Woodworking and grow rooms

Hello all Jim Jim here. Just wonderng what RIU knows about woodwork? I am building a grow room soon and I haven't done any woodwork in the past 6 years.

Firstly, How does one build a frame that will be strong enough for a grow room and to support grow lights and filters etc. that isn't attached to the roof or floor of your house? So what I mean is I am renting a house so I can not make any physical changes too the house itself but would like to build a mini room within my room about 2000mm by 1500mm. Would I have to add supports to each corner like little corner triangle support feet?

Secondly, How do I join the corners of the frame as in each qall to each other, it seems every website I go to had a different opinion. Some use just a solid pole that they nail there walls too, others use a metal hinge.

Lastly, How would I go about making a cieling or roof or top etc. that would be able to support the weight of lights, filters, fans, ducting etc.

Cheers a lot guys, This thread or a thread similar could use a nice stickying too teach people.

lots of 2x4's, drywall screws, some sort of white plastic, and a staple gun...2x4's are plenty strong enough to support lights, the are not that heavy :)

I don't need dry walls, I am just going to do frame and panda film I guess but I just have my doubts about my ability to build a sturdy grow room at the moment.

2x2's are light and sturdy enough to give ya a strong little grow box.

Do ya have a home depot and how much $ you wanna spend?

i said drywall screws...not drywall boards...its what you screw the 2x4's together with...just get some 2" drywall screws and have at it...build a frame up that sits on the floor then lay down a plastic barrier on the floor to prevent any water/moisture from getting on it to protect it. then cover your walls in the panda film...all you'll need to do is create joists in the ceiling area to hang your equipment from...just get a good drill, #2 bits and a chopsaw...you wont need to cut any weird angles, they will all be straight cuts :)

ok so what i done for my first ever grow was built a frame out of 2x2's then screwed it into the skirting board this was a small grow room id say over a meter wide and 2 foot deep it was small but very sturdy and worked a treat but obviously after it was done i smashed it up and had to cover the holes in the skirting board id personally suggest buying a cheap tent if ur from the uk greenhorticulture do wicked deals i allways go crazy there lol and with tents theres no mess to clean up or holes to fill and they last a good while and there good for airfiltration id say just buy one the time money and effort of building a box is alot

I live in Australia we don't have hom depots lol. We have just hardware stores I guess and money isn't too big of a problem too me. I guess I probably don't want to go over $750 on the room itself so that's the timber, screws, panda film, Drill, saw and any other tools I may need to build the room.

Well I live in Australia so not too many places too buy tents but even then all tents I have seen look really flimsy. I need one that is 1.8m by 1.4m at least and to be able to support 2 lights, 2 ballasts (up high as well not on the ground), 2 oscilating fans and a carbon filter with ducting and exhaust fan. The frame on all the tents doesn't look like it could support that. cheers anyway

Do you live in Adelaide Australia and enjoy free labour? Just joking but honestly I want to challenge myself and do this because I was the only one who got an A+ back in high school when we did woodwork now I don't know shit lol

oh trust me they can support alot of weight i have an air cooled light 600w with an osilating fan hanging and also my spare 300w red cfl with yoyo's and reflector . acoustic ducting and i keep ballasts outside of tents or grow rooms silly to keep them inside just dealing with more heat than needed :S anyways i use a 1.2 by 2 meter tent and it handels all of this stuff very well oh and i also have 3 strips of fluros on top of the tent with a load of boxes the tent could take twice as much as this and it would be fine i reckon dont go buying the cheapest one out there tho lol

if i did i'd be completely down for helping you out man, but i'm on the opposite side of the globe :D

This will give you a good idea of how easy it is to build a frame...about the 14-15 mark you can see whats going on:

Bunnings mate, you can build the frame cheap from them. I`m in the middle of building a room in my garage and all the wood cost me was like $40 and screws probably another $20 and this room is 5ft wide by 14ft long and 7or8ft high. I cant remember the height exactly.
Go to bunning and price the wood and screws and what ever tools you need. You`ll be suprised how cheap you can do it for.

Is a grow tent out of the question?

Or you could make your own out of PVC, fittings and mylar. Probably easier and cheaper than wood.

I've never done this, but looking at how I setup my Secret Jardin it looks like thats an easy way to do it as thats how the frame is(metal tubing instead of PVC though)

If you're renting this is probably the best idea since it sounds like it could be taken down way easier than a wood framed room within a room. Sounds like an awful time taking it apart.
