What size pots should i use?

I use my own compost mix for all of my grows and the plants seem to grow through it very easily but I think my pots are small. I thought 2 gal pots would be big enough but after about 3-4 weeks from seed a notice ALOT of yellowing. I couldn't figure it out until I looked at the bottom of my pots and notice massive amount of roots protruding from my pots. The roots looked like they were turning brown. I quickly transplanted them outside and it fixed the problem. So what size pots should I use for my inside grow? 2 gal pots are too small for a full cycle, so I'll keep them for my clones to go into flowering right away. I have a 4.5 by 4.5 area and I think I should just go strait to 5 gal pots just to make sure it will have plenty of space. where can you purchase cheap 5 gal pots online?:wall:

My 3 gallon smartpots seem to be fine for a 3ft Tall Indoor lady.
The air pruning does a root system good.

ye you need a bigger 18 to 30 liters or 5 or 7 gallon will be more than fine, or round there, but you 100 percent its nothing else apart from root bound stress, symptoms eg yellowing of the bottom leafs or a regular basis as there sacrificed for new growth,(this tends to be more aggressive in flowering or as the plant matures , having to run low ppm/ec's, plants burning on really low ec levels, increased watering, when it happened to me in coco, it just turned me into a hydro pump on a timer 5 to 6 times a day lol. Are you noticing slightly more vertical growth, plants tend to go up rather than out when root bound or root bound sort of speak, as ive grown monster in 2 gallon pots, but suffered all the above

Are the smart pots really better than the plastic ones and if so how. Also would 5 gal smart pots be the best for my space and root system? Thanks for all the help.

ok I used to think that big pots big plants and this is true if you feed with nutes 1-2 a fortnight(soil nutes). If you feed with hydro nutes every watering 6.5ph'd ,5-7 days a week you can have 3-4 foot flowering plant in a one gallon pot. You need to water this much as pots dry daily which is ideal for health of root sytems. When roots don't have to reach for food/water they don't grow much allowing you to keep them in the small pots till the end avoiding transplant shock ,over watering, droop etc.
