He runs a mix of Canadian Peat, sand, and perlite. The soil can't have any nutes in it at all.

I'm not sure of the ratios, I will have to check with him.

Not a bad collection for an 11 year old. :)

11 years old!? The only kinda collection I had at 11 was some GJ Joes! lol, I sense the green thumb is strong with this one...

would probably take a lot of these in your grow to really make a difference in pests lol.
and you can get them in many places, i know amazon.com sells them.
 
There are some great nurseries as well as some good vendors on Ebay. If you want you can PM me and I will give you some names of some of the better vendors.

maybe if they are outdoors but they dont get fed at all if indoors. i dont have a bunch of bugs flying and crawling around my house that they can eat. you have to find them food. and my point is it would be a pain in the ass to have to go out and find bugs to feed your plant.
 
I thought I would add a few pictures and updates. My son did something pretty cool and I thought I would share it here.

Below are pictures of Byblis liniflora seed germination. These Byblis are normally germinated after a forest fire. Some folks will sow the seeds and then light a small fire on top of the pot so the smoke and heat remove the hard outer seed husk. This ends with mixed results and lower germination rates. He found out that you can soak the seeds in a 10% bleach solution and the husks will essentially melt off. He then strained them through a coffee filter and washed the seeds off and then sowed them on the soil surface. I added pictures of the process and of some of the seedlings. I just thought it was pretty dang cool.

Your kid is a progidy. I hope mine will be half as good at something as your kid is with carnivores. Think he's going to grow something else someday? What does he think of dads plants? Lol

Whoa! Those are some very nice looking plants! Apparently your son is a natural. I just HAD to say my ex had terrariums full of those plants. Toward the end of the marriage I dreamt of feeding him to them, but I digress.
 
Thank you, everyone for the kind comments. He has always loved plants and rocks.

He doesn't know about my "other" plants. He's only 11 so I keep it discreet.
 
Them plants came to this earth on an asteroid. Like Mushrooms. Way too exotic to be from Earth. Very cool.
