Are the backlogs coming from red states? There's a new sheriff in town at the CDC and perhaps some were hiding numbers for political purposes.

I sure would like to see Kevin McCarthy squirm on the stand!

Dems weigh witness question as new details about Trump’s conduct revealed
If no witnesses are called, the trial on Saturday will move to closing arguments.

The House Democrats prosecuting Donald Trump for inciting the Jan. 6 insurrection are on the cusp of a major decision: whether to call witnesses to bolster their case.

Though many Senate Democrats have indicated they don’t believe witnesses are necessary to prove that Trump incited the deadly riots that overran the Capitol, new developments have hinted at startling details that could be unearthed if the Senate trial pauses and House impeachment managers are allowed to depose several witnesses.

And a handful of Senate Republicans weighing Trump’s conviction have indicated that these details could be decisive.

In particular, the group of Senate Republicans considering conviction want to know what Trump did while the violence overtook the Capitol. Trump’s defense team has argued that he was immediately “horrified” by what unfolded and took swift action to send aid to Congress. But that account conflicts with those of Trump’s closest allies and news reports citing his top aides. And the House prosecutors have underscored that Trump did virtually nothing to quell the riots as the violence mounted.

Then, on Wednesday night, Sen. Tommy Tuberville revealed to POLITICO that he had informed Trump a little after 2 p.m. on Jan. 6 that insurrectionists had forced the evacuation of Vice President Mike Pence from the Capitol. It was the first indication of precisely when Trump was told about the danger facing Pence — and it came just minutes before Trump, who had yet to issue any public comment on the widely televised violence, tweeted an attack on Pence for his refusal to unilaterally try to overturn the 2020 election results.

Pence has not spoken publicly about that day since the incident.

Late Friday, a previously revealed anecdote took on new life when Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-Wash.) pleaded with Pence and others close to Trump to reveal what they know. Herrera Beutler, one of 10 House Republicans to vote for Trump’s impeachment, reiterated an account of a conversation that Trump had with House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy while rioters ransacked the Capitol.

Herrera Beutler said that in McCarthy’s telling, he pleaded with Trump to call off his supporters. Trump initially responded by denying they were his backers and attributing the breach to left-wing extremists. McCarthy, per Herrera Beutler, rejected Trump’s claim, to which Trump purportedly responded “I guess these people are just more angry about the election and upset than you are.”

Both Tuberville and Herrera Beutler’s anecdotes have revived the witness debate, prompting one Senate Democrat — who just hours earlier on Friday said calling witnesses would be unnecessary — to suggest pausing the trial to depose McCarthy ad Tuberville.

“One way to clear it up? Suspend trial to depose McCarthy and Tuberville under oath and get facts,” said Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.). “Ask Secret Service to produce for review comms back to White House re VP Pence safety during siege. What did Trump know, and when did he know it?”

On Saturday morning, Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) endorsed Whitehouse's call, saying his colleague "nailed it" in making the case for a trial pause.

On Saturday morning, Sen .Tim Kaine (D-Va.) described Trump’s Tuberville call as the “most shocking revelation from trial thus far.” Rather than confront the ensuing violence, Trump “asks Tuberville for help to delay—or stop—calling the election.”

Responding to these developments, a source close to the Trump legal team suggested that if Democrats pursued these witnesses, the trial would get "real ugly, real fast."

"The first two witnesses that we would call would be Nancy Pelosi and Muriel Bowser. And they can explain why they rejected additional security and national guard help," said the Trump team source.

The source added that even with this witness testimony, it would have no bearing on whether the Senate should convict Trump since the article of impeachment was about Trump's incitement of the broader insurrection — not his actions after it began. "The call for witnesses has absolutely nothing to do with the actual article of impeachment that has been filed. The article of impeachment is very specific to incitement," the source said, echoing an argument lodged by Trump attorney Mark van der Veen Friday.

Importantly, it takes a majority vote of the Senate to call witnesses, and the senators have the power to decide any limits on who should testify and what documents to request.

Republicans like Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) pressed Trump’s trial team about the Tuberville episode during a question-and-answer session on Friday, but they walked away unsatisfied with the response.

During the Clinton impeachment trial in 1999, the Senate recessed for a week while impeachment managers and attorneys deposed three witnesses. When the trial resumed, the parties had a single day to present new evidence before the trial moved to closing arguments.

If Democrats and Trump’s team opt against calling witnesses on Saturday, the trial will move immediately to closing arguments, expected to lat no more than four hours. That would set up a vote on the charge against Trump in the early afternoon.

Trump’s acquittal is the likeliest outcome, with the bulk of Senate Republicans rejecting the trial as an unconstitutional effort to punish a former president. But as many as eight Senate Republicans have signaled openness to conviction with others — including GOP Leader Mitch McConnell — remaining silent.

I see the dems want witnesses now! Looks like the trial of Trump will continue as new damning details emerge daily. Mitch signaled he wouldn't convict, perhaps he wants to hang Donald out to dry and make sure a court will convict him later. I'm still hoping for a surprise secret ballot, it would finish Donald, they would find the 17 required votes then. It's allowed too and can remain secret because of the threats and actions that have already taken place. Many in congress have expressed fear of this mob, so a secret ballot would be justified by the danger and the on going jury intimidation.

It depends on how much cover Chucky wants to give to Mitch, he would probably have 55 votes for a secret ballot if he wanted one, the threats to republican members justify it and justify that it remain secret. Donald is going down in court for the same crime in a few months anyway, there will be witnesses there too. The democrats have little to fear from witnesses, the republicans have much to fear, McCarthy will squirm in the stand under oath.

Man I really hope this trial gets out of hand.

The Democrats should just roast the Republicans, it screws Biden, but he can focus on world affairs and getting the virus under control. Mitch screwed them on the 1st impeachment and own everything Trump did since the Republicans let him off in the first place.

Trump's lawyer brought up "Russia" which might be very good time to pull out Mueller (Idk shit, but I would love to see everything come out over the next couple months).

Biden is not going to be able to break through with his agenda, and so what, let him do his job keeping the drain clear while the Democrats own the Republicans hard in 2022. These people need to be fully exposed for the con artists that they are.

The Republicans could also use this like a filibuster to derail Biden’s agenda.

I’m not convinced dragging this out will be a good thing for the country but we will see. Interesting development for sure.

Ohio and Indiana are red. But what about Cuomo ? He was hiding a lot of deaths as well.
Unlike the republicans, his side will roast him pretty hard if he fucked up badly, mistakes can be forgiven, malicious acts not so much. Most democrats who are caught in scandal are toast and end up resigning, look at what happened to Al Franken.

Outside of reconciliation Biden wasn't going to get anything through the senate (besides his appointments). And they can suspend for a couple days here and there to pass big bills. Mitch may have to agree, but that's politics.

2022 is the next chance to actually get enough seats to get anything done.

But I am not hopeful the Democrats won't just wuss out and take some political lane that leaves everyone dissatisfied. I would love to have more of the cultists exposed to the big lies Trump was selling them in a very very public forum.

Even with witnesses, this trial won't take long and if it is adjourned while they line up their ducks, then the senate can proceed to other business like confirmations. Adjourn the trial for a week and the senate can revert to regular business confirming Joe's appointments at least and perhaps covid relief. If the trial is adjourned, even more evidence and witnesses will come out, let the fuckers swing in the breeze for a spell, Chucky controls the agenda.

I may have heard wrong, but I think it is different because it is a impeachment trial that the minority leader (Mitch) has to agree to suspend to do other work.

It's in the Democrats court, so they can just push to get a quick vote that the Republicans can't hurt their chances at passing something else.

Its reality, so not sure how they are going to go or what the outcome will be. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

The Democrats don't lose either way by more than the Republicans do, but at the end of the day who are they willing to let go to get other shit done that they won't help you with anyways?

lol more they may be worried about giving up the power they have to inflict political pain on the Republicans vs using it too much.

2022 will be a referendum on Biden’s performance in regards to the economy and the virus. 20 months will come fast.

Isn’t it obvious that trump violated his oath of office and committed impeachable offences?

I don't see it that way.

Biden was the bandaid that we needed to get past Trump. A competent not corrupted politician who is known to not be a sexist/racist/anti science troll.

2022 is the referendum on the Republicans that allowed Trump to run all over our nation's laws during his presidency.

Biden doesn't get a nice clean presidency, he has to slop up the shit and ride off into the sunset. The Democrats can't get shit done outside of the reconcilliation bill and run the executive branch as well as possible.

The Democrats in 2024 get to step up and take the country into the future. It is just up to the old white man to clean up his demographics mess as they step out of total control over the ability of tens of millions of people's ability to achieve everything in life without the generational roadblocks.

They could have a secret vote, the threats and circumstances justify it and justify keeping it secret. I think a secret vote by ballot would do the job and also divide the republicans, they need to get rid of Trump more than the democrats, they just lack the guts. As I said, this is all going to end up in court soon enough and he will be found guilty there.
