why don't people have fur?

Neanderthals were a sub-species of homo sapien along with humans. They were not human, Neanderthals existed along side humans & inter-bred with them as well. >.<
?? uhh hehe Yes they were . Look at the evolution time line. Neanderthals and homo sapiens same time line. Intill Neanderthals disappeared which still cant be proven why.
Neanderthals were almost identical to homo sapiens except no forehead, which a lot of archeologist say that it the reason they didnt not survive. Couldn't make common sense decisions.
Thanks to differential evolution we are who we are today.
There has been many bipedal species, but im referring to the skull evidence.

its not as easy as to say.. Humans just poped into existance as Many believe. We have been here a looong time & there has been alot of interbreeding going on between the earlier humans for who knows how long.. soo yea. Modern man, is exactly that.. modern man to some extent. We do have ancestors you know, and so do they. its a long chain over a long period of time. I am sure we would consider our furthest ancestors freaky looking & not much like us

cats have fur and do a fine job of keeping themselves free of diseases.

humans invented showers and personal hygienic products . if anything evolution would create thicker fur due to the fact that we have EVOLVED to the point of being capable of maintaining such fur.

Although we have never been linked to any sub species of homo erectus/sapien despite the obvious similarities, missing link etc etc.

The first true human will be the one that satisfys what we determin as the relevant DNA sequencing for our species, all else may come close but DNA is pretty exacting in its determinations.

We have been linked to birds, monkies, fish etc etc for certain characteristics such as balance and eyes etc etc but as with evolution we cannot pinpoint things closer, one might say humans are the only beings that carry the 24 chromosomes and all other species have less.

We all have the ability to be furry but over years we have tailored and evolved our hormonal responses to different climates, surely if i gave you the right hormone you would again grow fur, we never stopped growing fur we just curtailed the hormones responsible for it.

Well, as earlier mentioned, why are elephants bald and zebras not if its for heat transfer, the loss of hair.... Well, as early humans it was our ability to run long distances, not fast, that gave us our advantage. Most animals are sprinters. We are long distance. Did you know if you are fit enough you can run down a deer and kill it with a knife? Or a rock or bone like early humans.

The loss of hair allowed us to run long distances without overheating. And sweat. As far as I know other animals dont sweat. It allowed us to stay cool and not tire out befor we caught our prey.

so why not grow it back once transportation was invented?

we rode horses. ;)

speaking of horses, .... they sweat. and they have fur. and they run fast.

zebras run further and faster than elephants yet they have more fur. makes no sense.

I dont know how close you have been to elephants but they have some hairs on thier bodies and hair at the ends of their tails. One might say a worm isnt hairy until microscopes pick up tiny hairs on its bodies. Most if not all species exhibit hair growth in some way shape form etc etc, very few are devoid of hairs of some kind, we use them for cooling and heating but some like an elephant might use them for swishing flies of its bum. Evolution evolution evolution, the hairs on my fingers and toes grew into nails over the eons, they have no heating or cooling benifits but offer great protection for my fingers.

i'm speaking of fur. thick enough to protect a human overnight without needing a blanket. it freezes here in norcal overnight, and many other parts of the world, when it's 60 degrees during the day. i can't survive freezing temps without some sort of protection. as an "advanced species" why is this?

why as a species are we not "self capable"?
because we evolved not to be.
that defies logic.

Ah great question but again we can only tolerate certain extremes before we need a coat, worms can freeze and still live due to an antifreeze that is in their blood. Had evolution gifted us with these properties they would probably be at the exspense of another feature or heriditary gene.

We didnt evolve not to be or to be but simply took the middle ground, we neither have fur nor dont have fur so we kind of get some benifits and some downsides. To say we evolved not to be is a bit harsh but to say we evolved to adapt to as many environments as possible means we are being in most places.

I too would like to not have to wear a coat outside but show me a species that is comfortable and can tolerate a 40 degree celcius swing in temps without being out of its comfort zone.

my cats and my neighbors dog, for starters. ;)

their coats thicken in the winter and thin in the spring.

Not the point but if your talking anually then grow your hair long, in winter wear it down round your body and in summer wear it up above your head, hey presto we can now do what your describing.

Strange how many smart people are bald, I think it is a byproduct of hormonal shifts due to sedentary activities like reading etc.

the hair on your head will not protect you from freezing overnight temperatures.

it is the point actually. animals are less evolved yet they need not RELY on clothing. most humans would not survive outside in their typical environment, without some type of clothing.

a fur covered dog can walk thru the desert all day and survive the freezing overnight temps. his owner would die without protection from the sun and the night freeze. can anyone tell me why? and i really don't believe it is because we are "more evolved". that makes no sense.

more power to the brain.

that makes more sense then any other answer so far.

except the "style" answer, of course. ;)

well the evolution theory says that we all originated in Africa, or that region at the time of early life so i assume it would be unnecessary for fur in that region. The people that ended up in the north are the ones who required warmth. i don't think we were meant to be living in cold places.

The thermal properties of his fur allow this to happen and by regulating the blood flow to the surface of the skin, that bits easy.
