I'm not sure what exact purpose the lumens have on the plant. I do know that you want to have a certain amount of lumens per square foot to grow a plant properly. A regular Hps 400 puts out 50,000 lumens. An enhanced spectrum grow bulb like the hortilux, or solarmax, puts out 55,000 lumens.

I bought a DYI kit and put together my 400w hps. Costed me $125 totall for everything including junction box. Not really that hard to put together. Then I bought a 6" cool tube. Total cost of 400w system w/ cool tube = $225 Hell of a lot cheaper than buying at hydro store or ordering on line.
