Your logic is dizzying

Nobody is arguing this point?????

Have you read these threads?? They are chalk full of gun owners who are 100% opposed to any type of legislation. We have people posting here that feel that there should be no background checks, no gun registration, no limits on what types of guns and ammo you should be able to own (in case the US military turns on it's citizens), and that stashing weapons OUTSIDE of your house, not locked up, is a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

You have to be kidding.

How many gun laws do we already have in the US. Were all of these laws enacted specifically because they were anti-common-sense?

Connecticut has an "assault weapons" law. Did it prevent Lanza from murdering children?

When you and Buck and Obama say, "we just need some common sense gun laws", what exactly do you mean?

When you look at "common sense gun laws" what you see is gun bans ala New York city, Chicago, and Washington, DC. Rational people look at those enclave of "common sense" and are forced to conclude that all those "common sense" gun laws have achieved the exact opposite of what they claim, they have become bastions of murder and government oppression.

Here is a "common sense" gun law proposal: allow citizens to be armed if they choose to be armed, just like the second amendment guarantees. There are way more sane, safe people in society than crazed, murderous people. Let's stack the deck in favor of sane, safe people.

Let's face it though, the hoplophobes don't really give one shit about "common sense".

There is that lazy phrase again "common sense" - which means the wielder of this "common sense" need not look into facts or apply reason or trouble themselves at all, they need only apply their "common sense" - it's the American way, substitute our Gut instinct for logic and reason.

I don't consider a ban on guns (like you referenced) to be a common sense idea.

Having to register all guns=common sense

Having to go through a background check= common sense

Having to complete a gun safety and shooting class (with yearly or longer re certification)=common sense

Making penalties MUCH stiffer (mandatory prison time) for people caught with an illegal firearm=common sense

Establishing some kind of standard for gun storage= common sense

Everything listed above is easily achievable, and ensures that "the good guys" can keep their guns, and that "the bad guys", if caught, will see stiffer penalties for their transgressions. I understand that some things are unavoidable, and as a society we will never completely rid ourselves of every act of violence ..... but if one of the above stops even *one* Sandy Hook incident from happening, then wouldn't the minor inconvenience it causes you make it all worth while?

So you want to again punish/force extra taxation on the legal owners and then the people who don't give a fuck can just keep not giving a fuck?

Does common sense have a different definition over the US?

Obama, Unclebuck, et al are the ones trotting out that phrase. Take it up with them.

What is so sensible about national registration of firearms? What is the purpose of national registration?

Mandated yearly gun safety classes: How much do they cost? How long do they last? Chicago has an ordinance that requires training. Chicago banned gun ranges, hence the training is impossible to obtain. A gun ban by any other name is a gun ban. Gun owners don't trust all of you "common sense" folks for a reason.

Punish? No. Force? Yes.

It's a minor inconvenience, imo. Do I like going to get my drivers license renewed? No I don't, but I would rather have a system in place that insures that there isn't some half blind grandma driving around on the roads.

If I had my way, I would empty the prisons of all non-violent drug offenders, and fill them right back up with every little gang-banger running around with an illegal gun. I'm all for being punitive towards the "bad guys", but there has to be a system in place to identify them first.

Guns owners being inconvenienced is a piss poor excuse for inaction, imo.

You guys don't trust anyone. Just stay hunkered down in your doomsday shelter ...... that's a great way to live.

Tough shit. Amend the constitution, then we can talk.

Let me see if I have this down. The gun toters claim that more guns will make things better and they are the same folks who claim that more gun LAWS will not.

The left claims that more gun laws will make things better and that more GUNs will not. Rather symmetrical it seems. Both are invariably wrong unless of course the laws pertain not to the individuals but to the gun manufacturers.

Treating gun owners like sex offenders is definitely not common sense. The 2nd protects my right to own a gun, why do you think you have a right to know what I own?

Idiocy like the paper in NY pulled by printing names and addresses of legal gun owners is a bitch move by the anti-gun "common-sensers". This move isn't possible without gun registration. How many criminals register their guns? So a list is published of law abiding citizens, brilliant.

The really sad thing about the anti-gun movement's "common sense" is Gannett feels printing the names and addresses and a map to their house of prison gaurds and retired cops (the kind of people who followed the law and registered their guns) was such a great thing they are going to do it again. The sense used by the anti-gunners is anything but common.

It's virtually impossible to get anything legally here except a shotgun or single shot bolt gun (no bigger than a .303 I believe) and only if you've land over 3 acres to shoot on.

Handguns are TOTALLY banned with the exception of law enforcement and for recognised sports in registered clubs (eg an Olympic shooting club) yet most shootings here are carried out by handguns (and the occasional Mac11 or AK47, which are also TOTALLY beyond illegal, mandatory 5 years sort of illegal, yet still used).

We've done it, most of the modern world has, yet it's not working.

Having to register all guns=common sense *Disagree, gun registry's are a waste of time. Who 'owns' a gun is useless. Police should assume everyone is armed. A registry for automatic weapons is a good idea.

Having to go through a background check= common sense *Agree

Having to complete a gun safety and shooting class (with yearly or longer re certification)=common sense *Yearly testing for CCW and extensive training, very basic course for non-CCW firearms owners

Making penalties MUCH stiffer (mandatory prison time) for people caught with an illegal firearm=common sense *Holy shit yes

Establishing some kind of standard for gun storage= common sense *Agree

A constitutional amendment may be what ends up happening.

I would venture a guess that if that list of proposals were put before the American public, the majority would vote in favor of it.

First of all I don't agree with publishing the names of gun owners, so quit trying to lump every "common sense" person together.

Second, EVERY criminal was at one point a law abiding citizen. You guys act as if people are born with a scarlet letter on their forehead for all to see.

You can't mandate it either. So I recognize every single invocation of "common sense" sharing a clause with the word "gun" as being rooted in some sort of restrictive impulse. cn
Public disarmament is one of the primary objectives of an authoritarian state. It's no wonder the left advocate for it so vigorously.

1 gun death per year per 100,000 in Ireland.

10 gun deaths per year per 100,000 in the United States.

You may not feel it's not working where you live, but by comparison it's a smashing success.
