DIY Samsung LM561C build

These were custom designed and fabricated, you won't find them on Alibaba. Minimum order amounts are in the hundreds, I'm trying to get a sense of interest here and then go back to the manufacturer to get volume discounts. But early indications are that in sufficient quantity pricing will be sub-$20 per strip. For those interested I've started a SolStrip thread HERE, please use it or DMs for pre-order questions, I don't want this thread to get derailed.

I have the Estonian strips and like them, I used them to model the SolStrip design. The SolStrips are 2x as powerful and about 15% more efficient.

I am sorting out the voltage bins with the manufacturer, who seems genuinely bewildered by my fixation on chip generations, efficacy, bin lots, and color rendering indices....
Move on trolling on another's thread is not very respectful but that is one way to sell like gg crew just run over others you look bad not me

VegasWiner not going to get into it with you but will respectfully remind you that the topic of this thread is "DIY Samsung LM561C build", it was started by @Oneshark, and you showed up at post #41.

SolStrips are LM561 chip strips made for DIY builds, you aren't Oneshark and this isn't "your" thread. So who's the troll?

Those interested in furthering the discussion of rigid mid-power LED strips designed for horticultural DIY builds are welcome to join us on the SolStrip thread HERE. Namaste.

Listen I'm all for group buys, we could really save some money without having to deal with endless sales pitches from people like @CobKits (sorry, but you are just replacing what would be group buys on any other forum), but I think the way this shitty forum is setup group buys are against the rules. Only paid advertisers are allowed to do what you want to do.

It's really a shame because there are deep, deep discounts for everything we buy, but instead we are at the mercy of the DIY shops set up around this one fucking subforum because they pay to hock their shit. It's a bit ridiculous, kind of like @Big smo and his Autocob lights on another forum. Let's screw together some shit from Mechatronix, Meanwell, and Ideal/BJB and call it a light.

And @welight and whoever the fuck else. I guarantee @Growmau5 would have rather done group buys than slap his name on a kit to make some other dude money who just happened to have the capital to stock up on Chinese shit.

Now all three sellers I named are cool dudes who contribute a lot, but they shouldn't be necessary and are profiting off the illegality of it all. Meanwhile, in the US, 60% of the population lives in states where marijuana is legal.

I guess what I'm saying is, ask @rollitup or whoever the fuck if you can just do a group buy, and make a thread about it and stop beating around the bush.

Shooting cross-wise for sure. Dude my comment was intended as a defense of using Chinese suppliers, i.e. everybody does it (even Ford). One must be discerning and skeptical of unproven suppliers is all, as in all new business relationships - you as a risk-taking, successful retired businessman certainly know this. Must be some heavy paranoia-inducing sativa or something. "Namaste" indeed.

Since you missed the nuance, here it is straight up: Use any frigging real or fake chips you want in your personal hobbies. But if your plans are to resell them to folks here, get them tested or verified, or expect your would-be customers to be skeptical. Overcome the objection, Sales 101.

Swagat hai!

Since you like to be direct. Let me be direct right back. If you or one of your friends wanted to buy anything from me I would not sell it to you because I have morals and ethics. If I sell anything it is already tested and in the main stream use. You know little of me. But yet you say not so nice to me. I am used to it here now. I expect nasty all day long here.
regarding testing, I would use an independent laboratory, as I have stated earlier.

I was going to offer an apology for what I said, which I still offer, but your attitude sucks like many here. Why are you afraid of me an old engineer? I was doing sales before you were born. Door to door vacuum cleaner sales to pay my way thru college, and I never took advantage of anyone I was always fair. I know sales. you know little of me.
try relationships 101

I guarantee that you are full of shit. Speak for yourself and don't put (stupid) words in other people's mouths. Growmau5 has put his name on deals from several vendors that he respects and likes to support and promote. Cobkits puts a lot of time and effort into what he does for the community. He operates on paper-thin margins. Just try comparing his prices with those of the large online retailers... and do you think they will give you free design advice or even give 2 shits whether your project works and you get a good harvest? Absolutely fucking not.

I salute people like Cobkits, welight, robincnn, Rahz, greengenes, RainDan and others who have contributed more knowledge to this forum than you (or I) ever will. If they make a buck or two along the way, well they deserve it.

group buys are fine when you have one part that you are buying in bulk. i stock a wide variety of chip sizes and colors, and drivers, including things that arent profitable just to be able to offer one-stop shop to people. I take pride in that, because no two grows are really the same.

It's not just one part, it would make creating whole fixtures much cheaper...the heatsinks, the drivers, the cobs. @tomate's unfortunate outburst aside, it's not about what anybody has or hasn't contributed, and more about the fact that the only way to buy this shit is for somebody to become a vendor and sell it to us through the forum because of rules that do more harm than good.

It's not DIY when every other post is from a vendor. This whole place is one big incestuous mess, and I hope @Baudelaire manages to get permission for and organize a group buy of some sort. But it sounds like a useless dream to me...god forbid anybody shows real DIY spirit here, the admins will likely continue to shut it the fuck down because it makes them no money.

And @tomate if you search hard enough you will find @Growmau5 wishing he could do group buys here, since he's is a legitimately selfless contributor. The collaborations were a compromise.

I would just like to share my DIY fixture with you guys as a way of giving back to this community as I have been a long time lurker here.

View attachment 3948364

I'm currently on my first grow with my DIY cheap Chinese cob plus monos fixture. Planning to upgrade to 4*CLU048-1212 for my cab as I want it to be a cheap build. Then the Quantum Boards craze hit with results to back it up. But then it's always out of stock so I thought maybe I could do it myself.

(Also thank you to the HLG for bringing these diodes from the shadows, no one on their right mind would go from "high" power cobs down to these "mids", but you guys did all the hard work with your research proving that it's the bomb. So thank you!)

I was thinking if maybe I could source some Samsung LM561C diodes on a flexible LED strips the ones being used on mood lighting, maybe I could build one specifically for my cab. Then I searched and I did really found a supplier. Also saw The LED Gardeners blog and that's he's also going to DIY these QB's but with rigid led strips so that made me more excited for my upcoming project since it's really doable.

So my plan was to build a fixture with evenly spaced diodes compared to the QB's so that the light intensity would be spread out and that I could lower it further to the canopy. Then the Fluence SPYDRx form factor hit me. So that's what I built, a mini SPYDR measuring 21"x 28" for my 24"x30" cab.

I ordered 5 meters of 3000k and 5 meters of 3500k flexible LED strips with a Samsung LM561C 24V 80CRI S6 bin diodes. 60diodes/meter for a total of 600 diodes powered by 1 HLG-185-24A.
This strips has adhesive 3M tape at the back.

I bought 10 pieces of 0.5 meters in length of 1 inch square aluminum bar, glued and riveted them to a 4 inch wide aluminum C channel. Drilled some holes for the wiring, slapped two 0.5 meter strips for every bar and did hours of soldering.

Reason for the mixing of spectrum was that on the spec sheets of the LM561C, combining these two would be the nearest to the PhysioSpec spectrum of Fluence minus the deep reds which they do have a separate diodes for those. Also 24V strips over 12V to lower the amperage and that it's less prone to voltage drop. As these LED strips voltage' drops after 5 meters. So I wired mine on parallel every 2.5 meters.

Currently I'm running them on full for testing and the bars are warm to touch and that's it's really bright.

Total Cost:
1*3000k 5m strip - $25.95
1*3500k 5m strip - $25.95
1* HLG-185-24A - $39.00
DHL Shipping - $30.31
TOTAL: 121.21

Plus another more or less $20 for the frame and wires.

GRAND TOTAL: $140 for a mini SPYDR with 600 LM561c diodes for 185 watts.
Cool as shit. Littil bml. I like. U no antink about citizen LED. I no cobkits nos. I ask him an I no what he seed just like to find people that like citizenships that use them. Clu46 1212. My thoughts exactly! lol

Look, I only seek to offer the group another option for their DIY projects. I like all the vendors here and respect the LED pioneers that have blazed the trails of quality DIY COB and mid-power lighting design here at RIU. I've already been in touch with some of the vendors here, if one of them would like to offer these strips I'd be happy to let them. And as I've told the RIU crew I will happily advertise if I ever have a product to sell.

SolStrips are a project, not a product. If the RIU community wants to support it, vet it, suggest improvements and refine it, I can facilitate the manufacture and distribution of a small lot of the strips to the group. Right now, the fabricator wants a minimum order of 500 units. Like most of you, I don't need 500 units. So, if these strips are to ever see the light of anyone's grow space, some type of group transaction is required. If that's profiteering, ripping people off, or disrespecting the LED gurus, well I respectfully disagree.

I've got a day job, I don't need another "business". I've admired the embrace of innovation by the LED posters at RIU, and thought this might be a way I could contribute. But if its too threatening we can all just go back to our shitty Chinese flexi strips and commercial flouro retrofit strips.

I'll turn this back over to VegasWiner and "Mufue Technology" now.... :peace:

i dont think they are anti-DIY, rather the site is simply a business. if they dont protect advertisers interests, it is bad for their business. I think thats pretty much the long and short of it
Sure Bob, except I am on much, much bigger forums than this one who I'm sure make much more money. They have banners, contributing users who also buy advertising, but the only posts that advertise are limited to vendor sub-forums, DIY group buys are encouraged, and every other fucking post isn't from a "Rollitup Advertiser".

It's just more shady weed shit.

@Baudelaire just get permission and organize a group buy. Or stop whining. I think it's a great idea, but shit or get off the pot.

It's been made very clear to me by the site owners that there will be no group buys or any discussion on SolStrips without the purchase of advertising. The SolStrip thread was summarily deleted, as my account will likely be after this post. So there's your profiteering, VegasW.

If anyone is interested in participating in the development of a custom LED rigid strip specifically designed for our needs I've started a thread on more hospitable forum. Or you can contact me here. @CobKits appreciate the offer, I'll be in touch once I have some 80 CRI strips for you to test. Peace out.

Well, fuck this place in the asshole anyway. It's toxic, and most of the smart people have long been driven away by bro growers with large egos and small brains. This whole forum feels like it's stuck 5 years ago with it's features and policies. I honestly don't know how @CobKits continually eats shit with a smile from some of the more aggressive people around here, but eat it he does. Must be good money in it.

But seriously, fuck this place.

checked out the overgrow page.

this isnt true, btw. its the same technology, same efficiency is achievable with either. maybe you mean per chip but i could see where average reader would think that 1000W of strips produces less heat (or more light) than 1000W of cobs

Because the LEDS are only around 3 watts, are spread out across the PCB strip, and are highly efficient, they generate less heat than COBs,

hit me up when you wanna test. best of luck
