yes been there done that in mess we had to line up get you chow eat and be done in 10 minutes morning 7minutes to shit shower and shave before they try to pt you to death
PT might have not been this guys cup o tea.wonder why \while some people are in fact not viable candidates for the military, others are. If you're doing this on a whim or because you're at a dead end think reeeeal hard before you make a decision. On the other hand, if you "feel" the military lifestyle , if you wanna be a soldier for the sake of being a soldier, not for college $$$, go for it. Best decision i ever made. Wouldn't take back a minute of it from basic to combat. Not every Army mos is combat arms, plenty of admin an medical jobs etc depending on your asvab. 1 suggestion...if yo can't "pick" your mos based on your score, don't take a job you don't want. The"real" Army, not the one you join for a couple years for college $$$, is what I'm talking about. In fact if you're doing this for tuition i suggest against it. You get sent downrange in the sand a tuition will be the last thing on your mind.

The first duty of any and all military personel is as an infantryman. When needed you will be required to pick up a gun and fight.
Yep, and that's why you want to join the Navy. They don't give them guns. Get a job as a Nuke and you're set. You're an E5 in about a year and you don't have to fuck with the rest of the bullshit on the boat. No crappy jobs for Nukes like TAD to the mess hall.

Oh, and NEVER ADMIT TO ANY DRUG USE! EVER! They'll pull you in a room and try to coax you into admitting smoking a little pot and even say shit like, "It's cool if you did, pretty much everyone did. We just have to know for our records." Bullshit. It will stop you from getting a security clearance.

GIJane: Don't let anyone talk you out of anything you want to do, it's your life. I myself have no issues with military and would still be there if I didn't get hurt. Study for your asvab so that you can have a wide variety of jobs. PM me if you have any questions or anything.

Never been in the navy, but they have navy guys running river boats in Iraq and driving convoy, as I said, IEDs don't have a conscience, and as an E-1, E-2 you can be assured you are prime gun fodder. A sniper doesn't look for service preferances when he pulls the trigger. Anytime you go into a combat zone your life is in danger

Yeah, the first military recruiter I spoke with-Navy rep-actually outright asked me if I've ever used any illegal drugs. I said no, of course, and he fucking pressed the issue. "Never smoked any...never popped a..." I was like, "No, absolutely not, Sir."

I have so many questions. I just need to know if the Navy would be a better deal for me than the Army. I could really use that enlistment bonus to help me pay off my loans, and some aid for grad school.

Definently as a safety issue, the Navy is safer. I don't know their sign-up bonus difference. Seems with the increased danger the Army would offer a substantially larger sign-up bonus. Do yourself a favor. Go to a bar around a base and talk to the troops first, get it from the horses mouth. The recruiters are lying scumbags, all services.

So, what do they make you do in boot camp? what kind of exercises, and are your drill sgts up in your face shouting at you and making you do pushups and shit? Are there any weird military hazing rituals I should know about, or things to watch for on my first few days?

Yeah watch your ass. The yelling gets to be monotonous, no big deal. just keep your stuff straight and clean. The shinier your boots, the better they like it. Push ups, squats, jumping jacks, pull ups and lots of running/ marching with heavy packs. When I went in at Ft. Ord in N. Cal. they made us march up and down the sand dunes with a 65 lb pack on our back and carrying an M1 Garrand=9 lbs. I don't know what they do now, but I've heard the marines are worse. the Navy, I think you do a lot of marching and they make you swim, plus PT (Physical Training) We had to go on a 20 mile march as a finale to boot camp, with the 65 lb pack and the M1. Started out at 2AM and got back to the barracks at 5PM got 3 10 Minute breaks and lunch. Man I was tired after that one and I was in top shape.

the Navy recruiter told me you only have to pass boot camp with a class 3 swimer grade...he said you just need to be able to float, tread water, and swim halfway across the pool. i could also possibly get a waiver to join the Air Force-recruiter said I'd have to write a "sorry letter" about it and get court records that everything's been paid for and penalties taken care of.

I can honestly say that joining the Air Force was the smartest thing I ever did. I got great electronics job skillz (after 3.5 years active my first civillian job paid 65K...in 2000) and got to travel quite a bit. My worst accomodation was a shared dorm room with 1 other person and I told them I was a vegetarian for religious reasons so I got cash for food instead of being made ot eat at the chow hall. When I went back to school GI bill gave me 1k a month tax free and my new civillian job paid for school so I pocketed the gi bill. Just be prepared to deal with some margin of bullshit and sign up for no more than 4 years. Also, don't fuck around with drugs because they will catch you and they will make an example out of you. Word.

This whole thing sounds like you want to do the bare minimum military service just to get the cash. What happens if you're given a gun and told to kill? Are you convinced that the search for caveman is a valid effort to expand freedom and spread mobocracy. Do you think we should be doing that? Do you think we actually are doing that? What are the consequences of an empire that flexes its military muscle (you) against anyone that has oil and won't take a US controlled central banking system? That answer can be found again and again throughout history. Im typing alot on your thread when its really none of my business, and if you never asked I wouldnt give a fuck, but you asked. I just hope you read more about the motives behind this war, and past wars, investigate 911, read all about the military industrial complex and profiteers like the Bush Family and Haliburton, Cheney's fund, and the US constitution before you make a move. I don't mean to be down on the military, I just think people need more information than what they are typically given. You have to seek out information to find the truth, or at least tell when something ISNT true.

You still have an 8 year obligation, no matter what you sign up for. You'll be in the ready reserves after your 4 years. In other words if they need you they'll call you up.
I'm sticking with my opinion that this is a bad time to join the military. If John McCain gets elected, we're sure to have lots more war.

how long after your service did you go to school? And how much did you make while in active service? do you get paid more in the air force than the navy or the army? which branch pays the most?

I went to military electronics training right after basic training. Look up military pay scale to see what you will make. It's not squat as a jr enlisted person. The key is to leverage your time into better opportunity when you get out after 4 years. Previous post was right that you will be IRR for a total of 8 years but the air force hasnt tapped anyone who is no longer active unlike the marines & army. They all pay the same. If you join be sure to get a GUARANTEED JOB (AFSC, MOS, whatever). Your options will be based on your ASVAB scores. If you don't get a guaranteed job they will pick one for you :) Oh, I was like the last dude they would ever rely on to save us so if they gave me a gun it meant we would all be fucked...but theoretically it is possible.

that's fucking hilarious. yeah, i think the main motivation here for me would be training/certification in the field I majored in in college, and the pay for training and reserve service on the weekends and my 2 weeks/year. Sounds like I should just stick to what I know and gain the professional experience from it. I really hope the recruiters haven't been lying to me about tuition assistance and aid for outstanding debt. I need to get stuff like that in writing ASAP.

As far as picking jobs they will train you up from zero to full speed in usually less than a year and you can pick from whatever options are open to you. Guard/Reserve is a bit different in that you can pick a job that is specifically required at the guard/reserve unit you will be with...as long as you have a qualifying ASVAB score. I have had several jobs in the military and got tons of training that they paid me to take. Most recently in aeromedical evacuation. When I finish graduate school I will go back with a big promotion and get some big money cash bonuses too. I don't beleive in war for oil but I do think a citizen has some obligation to your country DESPITE some of the fucked up laws aka marijuana prohibition. When it's all said and done this is still one of the finest places to live in the world (or the history of the world for that matter).

come on, somebody give me some lowdown on what it's really like to be in the military? Do they really give you all the money and tuition assistance they promise? I know it depends on the work you do in the reserves, but...please advice
I recently retired from Army. I can tell u with lots of experience that basic training today is not bad at all. The stories i hear from the newbys just returning from boot is pitiful (pussified) compared to my experience at boot years back. And yes the benifits are great to sum it all up if you join u will be taken care of the rest of your life, you may not always have everything you want but you will never have to worry about having everything you need. If i had it to do over I would have went Air though.

If thats your way of thinking then anytime for is a bad time for you. The best time to join is when your country needs you most.
