i forgot to mention that. yeah, i use aluminum backed tape to light proof the containers. and i've used plain duct tape, too. thanks for filling that part in buckshot. and you can keep them in those containers for some time. i've got some moms that've been in half gal containers since march, no problems with them being "root bound".

and here's a couple pics of some bubblicious about 2 weeks from harvest. last night was the first day of the flush. 11 buds(12 until i took a test bud), i'm hoping for a half o dried. the plant is like 10" tall by the way. and i threw a hindu kush plant in the flower chamber on the 18th, so i'll be posting those buds before long.

I can't believe I just read this thread in 2 days. I also can't believe how awesome the thread was the first 80 or so pages. After that, it took a turn to the crapper. People asking the same damn question 1,000 times. People asking questions about nutrients and lights....damn, do some reading people!

thanks man. i'm on my 3rd harvest, so i'm not too far ahead of you. i wish i'd have used the lucas formula from the beginning. seems fool proof so far. do you have a journal for your grow?

the roots use it up or it gets circulated out in your next watering via the hole in the side

not much thats the beauty of it not much can go wrong. one point would be dont use too much vermiculite it holds too much moisture. i do a 1 part to 4 or 5 parts vermiculite to perlite. some growers use pure perlite but im outdoor and they dry too fast imo.

Hey all,

Just stumbled across this method and I'm considering making the switch.

I'm a DWC'r that is looking to do a scrog grow next. In researching, I found the whole hempy bucket technique. No airstone (+). No water pump eating up my electricity (+). No carrying 40 lb rez's just to change and clean them (+).

Being a dwc'r, i'm used to ridiculous root and plant growth relative to gallon size. Since water is so easily displaced, I have a good sense of rez size to plant size ratio. With hempy, i feel i am at a disadvantage here.:?

I'm gonna try 1 plant on a 2' x 2' scrog net with white rhino(400w HPS). My question is, how big a bucket do you think I would need (i.e. size root mass) for this 1 plant (GH white rhino) to fill up this screen?:dunce::?:

For those who are interested, I will be running a side by side comparison of dwc and hempy for my upcoming scrog grow to see which i prefer (i.e. results vs. work i have to put in) to compare yield and such.

I have to say, I struggle with how in god's name a 2" tall rez can support a plant when I'm used to my babies drinking over a gallon a day in dwc so i can't wait to see how this works out.

My apologies if this ? has already been covered in another post. The search thread feature hates me and i have certain time contraints that prevent me from reading throughout thiss entire (yet wonderful) thread.:o:sad:

well a 2 in tall rez in a 5 gal bucket could be near a gal plus the perlite/vermic mixture will hold a little water .. im runnin in a quart soup container and it seems its never realy been beggin for water and i water roughly every other day

its just so much easier to control hempy. soil can yield as well but only few really now how to do soil proper its the hardest to dial in.

Hempy Update:

Flowering day 23 !

The Canopy is a bit uneven today because I moved some shorter plants to the center.

But they do look nice from above :)

Ive been feeding with Lucas Formula @ 5micro / 10 Bloom per gallon. Ph'ed @ about 6

Each feeding takes a 1 and 3/4's of a gallon of nutes. I give them about a Cup per every other day.

I make up a 2 gallon batch and any extra gets sprayed on the perlite if the pots look dry.

They have a nice green color so I think I have the feeding just fine for now.

Recently I trimmed branching off the bottom for the 2nd time.

Well, I have finally made it through all the posts. I am starting the hempy style grow. I have some clones in the propagator and will be using 5 gal Homer Buckets from home depot. I used fiberglass screening for the holes and silicone sealant to glue them in place. I will be growing Dutch Passion White Widow and another unknown (but really great) Indica dominant strain that I have been growing for a couple years. I am so excited to try this. Thaks to all that have contributed to this worthy cause.

okay im sorry for skipping ahead but im only on page 68 lol long way to go, but i had a question about watering i am using GH micro and bloom. when do i start using nutes? ive seen that you use 5ml micro and 10ml bloom for veg but do i start out at like that? this is my seccond grow the first one i got steam rott in the dwc and was turned on to this by "laserbrn" and am i glad, this is amazing! im starting some G-Froce seeds and using a 400w MH and i have a 400W HPS for flowing. i hope i do as well at this as all you do
