There is some evidence that WI's voter ID laws depressed turnout of Democrats. It's another barrier to students and although I don't understand why, voter ID laws tend to suppress black votes.

Voter ID very much suppresses the votes of the elderly. Many were born in rural areas and lost the birth certificates years ago and the issuer is either gone or records were lost. It can be hard to prove you were born in a place that doesn't exist anymore or has itself lost records (hospital, home, city hall records, etc).
They also aren't mobile or very wealthy so getting documents replaced is a daunting task.
