World Of Hempy

In 2 litre Hempy bottles (100% perlite) at what point will the roots hit the res? Will it be obvious?
The most advanced of my seedlings are just putting out the 3rd set of true leaves and stand maybe 3 inches above the substrate. They seem to be taking off, so I wonder could the roots be at the res at this stage?
Now they have a few leaves they're actually getting some use if the light at last too!

On most of my 2L's I havent painted or covered the bottom res section of the bottle. This allows me to see when the roots hit the res. light doesnt enter because the 2L's sit in a holding tub with a lid on. ..........however if the res is painted on a 2l it should still be obvious when the res is reached, they'll be a spurt of growth.

Some of the clones I put in this time around only had between an inch or 2 of roots before they went into the 2L .... they still managed to hit the res in a week and they're doing great.

It sounds like yours have hit the res .... Goodluck.

I think your taproot is in. If you turned your plant upside down (mentally, of course) that's a fair representation of where your root mass will be to include branching. - It's still a bit of a guess, but It'll give you an idea.

Well I think they may be getting somewhere near then, if not there already.
I just made a drain table so I can water more carelessly and collect the runoff in a pan underneath.
The perlite was starting to turn a bit green and algea covered, which isn't good, so each bottle now has a little square of polythene to shield it from the light. Hopefully no ill effects.

Imo, the roots will hit the rez inside of 5 days from transplant/in a 2L. It helps to not keep them to wet during this time to make them search for water/nutes, just enough to keep the medium moist. I personally run seedlings in cups for 10-14 days before transplant into a 2L. I feel this gives them a nice upper root mass to anchor the rest of the plant especially if you have a heavy yielding strain/pheno. They can get pretty floppy in a 2L at times lol.

Have not given an update in a while so thought I would get it done.

The young-un's have seemed to recover from the pH issue I suffered this past weekend. The new growth is very healthy looking. Today was the first true feeding they have received since last Friday's feeding, they were flushed heavily and have received only pH'ed water since the problem was discovered.
Here is a few pic's with headings.

I believe this is the damage from the pH problem, if I am incorrect please reply.

The group, the two on the left suffered the most from the pH issue.


They seem to have come out of the problem and are beginning to resume growth.

Prior to feeding I collected the liquid from the rez of each plant and checked the pH, it was 5.85, went in with 5.98.
Caught the rinsate from todays feeding and it was 5.95, went in with 5.98 pH'ed nutes. I have been using 3ml/gal of Cal/Mag but I increase that to 5ml/gal for a bit. Will see how things go.

Well I believe the pH problem is resolved.

Here is BW1 today, two days later. You think I have reached the rez?

I am still seeing some issue with the pH, so I will continue to add additional Cal/Mag, Prior to installing the coir cover layer my pH going in was 5.9 to 6.0 and the rinsate was 5.85 to 5.9. After the installation of the coir layer pH going in was the same but coming out was very low, high 4's to low 5's. After doing a heavy flush using pH'ed water with 10 ml of Cal/Mag/gallon then watering with nutes the pH was 6.0 going in and the rinsate was 5.6. Today I am removing the existing coir layer and replace it with a heavily CAl/Mag infused coil layer. Hopefully this will solve any issues.
Any thoughts or suggestions accepted.

TWS, I agree with gr8branch, those are some lovely very well manicured buds. Congratulations!
I don't attempt to do that good a job, hell this is for me only so having a little extra leaf on the bud is cool with me. That being said when I prep my bowl with bud I usually remove any extra leaf to get the full taste of the bud.

Ok folks, Not sure what to do here.
I have been watering/feeding with 6.1 to 6.3 solution, the rinsate coming from the drain hole has consistently been in the high 4's to the low 5's.
Yesterday I removed the coir cap i had on the buckets an added a layer of mix to cover any roots that I may have exposed. I watered with straight 6.25 pH'ed rainwater with 5 ml Cal/Mag/gal. The rinsate was 5.3.
Here is what I am thinking of doing. Right now I have a mylar cover on the buckets but am thinking of removing the mylar and replacing it with a 2" layer of organic vegan compost. I need a cap of some sort to keep the algae from forming on the Perlite at the surface of the buckets.
So, I would love some help here peeps!

I have a cover over my perlite, but I'm finding it a hassle to water now. I think it will come off in favor of a soil cap.


When can I switch these weeny weeds to 12/12? Still I bit early I recon! Another week? 2?

They're in 2 litre bottles and I'm keen to get flowering and finishing asap really.

I have never really worried about my green-speckled perlite. I till the soil here and there with a fork just to disrupt things. After my plant gets a certain size, there isn't much light shed down there anyway, and it goes away, but I am not running massive wattage. If it bothers you that much, you could get the matching lids for your Lowes (I think) buckets, cut a hole in the middle of them for your main stem, then slit from the edge to the hole opening. It would work like one of those plastic DWC, net pot covers. The slit allows you to remove it at watering time if you don't find it to be too big a pain in the ass. You're going to worry yourself sick over measuring your drainage! I think if you watch what goes in as closely as you are, you really won't have to worry about it.

Growan - the same thing will work for you if you keep the uppers for your bottles, cut off the spout, and slit. Wrap em in duct tape. There may be some mystery lid that fits from a coffee can or something. I forget that you guys are running straight perlite and watering every day. Won't neem oil sprayed there clear it up after a day or so?

And I'M finally flipping today! Nanny, nanny, boo, boo! (Sorry Growan and GR - I know you guys are anxious) I was waiting out a deficiency from my transplant.

I should be in week 4 of 12/12 from my last grow, vegged and trained for 5 weeks and flipped on 12/15. Put the bastard in the compost pile on Christmas.
One Afghan regular seed, 50/50 chance, just was not my roll.
Trained to 16 cola!

I think they are lost after many system changes on RIU. Moe is around, and may be able to point you to some later references. The meat is still there.
