Haha, i liked that.

Life has been distracting me recently, keeping me all to itself. But i have breathing room now, and update time is near. When the lights turn on i will be there with a camera, okay the lights turn on at six, and i will be asleep, but shortly after.

The plants are past the 5 week mark, and the swell has started. They are not filling in as much as i hoped, at current they are extremely dense. I imagine i cold have let them stretch just a little more before flipping or pinching/ super cropping like i did. A touch more height would have been nice there. They are frosting all over and the smell is very good. It's a mango,fruity smell, a pheno i have not encountered from my past a k48 batch, but those last batch also didn't treat me so well.

Now i have a good feel for the light, and the confined space, i am even considering taking a late lower branch clone to keep this blood line around, only for consistency purposes really, i plan on dedicating this cabinet and light to a very neat experiment.

For a small look into what my next grow will be, here is a brief teaser. I will be using either this ak for a clone, though i hate cloning a budded plant, they just never seem to grow well for me. Or perhaps i will clone the jock horror i have going, i also have one aurora indic a that I'm decently into now. Anyways the key here is consistency, i need one full grow to have a baseline against.


Anyway once i have a plant selected, it will be grown again in roots organic soil since it's been so simple and i have a lot of semi organic nutrients left. The cabinet will be fitted with just the spectra light and two banks of 730+ nm far red light totaling about 15w if that. When using the far red spectrum you don't need to worry so much about penetration since chlorophyll doesn't block 730+ spectrum. The spectra will come on for 10 hours, then the IR bank of leds will turn on for 15min or so, then off, then on again for 15again or so. With the rest of the 2 hours (1.5 or so) being uninterrupted dark. The goal is a 10 hour day with a 2 hour night, ideally resulting in 2 day cycles for every one of ours without sacrificing too much light. I could also go with a 11/1 but i need to stick with a 24 hour total since i will be using basic digital timers. I do think the 2 hour dark total will be conducive to a successful experiment as it will give the plant time to recognize the pfr built up by the 730 saturation. Anyway, enough ranting for now. Thats the experiment, and it's pretty exciting to me.

If you want to do a little research on the subject, look up photo chrome manipulation, specifically it's influence by far red and the conversion of pfr and pf. It's very interesting and I'm really only scratching the surface.

I might give reverting a shot, I was going to with a last batch, but ended up just scrapping them and making hash out of the leftovers.

Im leaning towards going with the jock horror, it's a nice plant to grow and the stretch isn't too huge. I will be flowering early with this experiment anyway since its not about yield at this point, rather proof of concept. In theory you should be able to flower in half the time, but people smarter than me with this stuff say your more likely to just shave a few weeks off, not halve it.

One big hurdle is finding LEDs that are 730nm that don't dip below into the visible red which then negates the ir side of things entirely and causes the plant to just continue to veg and worse yet it causes large stretch as during the dark time it's receiving very inadequate light.

Hoping for a few zips, but dont think i will improve my g/w on this one.

we'll see! they have a few more weeks to go (though they look to be an early finisher), might pack on some weight still :)

Not sure how the smaller side buds look, i havent even checked haha

I have noticed that there were fewer pistils this round than usual. I'm going to do a bit of research to see if that's due to lower temps, nutrient choice, or the led light even.

Also sorry for the crappy macro shots, i really didn't have the time to play with settings to get some decent photos. It took me 15 minutes to clean off a load of Ginger ale from the camera, don't ask haha

Look forward to seeing your results. I did a bunch of research on them about a year ago when I bought them but now I can't remember any of the links. If you have any good resources of information on the subject you can point me to, I'd love to read them and brush up on my research again. Thanks.

Yes i believe as full of a spectrum as possible is beneficial, though as many of you know these LEDs, which are missing a fair bit of ranges, seem to grow just fine.

On your 730 LEDs, when they are on, can you see any visible light? If its true 730 it should be infra red and have no light visible, almost any of the wrong light converts to pr almost instantly, or rather it would prevent the accumulation of pfr.

I don't have any of the information on this computer, but i do have some pretty good links, including one guys thesis on the same subject (different plant).

Ah and for anyone wondering, the diy co2 is very easy to maintain. About once a week i remove half the water and fill it again with warm water and about half a cup of sugar. I usually start a small glass of water/sugar/pinch of yeast on its own to get it activated, then add that too.

If broken down into dollars, i would say it's under $1 a week to maintain, and i should be producing enough co2 for a space over double this size. It would be smoother and longer lasting if i went with a proper brewing yeast, but i simply went with a grocery store yeast, which I'm sure is carbolizing the sugar much faster than needed.
 
I've been thinking about making DIY Co2 unit too using yeast and sugar, and then feeding airline tube right up next to my oscilatting fan blowing over my canopy...but recent research tells me it's not enough Co2 to be worth it. Not sure though.

How big is your space? i will try to find the site i used for the info, it has the formula for the math.

Haha thanks man!

In a few weeks ill be chopping her down. Thats where the numbers will tell us how i did. I think the light could do a bit better, just by how big the ancillary branches are, which was my fault ofc. I also believe more fine tuned nutes and constant co2 with the climate for it could have been better, but in all, i dont think i could get a whole lot more out of this light setup.

I keep needing to grab my watt meter and actually measure the power draw, i still dont know for certain (though others say around 180w),

Hey karr, there is no visible light coming from my spotlights. Not even in the dark. Hook it up with those links if you get a chance. I do remember watching a video of ed rosenthal talking about showering the entire plants with IR right before the lights go off, but can't find the link anywhere.

I think in a well ventilated cabinet your ventilation is going to remove the co2 before it's going to do much good due to air exchange. Lovely plant -- how long did you veg before you want into flower? From seed or clone -- sorry if answered already

For sure, if your cabinet has good air circulation any co2 added will likely pass through like said. I altered my cabinet so that the lower area where the plant is does not pass through too quickly. As co2 is heavy, this keeps the plant mostly covered.

I vegged the plant for something like a month before flipping, probably more like 6 weeks. But the main reason for this length is because the plant was under poor conditions for much of it's young life. No nutes, small coco filled pot, then finally once in proper dirt I burned it a bit due to my inexperience with organic soil and more so did some stunting with a ph meter that finally died.

The plant was from seed, mostly to get rid of my ak48 stock, since I'm really not too fond of this strain. It's somewhat picky to grow, doesn't smell great, taste is not my favorite, and yield is just average I'd say.
