I am now fighting daily gusty winds from the south, which always precede a blustery norther expected in a few days. It's not easy or fun to maintain 4 or more heavy colas in gusty winds. Up side is how cheap it is. There's basically no cost to growing outdoors.

Growing outdoors sounds like more of a pain in the ass than a hobby. I'll stick to indoor and enjoy upgrading my setup to perfection as the time goes on :p

i understand about the photosynthesis .. but .. In the case of "If you got less, how can you have more?"... most will agree that a plant grown on 18/6 performs better than a plant grown under 24/0... ahh but that again brings it back to photosynthesis...

My question should've been more directed at shortening the flowering time of sativas under 11/13. Do would you say this would be effective for someone with little space and/or does it really shorten flowering time?

Phew, finally finished reading all 113 pages, what a read. Also read Uncle Ben's topping techniques last week. Awesome information. Thanks to everyone that contributed to these threads. I just finished my first grow and was pleased with the results but decided to try a different approach this time around. Hoping to improve on my 6 1/2 oz per plant while retaining the quality. I have 100's of questions but I don't want to ask the same ones that have already been answered(I know you all have better things to do than answer the same question 50 times). So far I have been able to get many of my questions answered either here or on the general gardening sites, I will be sure to chime in when I have a tough question or enough experience under my belt to confidently answer someone else's.
Anyway, thank you UB(and everyone else), for the comprehensive, no BS information that you take the time to supply for those of us willing to learn.

The flowering response of a pure sativa is driven by chronological age, not the phytochrome hormone. I doubt if you have a pure sativa. In fact if you ordered from a seedbank I know you don't have a pure sativa. The exception would be The Flying Dutchman's Original Haze which I'm growing now.

I've tried the 11/13 and not seen any difference one way or another. That was on a pure sativa called Dalat Vietnamese.

IMO, the phytochrome thingie is either "on or off", not somewhere in between.

Hi uncle ben! this is your long lost brother uncle duke! lol I just wanted to say big upps for sharing the green thumb in the forums! and seriously just being reallll. You should write a book cuz I would actually buy it for support and read it for days onn! But anyways I was curious if you would consider starting a grow journal? That would be so niceeeee!

Hola! Write a book? No way jose'. Aint got the time or motivation. Best book you can read is on plant botany and culture or Mel Frank's Guide.

Hey Uncle ben.. quick question.. What are your thoughts on compost tea?! Do you use it? Cuz from what I heard and read on the forums, there are fellow gardeners who swear by it and a few who don’t see the point.

wow...what a fine tuned post with tons of info!! I have to admit that i WAS a AN user.......I just got me some of the Jacks Duo from my local nursery....I cant wait to see the results, not to mention the hunderds of $$$$$ im saving. Ive grown headband, strawberry cough, purple og, pineapple express, chocalobe, trainwreck and now sage. One of the many things I've learned was NOT to trim the fan leaves which thats what I've been doing....because thats what all my buddies said to do. I was averaging about 4 ozs per plant and it smoked good. My veg room is a 3x4 closet with 8 4' t5s......my flower room is 8x8x7 with 1000w/king cobra 8" vented hood, using pro mix bx, r/o water and so far just the jacks duo. Instead of me bothering you guys with 100s of questions, I'll keep on reading......thanks a ton to all!!!

I love growing outdoors and have done so for many years.Mother Nature will kick your butt and you need to respect her.You need to have the plants protected before she comes a calling with her mighty strength and fury.She challenges me every year and the more respect and understanding I give her,the more times I win at the game.For me,growing outdoors,under the sun,is as close to perfection as I can get and I would never have it any other way.

I have no patience or use for compost tea.

Spider mites!! Everyone will always go through a battle with spider mites.. What do you do to prevent it, and kill it?!

Also I have been reading up a lot on what you have to say and the book Marijuana Botany by Robert Connell Clarke, its great stuff!! really up my knowledge!

Screw the hype!!!

If you're not late in the game an organophosphate is your best bet like malathion. Use a spreader sticker (surfactant) with it. My favorite is a blast of water. Destroy the nest and knock the critters to the ground and you'll be mite free. They say Neem works but I would imagine you have to keep up with it and use often.
