A friend of mine owns a few resturants & got sick of being ripped off from the employees while he wasnt there,he installed web cams & the thefy stopped,it gave me an idea.

I set up a couple at my indoor grow op,not of the rooms but other areas.

uhh, no. I was planning on setting it up while I'm growing, directly on the plants. I already know that not many, if any ppl go to my patch, it's not a high traffic area. but you never know. and I'd like to know who it was that either ripped me or compromised the security of the patch in the event it does happen.

Yeah i realize that our goals are different,i think its a kick ass idea,if some shit head kids or cops find your patch you'll know,my room is secure so all i really have to worry about is people lingering or snooping,my cameras broadcast 24/7 so i dont want anything strange on them, all it looks like if somebody looks at the broadcast is somebody watching their property.

anyone else have experience with video surveillance? Ideally my needs are a light battery operated video camera that can go for a good week stretch before replacing the batteries or running out of mem. must have a replaceable SD card, IR, and motion detector. I'm hoping I don't have to resort to hauling a car battery in every week but a motorcycle battery or smaller would be ideal. possibly even a wireless transmitter sitting away from the patch so you can check before you walk into a sting or whatever.

how do you plan on recording/saving. your gonna have a room full of tapes/discs
check out the link, unit automatically uploads the footage onto an SD card. plugin, plug out. it only records when the motion sensor is set off. no moving parts cuz it's digital so its got a low battery draw.

sounds like its just something else for someone to stumble upon and get suspicious. Green plants are easy to overlook. Electronic gear in the forrest is not so natural looking.

well you wouldn't be leaving it out in the open, in fact I'm contemplating the thought of dissassembling the unit (if and when I get it) and reconfiguring/reconstructing a new shell or outer casing for it. something along the lines of a hollowed out log or stick with the unit fabbed into it.

these units aren't big and awkward, one unit is advertising it to fit into a pack of smokes

They already make a product that's perfectly suited for this purpose - trail scouting cameras for hunters. They're small, some of them are even camouflaged, and they're designed to go weeks or even months without having to change or recharge the batteries. I'm giving serious thought to doing the same thing myself this year. Here, check out a few of the lower-cost models from one of my favorite outfitters -

One camera

Another camera!

These are just a couple of the lower-cost options, and if you really want to save a buck or two I've seen 'em go for much less than this on EBay. You could probably pick up 2 or 3 for less than a hundred dollars, if you shop carefully and aren't in any real hurry. I figure I won't really need any until later in the season, so I'll probably scoop a few up off the Bay over the next month or two.

They're pretty small... I mean really really small and you can like put them up in a tree where they won't be spotted...

I'm just saying...

Yeah, that's the problem. They're designed to be hard for animals to spot, not for humans. But really, how hard would it be to take a slab of bark, poke a hole in it, and place it over a camera that's strapped to a tree? Piece of cake, eh?

And at the same time, the more I think about the more I wonder how important perfect concealment really is. I mean, yeah, you don't want to make it glaringly obvious, but what's the worst that can happen if Leo does find your camera? What's he going to do? His picture's already on it. His options are pretty limited - either leave the camera there and the next time you visit your site you find his picture, or take the camera with him so that the next time you visit your site you find someone's been there and taken your camera? Either way, once he trips that shutter you're going to know your site's blown.

As for rippers, you might almost be better off if they do find the camera. If I were them, I'd start to wonder if you had other cameras that I hadn't found, and if my picture was on one of those cameras. Might actually work as a deterrent, looking at it that way.
