I'd like to support writers, but it is idiotic and like pissing into a stiff breeze. How are they gonna restrict the use of AI? Writers will use it FFS and how will they know who or what wrote a script in a few years. I mean the writing they do for TV is at moron level and the three-act play has not changed in over 2,500 years, since the Greeks. It's like buggy whip makers striking over the increasing numbers of newfangled cars threatening their industry. What will happen when someone wins an academy award for best writer and then confesses during their speech that AI did it and they would like to thank the writers, of the software!

Writers, poets, visual artists and actors will all fall to AI and automation. Why pay an actor when you can create and artificial one that will be so good looking the shallow people of the planet will swoon over them and have such a compelling personality that they could sell fools anything? When you click on a video online, you don't just get a generic sales pitch, you get one customized to you specifically, it knows all your prejudices, your weaknesses and knows how to exploit them.

If corporations are persons under the law, so too are AI and if they are cognizant then they can vote and hold office! It will be like Trump on steroids and with a brain personalizing the message for maximum individual impact. The super rich will own the AIs, but that can be overlooked I'm sure since they already own many human politicians.

This sounds like it was something an AI bot would say and makes me question, is DIY a real person? :)

In 10 or 20 years an AI could convince most people to start licking their own arses like a cat. Shit Trump can nearly do that now with half of America and he has no intelligence at all, natural or artificial. It's a good thing his supporters are physically incapable of doing it and Donald has other priorities.

Generally, I'm a fan of space exploration, but the moon is closer and every asteroid imaginable has crashed into it and it has a finely powdered regolith covered surface that has been preprocessed mineral extraction to a large degree. The north and south poles have abundant water and constant sunshine for solar power in many locations. There is nothing on Mars for humans except a near 24-hour day and 1/3 earth gravity, the radiation environment there would be no better than the moon and a couple of meters of regolith would be required for habitat shielding in either place. Mars should be left to machines for now IMO and is a waste of money, there is nothing of value there and no point in sending humans on such a risky venture.

The only good I could see, is if Elon went there and stayed...

To win the race to Mars, NASA is prepared to go nuclear

Tom Costello reports from the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, where NASA is developing nuclear rockets to take humans to the Moon and beyond.

Damn tourists just won’t stay away.

Another futile measure that will be hard to enforce. Sure plenty of people walking around or sitting on a square smoking weed but by far the majority smokes indoor in a shop or on the terraces. Similar public intoxication law was already in place against drunks but is also rarely enforced, usually not until it causes another violation of the law like vandalizing.

Other EU countries legalizing pot would help, we legalized it in Canada, and nothing changed at all except the price of pot dropped, no noticeable effect on the larger society at all. If some American states didn't legalize pot, we would probably be overrun by American tourists ourselves. Here smoking anything inside a public place is illegal and I don't know why smoking inside cafes is legal there, is smoking cigarettes inside businesses legal there? Here no smoking means no smoking anything inside a building.

In the old days a coffeeshop was little more than a few non-matching tables and a counter where you buy hash/weed, and an expresso machine. Sometimes a pinball machine or more common a foosball table ( @cannabineer a “tablefootballtable” ), a tosti waffle and sometimes a pooltable. The tea or coffee was often free or just 50 guilder cents (like 20 usd cents), nowadays sometimes 4.50 in euros.

Hence the term coffeeshop, or teahouse. My favorite coffeeshops do look like old cafes (cafe here is specifically a bar, usually an old classic brown bar. In some cities, like of course Amsterdam, some coffeeshops were also a cafe, i.e. sold beer or cocktails at a separate counter. Law ended that years ago, they got the choice to become either a coffeeshop or a cafe. Given the limited number of licenses for coffeeshops that wasn’t a tough choice, owning a coffeeshops means becoming a millionaire sooner than later.

Yes same here. Restaurants, bar, schoolyards, offices etc. With one exception, coffeeshops (and on their terraces), where smoking is allowed as long as it is pure, i.e. doesn’t contain tobacco. An allround ban would be the end of coffeeshops as we know them, they’d become takeaway shops. The whole idea and purpose was always to keep the ‘users’ inside, away from the public.

Nearly everyone here smokes weed and tobacco combined. All those fat joints are at least half tobacco, bongs are for ‘kids’. So when the general (tobacco) smoking ban became effective, coffeeshops built what we called aquariums, basically a glass inner box inside the shop, a smoking area to separate customers from personnel. In 2019 the highest court ended that workaround too. Many shops have signs specifically stating no tobacco allowed (in joints). Differs a lot per shop and city on whether it’s enforced by the shop. Some offer alternatives free:

Yeah we had that a lot with the Belgians and French. Much easier now to buy quality there too but in some cities in the south here things got pretty crazy. The government tried to introduce a law prohibiting sales to non-Dutch, never really became effective nationwide (except Maastricht). Just last september Amsterdam council voted against introducing it there too.

In Austria ein Wuzeltisch. I remember wuzeln used to basically mean to fuck around. It seems to have become a bit more specific.

That could lead to interesting situations, asking someone in Austrian in an après-ski bar if he/she is up for some wuzeln. We did not fuck around on those tables though, it was sports for us, high af but sports. I worked in a shop for a couple of years where they had my still favorite white Deutscher Meister so I got more than average playtime. Only people who could consistently beat me literally came straight out of prison. Good times.

Fuck around not in the sexual sense; rather engage in activities more diverting than productive. Herumwuzeln.

I have faint memories of north-Teutons taking tablefootball quite seriously. Those Prussians always were at their tactical best in flat country.

An artificial brain for the thinking impaired and Elon's neuroimplants should work well with it! I wonder when people posting here will have AI generated paragraphs based on the word duh, or just their forehead hitting the keyboard...

Maybe with Elon's neuro link combined with this gizmo they can fix the brains of republicans and zap them when they have evil feelings, it won't work with evil thoughts on most of them because they don't get that far in their limited mental processes, so the electrodes will need to go deep into the lizard brain stem.

The ultimate AI challenge: " Make a magat sound smart and come up with rational arguments"!

There is an article on Live Science about a piranha attack on resort bathers. It included the following excerpt; emphasis mine.

The attack in Tarumã-Açu could have been triggered by a single piranha mistaking a foot for food,

From this, the simplest conclusion is that piranha are at best indifferent spellers.
