So how would you react?

I have been attending a local Apostolic Church for almost 2 years now.

Before services members of the Church will talk and get to know each other and about 2 years ago I started talking to this older man (he's in his late 60's me in my 40's) We had many similar situations with chronic pain and narcotic use. He came across very smart and new a ton about current and past events.. We were talking about certain military exercises and he tells me that he was part of the Pre NSA... would not specify and name or agency just kinda left it at that...

it was not an issue as I grew up with this mentality from my dad (crypto tech for subs)

Cryptologic Technician (CT) is a United States Navy enlisted rating or job specialty. The CT community performs a wide range of tasks in support of the national intelligence effort, with an emphasis on cryptology and signal intelligence related products.
Most CT personnel are required to obtain and maintain security clearances. Due to the highly classified work environment, it is not always possible to share resources with other commands. Almost every detail surrounding the CT world from administration to operations to repair requires dedicated technicians with appropriate security clearances (this accounts for the many branches of the CT rating, i.e. CTA, CTI, CTM, CTN, CTR, CTT). The contribution of an individual CT will depend upon the branch or career area.
Members of the CT community enjoy a wide range of career and training options. Once trained, a CT might serve ashore, afloat or in an airborne capacity. (It is rare, but some have earned all three, i.e. dolphins, wings and swords over the course of a career.) A CT can expect overseas assignments of lengthy duration.

anyhow this guy really hits many of the points and ideas I had come to believe. knowing way too much to just be making crap up.. after about 1 1/2 years of talking to this guy and hearing some really odd things.. I am told by a few others who really know him better that he is bipolar and many of the things he said has not happened... now I knew he was kinda odd... (but I kinda feel if you get to know anyone's ideas and believes everyone is gonna be odd) I knew he is on some heavy meds (as was I) but never got the lied to feeling from him.

Now each time I see him it's kinda odd.. we still talk but it's not as interesting...
obviously I am not gonna just shine this guy on.. but I am not sure what way to go with him now..
I know nothing about bipolar and even helped this guy with some MMJ to see if he would leave some of his other meds

The most intelligent people are often theist mentally skewed, and being involved in operations surrounded by an air of paranoia and looking for patterns in things that may or not be there. There is a very fine line between genius and insanity. Often to iChat tell the off defence between the ramblings of a government scientist and someone with the delusion of being one.

Looks like this guy looses touch here and there but is stil a nice guy. Humor him if you have to- I know it's awkward, but us smart, bipolar people can get lonely which makes the problem worse... Don't cut him off :( Bipolar disorder involves long stretches of alternating elevated or depressed states, which doesn't render someone's thoughts 'invalid'. Sound alike someone heard a label and tried to scare you off with it becaus sit had 'disorder' at the end.

Ejoy being in the church :) Maybe you'll. Branch out and find other people to share the task of friendship with this guy of his quirks proved mentally exhausting to interpret or tolerate x

Yeah I cant find myself being a jerk to anyone.. we all have bad days we all have issues..

I know this guy is former Military (us navy) has the local air station decals on his window and gets VA ins coverage.
I wont humor him as I would not want someone doing it to me... We still talk and will talk again here in a few hours. He does go thru a period of withdrawing from the Church and will miss a week here or there due to it.

I dont think the others were attempting to warn me off him as the person who explained it to me is good friends with us both. I was speaking to one of them and mention this guys name and something he had stated that was 100% off from what he has told me in the past I was concerned with what he said and spoke to another person who had mentioned him being bipolar and not too put too much stock in some of his stories.

Love this Church.. have been to many in my day and never enjoyed any of them.. like this one... heck they even have me singing now... (not very loud but... baby steps)

Nah, dude, he's probably legit. Any time you bring up something that people can't deal with (9/11 was an inside job), they'll think you're a freakin' nut job.

I met more sick minded people in church than anywhere else . This guy may be a real guy . The fact he doesn't seem to fit in adds more credibility to him . 911 theories that go against - Islamic terrorists did it are another thing that tend to freak people out and they will shun you for your beliefs regarding these things . Many people fear truth when it doesn't make them feel safe regardless . People want to feel comfortable .

People want to feel comfortable, that's why they don't go to church. Yes you're supposed to enjoy singing and praising but it is also a sacrifice; A church where you feel NO conviction whatsoever is a dead one.

Its not about 9/11 or churches, it's about being friends with this man who has been through a lot. Save the debating and conspiracy theories for SSP forum.

Theres no debate . Just helpful advice from my experience at church . I simply commented on things the op already stated . People do want feel comfortable , gotta go with that flow or keep a lid on it or they become uncomfortable and will shun . Birds of a feather . No intent to offend anyone .

I don't fear truth ... I gravitate toward it. But I am extremely leery of something vaguely or expressly sensational being offered as truth. I have a checkit fetish. cn

many a reasons I dont go to church
I used this reason for over 40 years... granted I did not spend all 40 of them looking for a Church I would feel comfortable in. In this town of 130k I am positive we have more then 40 churches easy.. and of the 40 there are 20+ 2000+ attendance. I was a wedding photographer for about 5 years and had seen my fair share of services and met a lot of nice pastors... but each of these larger Churches gets ya lost in the shuffle...

When I have a religious question that I cant get answered I am fortunate to live 4 houses from my Pastor... A man I have lived near for the last 5 years and has never pushed anything on me... I was the one who made the confrontation to my pastor.

I refuse to go to any Church that dons itself in admiration of itself. My Church is simple we have 2 altars and a 145 seat capacity that is never more then 1/3 rd full of regular members. If my pastor was preaching wearing a solid gold cross on his neck asking for donation for the Church.. I will call him on it in private.

look for a small church that knows its members.
