Lawyer: Woman denied transplant due to pot use
Kimberly Reyes dies after HMSA declines to cover liver transplant

Taking a hit off a marijuana cigarette may cost your life -- literally.

Waimea resident Kimberly Reyes, who was diagnosed with hepatitis - in March 2008, had been told in July that she had less than 30 days to live. Her family claimed she had followed doctor's orders, but her insurance carrier, Hawaii Medical Service Association, denied the liver transplant she needed to survive because three toxicology tests showed trace amounts of cannabis in her system.

Reyes died July 27 at Hilo Medical Center, 16 months after being diagnosed. She suffered cirrhosis of the liver, chronic hepatitis - infection, and end-stage kidney disease.

"Just because someone takes a hit off of a joint doesn't mean that it should be the end of their life -- this is not a reason to deny life," said Reyes' mother

Now that really sucks.

Insurance companies will find any reason they can to deny coverage. This is one of the big problems with our current setup when profit is the top priority.

The president doesnt make laws, he signs them into law. Hopefully you'll learn this when you hit the 5th grade.
Actually, thats the way it USED to work eagle. Now the executive branch strong arms senators and congressmen into passing whatever they tell them to pass.

And just to point out, Oregon has a wonderful socialized state health care plan that they said would never resort to rationing as well. Here's a snippet from a Fox News article (yes FOX NEWS one of the only havens of true journalism left, they actually report on stories most of the other news organizations seem to just ignore):

Some terminally ill patients in Oregon who turned to their state for health care were denied treatment and offered doctor-assisted suicide instead, a proposal some experts have called a "chilling" corruption of medical ethics.

Since the spread of his prostate cancer, 53-year-old Randy Stroup of Dexter, Ore., has been in a fight for his life. Uninsured and unable to pay for expensive chemotherapy, he applied to Oregon's state-run health plan for help.

Lane Individual Practice Association (LIPA), which administers the Oregon Health Plan in Lane County, responded to Stroup's request with a letter saying the state would not cover Stroup's pricey treatment, but would pay for the cost of physician-assisted suicide.

"It dropped my chin to the floor," Stroup told FOX News. "[How could they] not pay for medication that would help my life, and yet offer to pay to end my life?"

The letter, which has been sent to other terminal patients throughout Oregon, follows guidelines established by the state legislature.

Or maybe this one about Barbara Wagner, and yeah, she's dead now. Ain't Gov'ment health care grand?

Oh and she did eventually get the medicine for free, but it was too late. Who decided to give her the very expensive medicine at no expense... the EVIL, GREEDY pharmaceutical company that makes the drug. Those dirty bastards.

What... no comment on how the IMAGINARY, NON-EXISTENT government death panel in Oregon gave dozens of american citizens the choice between a suicide pill or writhing in pain as they die a slow death. Yeah, these crazy people talking about "death panels" what a bunch of unrealistic loons, how dare they acknowledge something they can already see in practice with their own eyes. They should just read the newspapers and MSNBC or CNN, then they wouldn't be troubled with the facts. BAAAA-BAAAA

yeah well if you have a bit of knowledge then you know it not exactly what the title of the thread makes you think. My fiancee is a transplant patient (kidneys). The insurnace wont cover it if you have any illegal drug in the preoperation blood screen as it makes them liable if there is a complication resulting in death then a lawsuit is made. yeah it sucks but you can understand why with people now adays suing because they dont like the color of the sky. With hepititis also they dont really do that many transplants as it has to be afrom a voluntare as the hep will kill you anyways once you start your immune supression drugs and your other anti rejection meds. hep makes it a whole new game as there is no cure for it and if its atackinh organs your screwed. Sop its not they were like "Oh shes a pot smoker" it was more like not meeting the requirements due to the legal system. If you come in drunk for a transplant they wont do it either its just a liability issue so if you know which I assume she did she was getting a transplant then you should be 100% clean this also applied to general operations not done as an emergency room or trama bring in. If your not an immediate danger of death and tyake those tests then they may reject it before it happens then you have to proove your not a drug risk after the transplant.

Gotta love republicans fighting for these insurance companies.
Dems have run the house and senate for how long? And this liberal idiot that was voted in wants to push his agenda on health care, you think the government would have covered it? think again....maybe you should do a bit of research my friend.

He might learn alot of things in a public school, some of them could by coincidence be true. One thing he won't learn is how they are funded.
