Hi everyone. This thread is meant to be informative and helpful to all. Please post the BIGGEST mistake you made in your very first grow and what you did different your second grow to correct the mistake.

Looking forward to get some replies and I bet some of these will be funny!
With my first grow I got bud rot, due high humidity and no circulation during lights off.
I've corrected that by having my exhaust fan and parabolic fan running 24/7 and by installing a dehumidifier.

Found it! Nevermind!
It was originally published in like '69 but it's been revised and reprinted since. I think the last one was around 93-95. You can find the original staple bound copies on eBay from time to time.

and it's on google books as well but only partly public.

many things....wrong and lesson learned...I wish I knew upfront vs. thru errors.....

- Used simple Lowes moisture retention soil. Held moisture and weight too long for this plant.
- Over water and over nut. This and the soil caused knats.
- Used drops method for ph. Stressed plants with most large leafs dieing or dead between week 2 or 3 of flower.
- Over nuted and killed mid. flowering buds. Never can stay consistent with mixing nut. fluids per whatever. results below......

Lesson

- Keep your eye on the ball. Meaning results are the goal. Keep it in mind as you spend/invest in time min. 3 months and money caring for a plant.
- Go only with FFOF soil. It is manufactured for the purpose (airy soil and hot nuts. but not too hot) of growing this style herb...period. Most other soils hold moisture too much, attract knats and don't let the plants get a little airy dry soil a day before watering time like FFOF soil.
- Water cycles using FFOF are super easy when you go buy picking up a pot to show when the pot weights light it needs water. The key here is picking up a just watered plant noticing how heavy it weights. Never over water again causing stressed plants and knats.
- buy a digital ph. meter pool stores or ebay etc. with hanna brand start at $30. Buy the cleaning, storage and calibrate fluids for care.
- PH everything going into plants. PERIOD. Before applying after all nuts mixed. 6.2-6.5 will keep you out of trouble and plants will stay green the complete grow period. Till the end. If your fan/big leafs are dieing then your doing something wrong and the buds/flowering cycle will put out less then complete results.
- Light distance- from plants at all times. Research your light wattage for best distance. Ex. 400 watt hps start plant tops 12" inches from plant. and go down to about 24". Use booster seats to get all plant tops even with 12". Some plants may need tieing down.
- Key lesson as big as any....Forget liquid nuts. This toke time so advanced grow -I wish I knew early-....Get Sunleaves Seabird Guano (10-10-10) as the only nuts needed Period....except the FFOF soil that is hot for the first 4 weeks of life. Then you amend the soil week 4, every 4th week with the last addition of guano 4 weeks from harvest. Apply Seabird Guano a huge pinch to a 3 inch hole in 3 places in the soil made with a mid. sized sharpe pen. Make a mark at 3 inches for measuring on the sharpe pen side. Water as usaul watching super results......Good Luck.

sorry got on a roll....

Where do you get this FFOF soil? Are you talking about Fox Farm Ocean Forest organic soil?

Any Hydro store should have Fox Farm Ocean Forest.

One thing on the bud harvest time. Wait till they look done. You will notice it when you see the buds change appearance and look tired, finished and full. Never seen a problem waiting an extra day or 3 days if the buds are questionable done. People almost ALWAYS harvest earlier then they should.....All that work for 85% development of full buds/flowers. Remember these are plants that simple gardening lessons work well with. Nothing special about an almost weed type plants. Not really a hard plant to grow vs. many other types garden plants.

well lets see, built my room in the loft (only 3ft high at its highest part) so far too hot an cramped (only place i could put it), prob didnt research as much as i should have so messed up feeding schedule/amounts etc, oh an plants stretched because the light was too far away, oh and I didnt bother researching soil mixes so jus emptied a growbag into plant pots and whacked the plants into em an off we went , and got fruit flies and couldnt do anything about em for 4 days as i was practically living at the hospital because my girlfriend had complications with the last stage of her pregnancy, all in all though have learnt, moved on and now all my girls (2 human n 12 plants) are all fine and doing well lol

Not finished with first one yet but almost.
*some nute burn
*almost killed them when hose came off water pump in res (ebb&flow), but caught it in time before major damage
like others have said previously, these plants are pretty resilient.

buying your kid a cabinet - $100
buying your kid soil - $40
making your kid cut his MJ plant for getting arrested - Priceless.

My 1st problem was insufficent air flow and build up of heat, I fixed this by adding a 4" mains powered intake at the bottom, and a double filtered in-line 5" fan at the top, lowered temps to 26oC variable and also reduce smells to absolute minimal :) job done :) - STELTHY

My first grow a few years ago resulted in me chopping my female in August because I thought it 'looked ready'. I had no clue as to what I was doing until I discovered websites such as this one. Each year I learn something new.

My first grow I planted six girls. Three different kinds , two of each . Well , the girls used up the nutes at different levels and stretched differently. Playing with the lights trying to keep light as low as possible was a pain as two plants stretched fast and two stayed really bushy. Next grow ( to start on 4th of July ) I will plant all six girls the same breed.
Lol, you can raise or lower each individual pot to an even canopy also! :)
