say, I cannot recall a dud, seriously.

That is usually the case for me, 1 or 2 days I see the very slight rise of the soil and there they are.

Perfect method.

These came up on Sunday and Monday, they all can be say 3 days old.

GOOD point... if your seeds are quality, and fresh, what are the actual odds of a dud, I wonder? All this worry and machinating over a problem that almost never happens, maybe?

Seems a bit agitated but

I forgot to tell you..Just simply use TWEEZERS so to not disturb the seed (some feel it's a must it's NOT)
But to ensure just pick it up with Tweezers as I do...geeeeeesh

Also, Since I do believe My Package has been Confiscated by the US Postal system (my cousin works for them and told me not to go pickup the package)
I am now dropping in Jerry Berry(I've been saving) into my Pill top...well I did it as of 8 am CST. SMH...Dam can't even get seeds delivered? Seriously?

I've contacted ChosenSeeds to see if they are going to reship my White Runtz and others

How long has it been? There have definitely been big delays in the USPS, lately. I sent a check to my local landscaper and it took two weeks to get across town. :wall:

Well It arrived August 18th..Scanned signed and Received from Chicago HUB
It sat there...August 23rd...It was supposedly scanned again IN Chicago? HUB
24th...It was scanned at the Houston Hub? and then went to another USPS that's NOT my location and Been there since 24th.
Saying Available for Pickup

My Cousin works with St. Louis USPS and he knows (he grows also) He simply said that if it went through Chicago's HUB and sat there for that long then it was Opened.
Don't even try to pick it up ...

Ahhh, yeah, that does sound different from the “normal” delays.

Each to their own regarding seed germination but as I said, long time growing and can't recall a dud soaking them first.

As for Chosen Seeds, what is the issue there and why contact them to reship if you failed to pick them up.

Chosen Seeds is a decent bank and the fella, Guy, who runs the show has fantastic customer service but I do feel you would be pulling a fast one if you convince to reship because of your failure to collect due to postal inside information from your cousin.

Hope not because that is just real pants

They are supposed to be Delivered LOL...NOT picked up..This is the US...It has my Address on the package.

It isn't for me to go Pick up..I never said anything bad about them but I won't go through them again if they don't RE SHIP like MANY do

Chicago HUB (just found out from my cousin and ChosenSeeds should know this as a shipper) has Customs Agents

Not all US Ports have Customs Agents...I didn't know this but now I know I had a package Confiscated back in 2009 that I couldn't track
Later I received a later from the US Post Office saying if I showed them a Prescription, then I can come and pick it up (it was supposed to be delivered)
I contacted the company. They said NO PROBLEM. We used that Port cause it ships fast. We will reship once more at another port but it will take a bit longer to get to you.

Bam...Got my package.

So as a Seller and shipper you should know which ports are Goverened and those that aren't. That being said, if he doesn't I just won't return to him. Simple. I will go to those who PROMISE shipping and not OH well Our gain your Lost.

Update: ChosenSeeds says this is the Normal route cause the 1st Hub will confiscate it and send me a Empty package.
I hope so. I will wait for it. I don't understand how It didn't just come straight to my home.

Listen to you. What total and utter BS that the seed Co would know if Chicago has customs agents. WTF!

Should Chosen Seeds know every single worldwide ports customs status... you really think?

It's is not the fault of Chosen Seeds that you never got your item, it's the US postal service who rightly did as they are instructed to seize all what they see fit.

It's your issue now and it should be you who deals with the postal issue. The seedbanks have done everything they could do.

Regardless if it had your address on it, the shipment has been intersepted and you have been fully alerted to this by your postal worker cousin.

Be careful not to mention your cousin though, I doubt they will agree if his policy that is likely to go against the law by dishing out insider information and actively protecting law breakers.

Sorry but I do not agree that you think the seeds should be reshipped. You are playing a game with the poor owner who has done fuck all wrong.

You were aware of the pitfalls before ordering and your stunt for so more seeds after they was on to you is lowly and out of order.

You must be very desparate and lacking on many fronts. Hope things pick up for you.

I'm Sory but no need to con vendors regardless if "MANY" reship. It's a service not a piss take and says a lot about character.

Anyway, if I was Guy I'd tell you to take a trip to the Post office like any normal person instead of playing the victim.
