it'll work...

if you use cmp fans to cool that thing, use one like this:

SILVERSTONE FM121 120mm Case Fan - Retail

  • Bearing Type: 2 Ball
  • RPM: 800 - 2400 RPM
  • Air Flow: Max 110.03 CFM
  • Noise Level: 17-39.5 dBA
  • Power Connector: 3 / 4 Pin
  • Color: White Fan, Silver Panel
  • Compatibility: Case
  • Dimensions: 120 x 120 x 25mm
  • Model #: FM121
  • Item #: N82E16811999344
  • Return Policy: Standard Return Policy

as you can see it's 100 CFM's, and is very quiet for it's power. a little on the expensive side at 17 bucks, but summer's coming round the corner, and those bulbs get hot....

if you are using a 400 watt hps i think you are going to need something better than a computer fan lol

the computer fan i put up gets more CFM's than most bathroom extractor fans, and i've seen those used on 400w lights....

there is more to a fans power than the cfm rating. CFM ratings are in -0- resistance circumstances. Static pressure will greatly reduce the actual cfms of the fan. Computerfans are notoriusly crppy at handling static pressure. I agree for an HPS in a cab you will need a bit more power.

Also don't ever use intake fans. I feel like a broken record around here, but intake fans unless they are perfectly tuned to the exhaust fan will do more harm than good. Most likely it will blow air out of your box through any tiny holes and it will defeat your carbon filter. Intake fans are only for exhausting lights. Push into the lights and pull out of the cabinet.

And yes you should use a sealed hood and vent that sucker but I doubt a pc fan would be enough for that. Couple of 4" duct fans would probably do the trick though. those are around $25 at home depot and even though their rated cfms are less than many pc fans, they do a lot better handling static pressure.

Good Luck with your grow!

Thanks for the replies guys.

10JED- you think I should just go with passive intakes Im guessing? If that will work, thats what I will do

I am honestly thinking im going to grab a cool tube in the next 2 weeks and attach it like this(= means ducting) wall=light=4-6"duct fan=wall. I heard cool tubes do real well. I just wish they werent $100. Would one duct fan be enough for the cool tube?

Im still going to have the regular exhaust and passives obviously.

Yeah that sounds right. you want to push through your light and pull through your carbon filter. Use passive intake for the room. Look around for DIY cooltubes. You can make them out of pyrex baking gizmos or hurricane lamp globes or even cut the bottom off a tubular vase with acetone and string.

Im going to have 2 comp fans at the top for exhaust and 2 more down on the side for intake..
If heat is not an issue in the room your going to use the cabinet in. Then just a light duty exhaust fan & two dark room vents for passive intake. It works for me !!

Keep an eye on this company. I purchased mine for $39 shipped. I just noticed today they were selling for $59 shipped. Bastards raised their prices

Here is a link to dark room vents for passive intake.

Then get yourself a small 6" clip on fan & have it blowing between the top of your plant & hps bulb towards the exhaust fan.

Whatever you plan on doing, just remember with a very basic low budget grow box with a 400 watter you are going to want to keep the light 12" away from top of plant to avoid burning it. No matter what you do, you're going to need to move the air around so it doesn't get hot in there. Computer fans wont really do the job with an hps set up. Maybe cfl's

Ive come to realize that comp fans are a shitty ass idea.

Im going to buy a 6" inline fan most likely. Post #10 shows exactly what im thinking about doing..

im just gonna have to save up some money for a little.
