Should I up-grade ??? - Decisions !! ........

I decided the 6" install should stay but have upstaged my 6" In-line fan for an 8" In-line fan with a much higher CFM rating :) - STELTHY :leaf:
I see your logic, unfortunately it won't work that way. The fan can only push as much air there is space for. That's why one matches the fan to the ducting. The reducer actually will raise the airflow noise slightly due to it's increased velocity by being reduced in volume. If it were reversed so that it was a 6" fan going into an 8" duct, the noise would go down.

Also take back the speed controller. It's design will cause premature failure of your fan. You can tell because you'll hear a slight humming. Not many people know about it, you've been hipped. What you do with the info is up to you. The variac is the way to go.

I hear what your saying man! .. I was wondering a few ways to get around this and still get away with using the 8" fan.. firstly I've noticed that the side of the fan that pulls air from the grow-cab actually has a hole thats 6" with an 8" neck .. so from there back to the reflector is all 6" equipment, minus a 1" x 1" gap at the fan where the 6-8" reducer attaches to the 8" neck of the fan.. Then on the other side of the fan (side blowing to carbon filter) there's obviously an 8" hole but with an 8" neck.. at the moment there will be a reducer attached going 8" to 6" then a 6" Carbon Filter... (I can see this is where the noise would build up as you said) ... BUT! if I only used the 6" carbon filter temporarily, until I can get an 8" Carbon Filter (doing away with the reducer on the blowing side) then surly the noise would then be reduced, as opposed to the way its set up now ??

I only plan to use the cheapy plastic speed controller until I can find a nice UK version of the US Variac you showed me for a reasonable price.. (kinda low on funds at the moment) lol, I am hoping my theory on the install is going to stand up :)

I think if all components from the left (sucking side) ie/ 6" Reflector > 6" Elbow > 6" Ducting > 6" Elbow > and then 6" to 8" Reducer up to the sucking side of the 8" fan - also a 6" hole (with an 8" neck) with a 1x1" ring gap around the inner part of the neck where it connects this whole side is virtually all 6".

If I then on the right (Blowing side) the exhaust hole is 8" - connected straight into a NEW 8" carbon filter ie/ 8" In-line fan > 8" Carbon Filter.... I cant see there being a problem with noise.. especially when I get a Variac :)

But with the 8" fan blowing through an 8" to 6" reducer and into a 6" Carbon filter.. (as it will be for now) I can see this is where the noise will occur!, I can put up with that for a couple of weeks...at least until I have paid the Hydro Store for the 8" fan etc etc... then I will get a new 8" Carbon Filter and that should (should) eradicate the noise problem... Phew! .. Sorry if I rambled on a bit there lol...just had my 1st joint of the day and am pretty spacey lol :)

What do you think of my theory ?? when I think about it I cant see a problem though (with a new larger carbon filter + 8" duct hole) - STELTHY :leaf:

Your right. Having it setup that way with the 8" carbon filter will reduce noise. It's a bit overkill, but I've done that when it comes to noise or smell.

EXCELLENT :) !! Cos I've just installed it and my god it was effort! Trying to get everything to fit was a frikkin nightmare :) Had to jig-saw more height, hacksaw re-ducers to make them smaller/bigger etc.. do away with connectors and duct-taped heavily instead, then I cut myself..burnt my hand on a hot drill bit had a doob, forgot to eat.. and it took 6 hrs lol - epic! I am about to upload pics.. I'll post some shortly.. I am glad I managed to do it all whilst my plant was sleeping .. not long now till lights come back on so I am very happy I got it all done on time.

Something strange though, your right that shitty dimmer switch does make the fan buzz...however I plugged the in-line fan directly into the socket~ (minus the speed controller) and its quieter on full ?? than my 6" was up just half way.. lol the air flow is miles better so I am confused.. but hey... maybe I'll look around for an even more hardcore 8" in-line fan at a later date :) a new 8" Carbon Filter is defo on the cards though :) - STELTHY :leaf:

This is where I would normally use a connector, but due to lack of space.. I had to hacksaw the reducer in several place on both sides to make everything fit :)

I then had to hacksaw the other side to fit OVER the 6" Elbow..in away its shortening the ducting so thats a good thing...I think! lol :)

Lol after all that I forgot to snap a pic with the Carbon Filter attached :( it was a very tight fit, but I made it work :) - STELTHY :leaf:

I look forward to settling my bill at the Hydro Store, I'll then get the new 8" RHINO Carbon Filter, more still to come :) - STELTHY :leaf:

I have already began looking into getting an even more powerful In-Line fan with an even higher CFM.. So far I've only seen a few like the one below eg/ :-

Vent Axia ACP200-12A
[ACP200]£264.35

http://www.justfans.co.uk/vent-axia-acp20012a-p-701.html

ACP In-line Duct Fans - ACP200
Powerflow models provide a compact yet versatile range designed with the installer in mind, combining the acoustic benefits of a tough plastic casing with the pressure characteristics of a centrifugal fan. A range of eight models from 100 to 315mm dia. duct sizes. The 300mm dia. model has been specifically developed for use with rigid ductwork. Air volumes from 0.059m³/s to 0.42m³/s at free air and capable of pressure development up to 550 Pa.

If anyone knows of an Ultra Powerful 8" IN-LINE FAN that has a higher CFM reading than 800 please let me know and if you can add pics/LINK's etc I'll give REP! for the best results :) I'll keep looking too :) - STELTHY :leaf:

wvk 200mm 8 inch turbo fan 1088 m3/hour

Our wvk Turboflow In Line Fan range our powerful, robust and designed to work with carbon filters. The unique design of centrifugal fan with gaters increases the wvk Turboflow ability to handle the large resistances carbon filters develop.

100, 125 & 150, 200, 250 & 315mm diameter sizes available.
High pressure centrifugal impeller.
Mounting bracket included (may differ from size to size).
External rotor motor with thermal overload protection.
Flying powerlead to connect to UK plug, speed or environment controller.

The only thing I am curious about though is its price... it seems pretty cheap at only :- £63.99
and with shipping = £6.99
Total = £70.98

Has anyone used this one or can anyone suggest an equally powerful - if not more powerful In-Line fan of superior quality, Please let me know - STELTHY :leaf:

Wow, the Variacs are really a lot different in the UK than here in the States. This is the closest thing I can find to a US version. It at a place called Claude Lyons in London: UK Variac. Let me know if you have any more questions. Good luck.
On that Link to the UK version.. can you tell me which one I'd need from the chart ?? I would only be running a single 8" In-Line Fan through it.. But there seems like a lot to choose between :) - STELTHY :leaf:
