Solar Flare

I just watched a Nova about the sun, and they dedicated a lot of the show to solar flares. Not too long ago, scientists had no idea why the sun rippled constantly, we now know that this is caused by sound waves. I found it very interesting that photons produced in the sun's core take over 100,000 years to make it through the sun's layers and finally launched into space. They showed how flares are produced: we can see the magnetic waves the sun produces by observing the heated plama that dances within them. The twist back and forth violently, and when the magnetic poles twist enough they cross. BOOM!!! Your solar flare is released. Ironically we had a doozy of a flare hit Earth in the 1800s that would have been disastrous if we had electricity grids and electronics back then...

It's scary to think how fragile our power infrastructure is. I live in the path of the storms that took out power to the mid-east US last week. I was lucky and didn't lose power (or my grow) but several hundred thousand people around me are still without power and do not expect it back until after July 8th. I personally know a guy who lost a plant he has been growing for a year, biggest plant I have ever seen in person. He just started flowering about 6 weeks ago. She's dead now. Thankfully he was able to clone his new TGA strains and bring them over.

I am guessing a ton of grows are dying as I write this. The stores ran out of generators, the gas stations ran out of petro, and people are fighting over the last of melting bags of ice. My father owns three generators and now some of my family is not speaking to the others because they didn't get to borrow a genny. If this is any taste of what things would be like on a global scale after a coronal mass ejection then I think my response would be to smoke up every bit of my weed and then jerk off till I die.

That's better than my idea which was, bend over and kiss my ass goodby. This approch is certainly an upgrade. :)

I wonder how big the event would need to be to really mess us up? Isn't there some kind of intensity scale?
I know we have satellites at the L5 sunward, to keep an eye out.

The Solar Flare from a few days ago was an M-class 5.6 flare. When they are on the high end of the X-class range is when everything around you electronic stops working and modern life stops as you know it. In 1859 some telegraph components actually caught fire. :fire:

First traces

The largest recorded geomagnetic perturbation, resulting presumably from a CME, coincided with the first-observed solar flare on 1 September 1859, and is now referred to as the Carrington Event and the solar storm of 1859. The flare and the associated sunspots were visible to the naked eye (both as the flare itself appearing on a projection of the sun on a screen and as an aggregate brightening of the solar disc) and the flare was independently observed by R. C. Carrington and R. Hodgson. The geomagnetic storm was observed with the recording magnetograph at Kew Gardens. The same instrument recorded a crochet, an instantaneous perturbation of the Earth's ionosphere by ionizing soft X-rays. This could not easily be understood at the time because it predated the discovery of X-rays by Röntgen and the recognition of the ionosphere by Kennelly and Heaviside.

Solar flares and EMPs. Something I've been trying to prepare for for awhile. If/when it happens I estimate about 80% of the population to die within the first 3 months.

I'm talking coast to coast loss of power with it not being restored for at least a year tho.

Take a look back at the past solar flares we have had that were capable of causing damage.. The 1859 Carrington effect... was 153 years ago knocking and burning up telegraph wires.

Scientist are saying that due to the current US drought this is also helping weaken the ozone layer above the US due to lack of mositure-water in the air allowing more of what ever is comin at us to hit the US harder.

Reports are coming from as low as TX seeing magnetic lights (aurora ) This is generally not even visible in parts of WA.

The Sun can do a ton of damage by setting off a Plasma Burst..or Solar flares. powerful enough to cause power outages for 2+ years.. This is what scares the heck outta me... Our own WONDERFUL (gag) DHS states if 1 of the main 3 power grids are hit here in the US we are not going to be able to full repair it and get power back on to those without for 2 years MIN.

You take a portion of the US who has no power see how those people react... stats show as does history it does not go well..

Increased numbers of flares are currently quite common, since the sun's standard 11-year activity cycle is ramping up toward solar maximum, which is expected in 2013. It is quite normal for there to be many flares a day during the sun's peak activity. The sun emitted a mid-level solar flare on July 19, 2012, beginning at 1:13 AM EDT and peaking at 1:58 AM. Solar flares are gigantic bursts of radiation that cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to harm humans on the ground, however, when strong enough, they can disrupt the atmosphere and degrade GPS and communications signals. The flare is classified as an M7.7 flare. This means it is weaker than the largest flares, which are classified as X-class. M-class flares can cause brief radio communications blackouts at the poles.

people are building faraday cages around their battery banks and charge controllers, so at least they will be able to shine a spot light at armageddon and sip water

regarding the solar flare peak in 2013 thats crazy timing..considering we are entering the calculated astrological "age of light"...and is it too much to believe that there are rays of energy we are unable to measure....with effects we cannot understand that will be released as well? some have prophesied the eternally-truthful energy waves of creation will be peaking during this 10,000 year age, radiating from points in the universe thru all consciousness, ascending into a new dimension.

personally I wonder why I have been so into saving the environment, organic gardening, seed saving, alternative construction, learning how the world really works, etc as just a couple years ago I was definitely not into that all for the majority of my life. I can only guess its a manifestation of human species attempting to survive.

I am getting prepared for that 1 wave that whipes just about every thing else. I am planing on making a proper storage area to protect a solar power system setup to power a entire house if possable

I know in Britain they turn on any reserve power grids to spread the load when one of those solar satallites detects a significant solar flare headed our way. In the past we wouldnt have known they were comming, at least now we get a heads up.
