Topping my auto's to reduce popcorn buds? :(

Hi guys, have't been here for a while, how is everyone?

I have 2 LowRyder Diesel, both at around 20 days.

My last grow: LowRyder Diesel, Auto Bomb, Critial + auto.

I had a slight budrot issue with my last grow, it was the main bud of Critical + auto.
The LowRyder Diesel was mould free, it had been LST'd without topping. But about 80% of the LRD was popcorn buds :/
Did I hit the training abit late?

My questions are:

Should I top for four main colas? Or LST?

How would I reduce the amount of popcorn buds? Should I start training earlier?

Chears for all the help guys, have had some high times because of you all :) Saafe

Are they true Auto's? or the longer photoperiod auto?

If they are longer photoperiod autos you can actually veg the auto in 24/0 and cut down to 18/6 to flower or whatever the threshold is this will give you time to train better before flower.

If they are true autos and flower under 24/0 then I advise you to use a screen instead of LST. You really want to keep the shock of training to a minimum because these things are constantly converting growth hormones to flowering hormones. A screen will allow you to move the nodes around under the light so the canopy stays even this will not shock the plant either. Once the top colas are dont you can chop them to reveal more light to whats underneath if you want and continue to flower the undercanopy as it hasnt received enough light to fully flower out and the plant will die and hollow out from the top down meaning the under canopy will still be able to continue the flowering process.

Would someone like to elaborate on the first comment please?
i've never heard of a photoperiod auto.. either a plant is an auto, or it's a photoperiod plant.. never heard of a combo of the two..

it's not suggested to top an auto as it doesn't have a veg period like a photo plant will, so it won't have time to veg after you top it to allow more growth.. so by topping an auto, you greatly reduce your yields..
it is mostly stated to let autos do their own thing..

I've grown out Diesel Ryder by The Joint Doctor multiple times.
Do not top your plants, take your scissors, aim them a few nodes lower, and lollipop your girls.
You said the problem was popcorn buds developing bud rot, so cutting off the first, and possibly the second nodes, will help eliminate that problem.
Don't worry about this trimming method lowering your yield, it will not, it will increase your yield.
By eliminating those lower branches early on, your plant will redirect that energy into the remaining branches, making fatter buds later on.
I would cut the first node off when the plant is growing out the third node.
If she looks like an especially tall plant, cut the second node off when the plant is growing out node four or five.

One other recommendation I would make, add another fan to your grow space to help increase air movement, this will also reduce your bud rot problem, as well.

Here is an outdoor Diesel Ryder I grew a couple of summers ago that benefited from the lollipop method.
Good luck.

Honestly, the high is kinda flat.
This is not to say that it sucks, it gets you to a certain point, but it leaves you wanting more.
I believe the claims of 10-14% THC, and it does make decent kief/hash, but the buds by themselves are bland.
I'm going to be using some DR F2's I made as breeding stock, pollen chucking my way to a cross with a Timewreck male.
I want to see if I can BX and IBL it enough to stabilize a more potent, and enjoyable, auto.

The popcorn buds weren't causing the mould.. the main bud from C+ was rotting.. anysways chears for your input guys I'll leave them alone :) ooh n personaly LRD is the best smoke ive grown :) an amazing taste too.

Theres actually quite a few of these ... I don't use auto's .. if you google you might find them I dunno if I can post links on rollitup .. there are also some things you can do to the plant to keep it from producing the flowering hormone... but then there are mostly autos that are infact fully auto and no matter what theyre gonna flower.

I'm glad to hear you that you enjoy the Diesel Ryder so much.
I agree that it has a great smell and taste, that's two of the reasons I want to use it in my breeding projects.

So I decided I'd LST & lollypop :) Worked a treat on one of them, hasn't worked so well on the other..

I left two of the branches slightly higher than the others (accidently), this has caused them to act as main colas with lots of branching out -.-

Will post pics in 2 mins, just need ta get at my comp :) Saafe

Mature branch from the perfectly LST'd plant :)

I thought of another possibility, do you think the seed company could have messed up a simple order of 2x the same seed?
I know that seems stupid as the seeds must come out the same jar but they are so different..

Guess I'll never truly know untill i smoke some :)

Sometimes an auto is not a full auto. It is determined by what generation of breeding that seed is in. If ts first generation then good luck they are gonna be half auto half photo. You need to find a reputable seed company with guaranteed autos. I have personally witnessed this problem with my buddies plant who thought he had autos and kept them under 18/6 the whole time and realized that only half were autos and the rest were regular. If you would like me to elaborate I can but he had to switch them all to 12/12 to get them to flower cause he only had one tent thinking autos he didn't need more than one tent.

I see :) So isit possible for the first gen seeds to be sativa dom yet another seed indica dom?

Because ive just checked my baby's and overnight the one less lst'd has grown an inch & bud sites have rose above the leaf mass completely.. still very small amounts of thin "hairs" compared to its "twin" thats starting to beef up :)

Ill try upload 2 pics but someone may need to enlarge them bcuz im on my S2 :/ saafe

Edit* also I run lights on 12/12 anyway because of a poor ventilation system -.-
So the disadvantage of it possibly being a photo seed will be waiting 10+ weeks to flower :/

I said yesterday that it was just two branches that looked like the above pic, today its all of them..
