The fishing thread ( not about fish fertilizer)

You shouldn't use aluminum man. It reacts with the caustics in the cure and 'off scents' the roe. I always used Pyrex or Corningware pans to cure mine up. If there's lots of hungry fish around it may not make a difference but we were fishing for spawning salmon and steelies returning to natal waters that are not looking to feed and strike out of reflex. Drifting a roe bag in the spawning season will nail hungry predator species looking to feed on lost eggs from redds being dug but that 'off scent' will turn off same specie targets.

Just stuff I've learned from the old farts I hung out with at various fishing clubs I used to frequent. They seemed to nail more and bigger fish than everybody else. :)

Just like having sex. It's not how deep you fish, it's how you wiggle your worm!

I've never been much of a bait slinger but still have some roe cure stuff in hot pink, orange and red and used to cure up roe from any female salmon I caught and kept. Gave most of it away to buddies that like that but I mostly used spin-and-glows with homemade slinky weights of various sizes to bottom bounce for salmon in the fast water rivers I loved to fish for them. Various colours of wool looped into the bait loop then sprayed with WD-40 out-fished most of the people in the area on the rivers I fished. WD-40 works killer on pike up here too. I always have one of those tiny 2oz cans in my fishing vest and a bigger one in the tackle bag.

An old native guy I met up near Lillooet, BC at least 50 years ago told me about the best bait for sturgeon ever that kinda turned my stomach a bit. On the reserve there were a lot of stray cats and dogs so when they had litters of unwanted offspring they would bury them for a couple weeks then dig them up and use them for bait. They were catching 500+ pound sturgeon in the upper Fraser River back then and used every little bit of the fish for food etc. Gross AF but very effective.

A doubled barrelled sawed off side-by-side 12 gauge loaded with '00' buckshot was the recipe for grizzly bear encounters while out on the trapline too but a bit illegal for an old white guy like me. :D

:peace:
Not sure about where you live but use of WD-40 is highly illegal here. You can't even have a can of it in your fishing bag here. If you get caught with it, it's a $500 fine. If you get caught using it it's $1500.

Really? The highly evaporative solvents used in WD-40 dissipate into the air so fast that they don't really get into the water. WD-40 was named as the 40th attempt making a water displacement solvent. It was designed to rid a wet distributor cap and the points of water if they got wet. It's great for a quick lube but like duct tape not made for the long haul. WD means Water Displacement. Check out their website sometime for hundreds of uses.

Do they also ban outboard motors in the same places? The exhaust from those is 1000s of times worse than a spritz of WD-40. You must live in CA where everything is banned or labelled carcinogenic. lol

If it should move but won't use WD-40. If it does move but shouldn't use duct tape! If those don't work you need a bigger hammer!

Seriously tho that just seems really f'ed up unless protected waters where no outboards are allowed like the little trout lake I fish in. Outboards are just toxic to to the water as are fiberglass boats which are 100s of times more polluting than the plastics everybody freaks out about.

Was just watching a TV show about the thousand so tons per year of gear of plastic coated metal lobster and crab traps fishers are losing all along the east coast not to mention all the ghost nets just laying waste all over the world. Fuck me that a spritz of WD-40 even gets a mention in all the carnage going on out there destroying our oceans and rivers. Fuck me with a big f'n stick.

You should raise hell with your local authorities about such a stupid micro problem until they fix all the macro problems are are really the problem. I would walk around with 10oz cans of wd-40 hanging off my fishing vest at local boat launches to protest such idiocy. Not because I'm such an asshole but because I'm an asshole with a legitimate beef. :)

WD-40 is the best thing to use to free up a sticky reel so how can they make such a stupid law. It's like Texas where tehy outlaw pedal bikes because they don't use fossil fuels to make them move. ;)

I'm again so glad I'm Canadian! canadian.gif

What I know of why is it is considered a pollutant due to being a petroleum Distillate.

Due to the law I keep it far away from my fishing stuff.

But I'm also the guy who breaks down his reels once a year and cleans everything, re oils the bearings and re greases all the gears.

But the boats motors throw off enough oil to create a decent sized issue with in itself.

Some new info I was made privy to by the games warden last week that I didn't know.

I now need a boat license. Twas not the case previous years.

Always something lol.

Wd40 was just banned outright in Canada starting Jan 1
Totally illegal to use as bait or scent on bait and has been that way for as long as I can remember.
The aluminum pans were used for 3 hours to let the skeins sit in open air and toughen the outer membrane. Never had an issue with it before
Wd 40 is the worst thing to use on a reel. It is not lubricant. Specific lube for gears or a lower viscosity oil is fine. Fisherman's Grease for the gears is recommended. Def would never let wd 40 touch my reels. Ever. I would also not intentionally pollute water ways using things that are illegal to use. Protect our waters.

In Canada here we have to have a license for any kind of water craft. I did an online course for $25 a few months ago and got a couple of plastic cards. One for my wallet and one to keep at home. It's called the Pleasure Craft Operator Card and good for life.

Now I'm signed up for my basic flyer permit for drones. Don't need it for the sub-250g drone I have now but if I strap on the floats then it's overweight and legally I need that permit. Even getting the higher capacity battery for it puts it over 250g. a lot more complicated than the boating permit and I haven't started the course yet so need to get on that as it has a 90 day limit and must be 5 weeks since I registered and paid my $50.

I had no idea it was banned here. For reels I'll use WD-40 to clean any gunk out but have both ABU Garcia oil and grease for proper lubrication. Same with getting stick oscillating fans going again. Some WD to loosen the bushing then just a drop of 3-in-1 electric motor oil to get another 6 months or so out of them. Then repeat. 12" fan used to be $20 and now going for twice that.

Much ado about nothing using WD on lures. Think how much heavier oil is being pumped into the water using a 2-stroke outboard especially older ones that shoot the exhaust out the middle of the prop. Bilge water getting pumped out leaves a nice oil slick and thousands of boats from little cruisers to tramp steamers do that all the time.

I'm not saying lets go out and pollute everything and make efforts to lower our own impact by recycling plastics, paper and metal as much as I can. All these damn flyers I get in our mail end up in the recycle bins in town as do any tin cans and plastic crap. We buy our RO water and the store will give me new caps when I get it but I just reuse the old ones. I stand the jugs up in the back seat that will take 5 across it and just make sure I don't slam the brakes on during the drive home. If I could get some old Thermos plugs that would fit the jugs I'd buy some of those then wouldn't have to worry about spillage not that it's a concern.

On another note, I got my order of rod threads to finish up my fly rod and this stuff is a lot finer than I thought it would be. I've been practising with heavier thread and things were going well but OMG even with my lighted magnifying lamp I can barely see what I'm doing and it gets in the way when I have to use both hands in there. I use prescription reading glasses so I think I'm going to see what I can find on Amazon or somewhere for headset ones that will fit over the glasses that are at least 5X.

You can actually get fined for leaving oil slicks/if your motor is fd and you don't fix it. Either way, at least you know now! Whenever I go fishing I clean up the lazy googans garbage too. It's a thankless job but I feel like if everyone did a little bit it could make an impact.
Speaking of getting old... been running up and down the rock piers like a 20yr old and my legs are pissed! Lmao. Made my way down to the big river today, it's quite the trek. 300 stairs or so? All just fashioned from some old logs etc so they aren't quite spaced even. I decided to take the old trail before the stairs were put in to beat a group of fishermen who clearly weren't locals. Crushed em to the bottom and I was already fishing by the time they made it down. Still a little piss and vinegar left in these old veins but I'm sore now lmao

There's a few spots like that on the upper Chilliwack river I love to go to when I get out to BC but the best one would be like doing an Everest climb for me now. I have been sitting on my ass for the last 7 years and am terribly out of shape but working on it. Luckily I don't gain weight so only have 135lbs to deal with. Getting my little boat was a first step to getting outside and doing stuff and I've been slacking off on that. No decent rivers around to hike in search of fish like back home but at least in the boat I'll row it rather than use the electric motor. Cleaning out the shop is beginning so this winter I can get on the recumbent bike, stair stepper and hoist some weights so I hope by next spring I'll be in decent shape and have a lot more stamina. Jogging is not an option with my arthritis and bad knees and riding my mountain bike along the highway in front of the house is a bit dangerous. I got the recumbent bike a few years ago for $25 and it has programmable rides built in and works pedalling forward or back so you can work all the muscles. 2 minutes on that stair stepper unit and I'm out of breath so really have to quit smoking. The wife needs to quit too but we are both pretty stressed out with her recent med reports that looks like she has cancer of the liver tho more tests like a CAT scan need to be done before we start freaking out. Got her on RSO again for now and a good multi vitamin as she never takes any kind of stuff like that. Has problems swallowing pills.

The weather is great today and I'm torn between getting some chores done outside or going fishing. Hmmm . . .

Well first of all I hope all will work out good for your wife. Health issues can be a real downer, especially when it's someone you care about deeply. I hope it's nothing serious and she will be fine and dandy.
Ya keeping active is super important. I try my best, my job can be quite physical at times so I tend to keep fairly in shape. Better than most my age I'd say.
I couldnt imagine moving somewhere where I couldn't fish like I do. I'd likely go postal. It's one of the main things that keep me sane (wife, weed, fishing, music)
Hmmm chores or fishing..... is that really a question?! Lmao. You know my answer!

Weather never stopped us from going fishing on the rivers if fact those cold, drizzly days were great for keeping all the wannbees away. We'd have our neoprene waders and waterproof jackets on so were dry and warm all day. For steelhead in Jan and Feb up in the mountains we'd stand waist deep in the water to stay warmer. Even have nice neoprene gloves with the first two finger tips and thumb tip exposed. Guides would ice up so sometimes would spray a little WD on them before setting out but that's taboo now. No winter fishing here unluss I want to invest in a hut and ice fishing does not appeal to me one little bit. To me that's not fishing but harvesting and I rarely keep fish and the limit is one walleye a day, no pike in the lake closest to me.

I'll be taking the boat out until freeze-up and on Wednesday when we had to get the wife over to the hospital for blood tests I popped into the thrift store and scored a great waterproof jacket with removable hood that has a brim on the cap. I have two raincaots but they are just your standard plastic/rubber type ones with hoods. This jacket is a Viking Tempest II with decent pockets and an inside one with good zippers on all and even the zips under the arms for ventilation in warmer weather and cost me $5. Bet it would be well over $100 if I found it in a fishing store. Looks brand new and in perfect condition too. Says size small but fit's me nice with lots of room for a heavy sweater and my down vest when zipped up. Draw strings at the waist and bottom so with the waterproof ski pants and boots I'll toasty warm and dry tho rain isn't a big thing here. Snow is always really dry and totally unlike what is was back home.

I'm seriously thinking of using the heavier thread, just one colour to wrap the guides on with just a dab of head cement to keep them from unravelling and get that new rod out on the water before it's too late this season. At least be able to see if it works best with a 5 or 6wt line tho it is a 5wt rod. Problem is once the reel seat is on it will be hard to mount the rod to re-wrap with new thread. It has that flat spot for the reel mount to fit in so wouldn't roll smoothly on my rod wrapping unit. I'll sleep on it but if I'm quick to load up I could hit the lake yet tonight but I doubt it.

Sure no shortage of stripers where you're at eh.

Had to drive half way to the pike lake to put the wife in the hospital for tests this aft and was going to take the boat then carry on to the lake after. Good thing I didn't as the weather turned nasty and the wind would have blown my little tinny all over the place. Days of beautiful weather and I missed it. Oh well, you snooze you lose. :(

More time to work on my fly rod I guess but I need to order some magnifying headset of some kind and can't decide which. Has to be OK with my reading glasses.

Yea no shortage is correct lol. They were introduced over a hundred years ago down here. They are in fact East Coast strain of striper. Funny enough they still consider it an invasive species here to a certain extent.

It is a year around fishing ability for these guys over where I live

That's actually the set I was favouring while sitting around at the hospital waiting for her to get booked in. May be a different one tho as one like it was up to 8 or 10X. I have at least 3X with this lighted lamp but it's in the f'n way and not powerful enough. I can stick another little magnifying glass on it for about 6x but then it's so close to the work that it's impossible to do anything. I have a pair of 3.25X foldable ones that rest nicely on top of my reading glassed but again not strong enough.

Now I can't find the ones I was looking at with the phone. I think I'll just google those types and see what comes up besides Amazon ones. Seems limited and I don't mind paying a bunch more for something better. I used to be able to tie size 28 trout flies and still have a few but that'll be a reach and I don't want to fish those tiny things any more.
