The state of the GOP

Let me be clear from the get-go, I am an independent, former democrat that left the party when Clinton signed NAFTA. I thought Clinton was a fantastic president, a slut, but a fantastic president and when he signed NAFTA, he fucked democrats. I felt my party had abandoned me so I left and became a democratic leaning independent. I'm heading towards sixty and I still do not understand the GOP.

I'll just go with the most recent event of my not understanding, the South Carolina primary, Newt? Really?

I was hoping Newt would win just to extend the primary and I am delighted with the results but I sure don't comprehend them especially from South Carolina. The only way my brain comprehends the results, republicans are indeed blind to their own sins and have no moral compass or fail to really apply moral character to their own.

Nearly two-thirds of voters said they are born again or evangelical Christians, and they backed Gingrich over Romney by 2-1.


More telling, 6 in 10 said it was important that their candidate share their religious beliefs. Nearly half of such voters backed Gingrich, while only 1 in 5 chose Romney and about the same number picked Santorum.

I see exactly what I saw four years ago, the GOP does not want a Mormon as their nominee, religion rearing it's ugly side by discrimination and even more appalling is the fact that the supposed sanctity of marriage seems to mean nothing to these religious people. If it really did would they vote for a candidate on his third marriage? The GOP in my opinion has become such a party of discrimination it can't even find a candidate it can back, hence all the different winners. So where is the moral compass republicans speak of all the time?

Why do the people who thought Bill Clinton getting a BJ in the whitehouse was no big deal suddenly mortified that a guy who has cheated on his wife?

I thought we were not supposed to be interested in that stuff.

I think the assumption was that South Carolinian religious and social conservative 'values voters', particularly women, would be very 'interested in that stuff' and not be willing to back such an individual. Clearly that is a mistaken assumption.

Newt IS bringing red meat to the table. People love his zest for combat. Romney just doesn't know how to get bloody; he's used to his proxies doing the dirty work. If Rick Santorum can play him like he did when he trapped him in the debate about allowing felons to vote, is he really equipped to move forward? He's a patsy.

Newt can challenge capitalism and profit itself and conservatives have largely given him a pass. Ideology takes a back seat to folks' desire to see some blood spilled, Romney's, Obama's, it doesn't matter.

I'm not sure how Romney can prevail in Florida. He's gutshot.

As a political junkie, I can't recall another primary like it. Maybe 1968.

Yea, he bumbled along last summer with no money no message no staff. Now, somehow he has armored himself with his own infidelities through the wierding magic of the Callistabot.

I kind of want to see those three-hour Lincoln-Douglas style debates with Obama. . . . .

I think you are all seeing it wrong. Ron Paul and newt are like different sides of the same coin. The republican party is a bigger tent that the democrat party. What you see early on like this is expressions of different factions letting off steam. It's too early to be serious and they know it. But the hard right feels it is being railroaded into Romney and they don't like it. Newt is benefiting from that and getting the vote from staunch conservatives as a way of reminding the party establishment that they are not to be taken for granted. Both Paul and Newt are like what used to be called favorite son candidates. But instead of geographic favorite sons, they are ideological favorite sons.

Rest assured libruls, when the smoke clears Barack Obama will be the greatest unifying force the republican party has ever seen. The election will be a referendum on Obama and no-one else. America collectively knows it made a mistake with Obama. They gave Obama a chance and he blew it. Now they are going to give Romney a chance. If he blows it, then what the hell - Obama is young. he can come back in 2016 and challenge Romney.

you seem to forget that elections in this country are won by moderates... the types of moderates who don't like ultra-partisan hands like the ones republicans have been playing since 2010..... we'll see later this year how whoever wins for the republican party holds up in a debate against obama....

and newt's infidelity is something of a big deal because the hypocrite panders to evangelicals with talk about strong family values.... hypocrite, two-faced slimeball is what that is right there....

My problem is Newt tried to hang Clinton for the same shit he was doing. We all do dumb things in life, but dammit don't try to destroy the next man while you doing the same damn thing you calling him out for.
